Paint my calipers

So I bought some OEM 4-pot front calipers for my MY00 BRP RS. I'm keeping the 16's so I couldn't go w/ much else(except iON's new kit, but I missed it). ANYway, I got them a bit used and the paint is a bit worn. Am going to re-paint them and I thought I'd get your advice. I'm not the "Hey, look at my brakes!" kind of guy... if I were, I'd get some bigger rims. I got them for some improved heat capacity and modulation at the track. I do appreciate the asthetics of a nice setup, tho.
Anyway, since I'm going to be repainting them, I have a few options. First, is the most obvious, is to go red such as the 22b. I think this may be a bit much for my tastes. Second on the list is go back to close to what they were originally. Namely a flat black. This is nice and clean and was what I really planned to do. Then I happened upon the "cast aluminum" color by VHT. Looks to be a silvery finish. I thought this might be cool. ...with black lettering. What do you people think?

Let me know how you paint the SUBARU letters.I recently painted a set of STI calipers black, using dupli-color 1200 degree paint.
Came out really nice. Then I tried to paint the raised letters silver with a foam roller and made a mess.
So I just decided to keep them all black.

my plan is just paint the whole thing, then use some aluminum tape(because it stretches some, but tears easily, holds its shape and is very sticky, but no so that it will pull the other paint off) to cover everything up(including the letters) Then carefully, cut out the letters and peal them away. Then I can paint the whole thing. OR my other option is to do the opposite of that and paint it silver, cover it w/ tape, and cut out the letters and remove the outer part and paint the whole thing black. I'll have to see how the tape wants to work for me. If all that fails, I can do it w/ a small brush.

I have used the VHT paint with good success. Dont forget to bake it on before applying the second color(or keep them seperate.)
VHT makes several colors of caliper specific paints, they are all gloss except black which is also avilable in satin:

Why not just put a logo on the caliper?

These guys are just putting regular 'stickers' on their calipers and then clearcoating. Not bad?

There's already raised lettering on the calipers... putting stickers on wouldn't really work...

| mrbell | 02-19-2003 06:24 PM |

heh, I'm just givin' you a hard time... I am going to use the VHT, which doesn't come in gold, I don't think. They have yellow.

There is a better paint out there than that "spray on" stuff. It is much much thicker and is paint on. Looks great, but it runs around 40 bucks.

I got your GOLD right here. Expensive. But everyone I've heard of that uses it says how easy it is to apply and how rugged it is. Worth the price?

The way to do the letters a different color is you paint the cliper the color you want the letters first then paint the caliper the color you want it after it has fully dried take a piece of sand paper on a flack block and sand through the paint on the caliper to the first paint color. It might take a couple of tries but if done right the first time you will get great results. I recomend using like a 400 grit to get trought the paint and then a 600 grit wet sanding to a 1000 grit wetsanding and then some car polish to make them shine again. But make sure you put the paint on thick for both layers and its better to use a high temp primer first also. I have used the Brake caliper paint they sell at pepboys and it works great. I paitned my 4 pots red and paln to sand the paint to the metel so that the aluminum will shine through on the letters.

Gold=Bling Bling factor in a huge way if not pulled off correctly. Why not Japanese Cherry Red...IIRC that is the official name of "STi Pink" although I have never seen a pink cherry!
Prior to painting the best anser would be to sand blast them, then lay down a nice coat of primer...wait till cured then hit them with your actual paint colour.
Good Luck

I painted them today... "satin black" w/ "cast aluminum" letters. The look nice. I took a different approach to painting the letters. Painted the caliper black, masked off the whole thing except the letter box. Melted some wax into the recesses, cleaned off the raised parts, and painted. Little bit messy, but it worked alright. After the wax was dry, I chipped out what easily came out, then I went and did some hard braking for about 20 minutes. The rest of the wax melted away. It's not perfect, but I don't think it looks bad. I'd take pictures, but I'm embarrassed by the dirtyness of the rims(and the rest of my car) If there is no rain for a few days, I'll go get it washed and get some pictures.
BTW, ImprezedRS, the calipers aren't aluminum, they're iron. Only the 2-pot rears were aluminum. So you'll probably get rust if you leave it exposed.

Just on a side note, a number of guys have recommended primer before painting. Most high temp paints recommend no primer use. If you do use a primer its gonna need to be a high temp primer of almost exactly the same compostion as the topcoat. If the two paints expand at different rates or the primer is not high enough in the temp rating, its gonna come off.
