Painted Side Skirts part 1

bs006 08-13-2003 03:30 AM

Painted Side Skirts
I have a silver 2003 wrx and I called around a few paint shops about painting the side skirts and most were not comfortable painting them because of the textured surface and said the paint would probably chip off after a while.

For those of you who have painted your side skirts did you encounter the same response from the shops or did you do something else to make it work or what???

Thanks!
codemunky 08-13-2003 05:21 AM

They would need to sand it. Any surface you get painted would have to be sanded if you want it to look right.
jacobsen1_ 08-13-2003 08:44 AM

All the shops I went to said the same thing.... A lot of people here have sanded them on their own, and have had great results.... I wanted to not have to worry about the paint ever coming off, and on silver, the only way to get the silver rubber gasket is to buy silver skirts, so I bought them painted instead. It costs a bit more, but they look great. Look at your black skirts now, and you will see a small ruber strip between them and the bottom of the doors. This is silver when you buy skirts, but when you get them painted it will be black still. For me that was worth the extra $$$ and anything black annoys me, and I don't have to worry about the paint....

I didn't bother asking any shops. Did all my own prep work and painting. Cleaning, sanding, adhesion promoter and flexible primer. Then custom spray cans of WRB and finally clearcoat. And I had paint left over which I used to give myself the mythical color-matched rubber gasket. Less than $100 in materials (including the cost of a spare set of sideskirts for the job) and a couple afternoons of work (one for prepping, one for painting).
kenchan 08-13-2003 10:38 AM

you can sand them, but i didn't. the trick is to use adhesion promotor as primer, than your base coat will stick just fine.

i painted mine over a year ago and no chips or flakes.

hit my www button for the paint i used (scroll down close to
the bottom).

I think I have seen teh regular skirts painted for under 230
jacobsen1_ 08-13-2003 02:40 PM

This debate has been had several times here before.....

Regardless of how you paint them, just do it, because I think we will all agree that the car looks MUCH better with them painted.... Some people are more crafty, and like DIY jobs like this, I would rather spend the extra $ and not have to deal with it. My biggest issue was that none of the paint shops in my are would attempt it because they said it might chip.... I know others with them painted have had no problems, but the shops I have near me, weather they are good or not, wouldn't do it, so to cut out all of the headaches buying them painted was much easier for me.....

Who cares how you get 'em, just get 'em, but if you can save the $$$ do it that way...

Zola 08-13-2003 04:04 PM

I totally agree with Ben...this is one of the best visual upgrades you can make for your car.
Tobey 08-13-2003 05:30 PM

the subaru skirts (from what i hear) are just the oem ones painted.

if a body shop is worth a damn, they can paint them. i had mine painted and sold them 3 months later without a chip on them. there will be problems if they don't use flex agent or if there is armorall or something in the plastic.

Painted side-skirts. $100 to sand-prime-paint.
Tek 08-14-2003 12:20 AM

looks so clean WReXinEfX, was that done by you or did you actually find a shop to do it? the pic looks like the paint matched perfect.

Like I said, the shop took the side skirts, sanded it, primed it, and painted them. The color took them about 2 weeks to color-matched. They had various customers complain about the 1st few batches. Luckily I was on the tail end of things and got painted on the last batch which color matched quite nice.

$100 job.
NewShockerGuy 08-15-2003 03:21 AM

I have a sonic yellow rex, are there OEM sonic yellow side skirts?

If I take them to a good body shop that paints, will I have to tell them to put a flex agent in the paint?

I would actually like to try to paint them myself from the above link to where you can actually order the paint... but they don't have clear coat for the subaru? Plus I have never done that before.... I just want them painted but I don't want to spend a ungodly amount of money for it...

jacobsen1_ 08-15-2003 07:37 AM

You can't order them in yellow (either flavor) so you will have to go the body shop route. Good Luck, and I would suggest asking people who have done it for advice on what they did to make it a $100 job. If you sand, and do the prepping, and let the shop paint and clear coat it shouldn't be a whole lot more than$100.

Good Luck!

If you do a search on "painted sideskirts", you should be able to find a wealth of information on this topic.

I ordered custom spray cans from http://www.paintworldinc.com (supplied them with my color code and they matched it perfectly). Clear coat is clear coat...available for a couple bucks per can from any auto parts store. You should note that the website I just mentioned does not put a flex agent in their paint. Instead, I used SEH grey flexible primer, for use on automotive plastics.
kalbo-1 08-15-2003 12:09 PM

It really erks me that Subaru only sells certain colors for their kits? I mean they totally ignored color matching the yellow and red WRX's. But they'll still charge you painted prices even though it doesn't match your car? If anything they should give you a discount when you order a lip or rear lip as long as you give the vin of you car that will prove that the car is red or yellow? But then again you can't have everyting that you want.........
evil's girl 08-15-2003 12:16 PM

here's a question:
I'm getting my sideskirts painted sometime next week (around $100 or less), but I also want to paint those stupid little black pieces that come up the wheel well. Anyone know the easy way to remove them? I know it's not just double sided tape holding them in....

those are a pita to remove. what i did on mine was get
some silver decal sheets from a print shop, cut it out to its
general size, then heatgun it to fit perfectly and trimmed off
the excess. looks great. plus, that area is prone to rocks
hitting it so i would recommend a replaceable sheet than
paint. :p

i posted a pict over at i - club.com either dressup or silver
impreza forum. i think it was the dressup forum.

I suppose it's a moot point now that you already have your car, but you can get the skirts painted by the dealer before you pick up the car. This way the colour will match perfectly. I got the best price I could on the car AND THEN told my dealer I wouldn't buy the car unless he painted the skirts - FOR FREE.

the car was ready for pick up 3 days later. I've had it for about 2 months now and no chips so far.

that looks clean, i guess if all else fails i can check the dealer's prices for their paint jobs. it'll more than likely be way too much though.

yeah, through all my research i never saw any site or dealership that sold midnight black skirts. that sucks for you. :(

looks like you'll have to get it paint matched one way or another.
HongKongBeef 09-11-2003 02:54 PM

got mine stockers painted for $80. still look good after 2 years! no chips, no nuttin.
SjpWrx 09-11-2003 06:22 PM

If your going to do this do it right. dont waste your time half assing it for it to chip and having to go spend another 80 of you money to paint it again..

PS i was lazy and just bought them:D
LEOSPEED 09-11-2003 08:11 PM

hongkongbeef, did you sand the sideskirts youself before bringing them to bodyshop? $80 is so cheap, where you get them painted?
thanks
HongKongBeef 09-12-2003 02:28 PM

we had a group paint deal back in the day. i forgot the place. it was pretty ghetto, but they did a good job. and they were FAST. like i had them the next day. It was in redwood city i believe.
