Pastrana in a Subaru for 2004 ProRally part 1

Pastrana in a Subaru for 2004 ProRally
I did a search, and all that came up was some stuff about Pastrana linked to SWRT, not ProRally.

I'm wondering, with the absence of SRT-USA, if someone at SWRT put him in a Vermont Sports Car Subaru as a sort of test. Does this mean his goal of a WRC drive might soon be realized?

From: http://www.scca.org/news/press04_05.html
[b]OPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 20, 2004) The Sports Car Club of America, Inc. announced today that ESPN Summer X-Games superstar Travis Pastrana will compete in the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship.

Pastrana, 20, will drive a Production GT class, silver 2002 Subaru Impreza WRX, built by Vermont Sports Car, the same prep shop responsible for the Championship-sweeping vehicles driven by last years SCCA ProRally Overall Drivers Champion David Higgins and second-place finisher Lauchlin OSullivan.

This is the first time Pastrana has ever competed in the SCCA ProRally Championship.

I am really excited about being involved with a new sport, said the Annapolis, Md.-native. I am looking forward to my first race and am also excited for the season ahead.

Christian Edstrom, OSullivans co-driver from a year ago, has agreed to be Pastranas teammate at Sno*Drift. The two may pair up for more events in the SCCA ProRally Championship, but as of now, Sno*Drift is the only certainty.

Were meeting up the weekend of the 24th to have our strategy discussions, said Edstrom. Well start off nice and steady on Friday and turn up the wick a little on Saturday. The goal is clearly to finish and get as many stage miles as possible under our belts.

As far as his drivers potential in rally, Edstrom thinks Pastrana has the tools to do well.

I think rally and motocross share lots of skills, said Edstrom. Its all about weight transfer, anticipating how much traction is available for cornering versus accelerating and so on.

I anticipate (Travis) will come up to speed very quickly and have the potential to do very well.

Pastrana earned national fame competing in various levels of both freestyle and motocross competition from the age of four. He won his first motocross amateur championship in 1992 and since then has won five amateur titles in all. In 1998, Pastrana won the World Freestyle Championship at age 14.

The Sno*Drift ProRally, Round One of the 2004 SCCA ProRally Championship, is set for Jan. 30-31. For more information regarding Sno*Drift, check out www.sno-drift.org.

Hope he does better than he did in the Porsche Supercup race at Indy :)

He has not got a chance of getting a works drive. If he doesnt suck he may be able to get funding for a privateer campaign in PWRC or JWRC, but to get a WRC ride takes an enormous amount of experience, management backing and you have to show flashes of brilliance. Now is a very dificult time to get a seat even for the most skilled drivers out there.

HE balled up this car at ROC................. Its a good thing hes starting off in a PGT car! Thats a bunch of a cr-ap that he gets his Pro license without even running club events to get to a seed 5!
cvalle-sd 01-21-2004 10:30 AM

yeh, it smacks of the "Jeff Gordon in F1" talk. Being famous here doesn't mean much when practically EVERY European who can reach the pedals wants the same gig, has been working to get it since before he could reach the pedals, and is just plain better at it anyway. I understand and encourage the efforts to get "us" into the top series, but if it just comes about as a result name recognition and $, without the ability to threaten the championship, it'll just make everybody more certain that Americans "arent interested" and/or "aren't good enough". I want to see the 16-18 year old American kid who's doing rallycross and club rally right now get into the WRC in 8-10 years, not some 20-30something "star" from a different discipline altogether getting plugged into a weak/doomed ride because the money's right. I know there are plenty of F1 drives for sale, but... y'know. Nobody's getting too excited about the guy who buys his way into an Arrows, and there's not even enough money in the WRC for Colin McRae to do that.

Theres a BIG difference between Pastrana in WRC and Gordon in F1. Namely, driver skill. Gordon can drive damn well... Pastrana can crash damn well, apparently :)

But, ignoring his future aspirations for a moment, I think this is great news for the US rally scene. Pastrana is a popular guy.

True. This will probably bring more coverage to the sport than all of the TV coverage on speed channel ever did.
Recce01 01-21-2004 12:16 PM

Pastrana
I followed Travis to the rally school in England after the 01 rally GB. He started in an escort, moved up to a recce car and then had a couple of hot laps with the wrc car. He showed potental, went fairly quickly, but he was on or off, no in between. He will probably be very fast or upside down!!
TimStevens 01-21-2004 12:18 PM

I noticed the same thing when he was racing Porsches at the USGP. He was very quick, showed good speed and tactics, but spun constantly, and crashed out of the final race.
Recce01 01-21-2004 01:22 PM

this about sums it up!!
hope he has lots of parts on hand:lol:

3rd...they give him the keys to a recce car

Recce01 01-21-2004 05:31 PM

then comes the WRC car
next day: team goes to Sweet Lamb to give Travis a spin in the WRC car!

They let him run until he dented their hospitality rig with rocks and tore off the bumpers

You can get a Pro License by proving that you have some equivlant experience that justifies it.

e.g. I have a ProRally license...
WRXMaster 01-21-2004 08:59 PM

So rally school and rally sprint lets him run pro? I had road racing experience.........rally school.......... rally sprints ......shifter karts........Last year I tried to get my pro license but they said absolutly no! SO I had to work my a$$ off " and spend alot of $$$:furious: to get to a seed 5....... just venting
cvalle-sd 01-21-2004 11:43 PM

But he's the guy from the thing on the TV!

If you can do a stale fish, or a backflip, or kick ass at the street luge, we'll talk.

Did you ask John Macarthur?

He was lucky to have survived the wadding up of his Corvette.

And this is just another reason why I hate you with a passion John Felstead.

Hey, I'm still trying to plan a trip over to the UK in the Spring; perhaps for the Pirelli International round of the BRC. Are you attending or fielding a car this year John???

Bonzo 01-22-2004 01:32 PM

Roger Penske said you can always pull a drivers limits back but can never make him push past his limit.

he's young, obviously has more talent than most and is a natural behind the mic/tv. Something sponsors like and they allow the show happen.
johnfelstead 01-22-2004 10:38 PM

We have just sold the Escort Cosworth and are now building a new car, a MK2 Escort 2.0 to compete in the 2005 National 2WD championship.

The hope is we will have the car ready in time to enter the RAC http://www.rogeralbertclarkrally.co.uk/ rally this year.

GroupA was getting dificult to justify on cost and we were being left behind by all these ex works WRC cars, so we are off to have some fun in a RWD screemer. :D Last time we ran at this level we won the national championship.

Ahhh Mark....:(

On topic: I think this is a good thing. Bring some more exposure to the sport. Kind alike Shaun Palmer racing PPIHC?
HoRo1 01-23-2004 12:04 AM

Who the hell is Travis Pastrana?

"Pastrana earned national fame competing in various levels of both freestyle and motocross competition from the age of four. He won his first motocross amateur championship in 1992 and since then has won five amateur titles in all. In 1998, Pastrana won the World Freestyle Championship at age 14."

I mean really, who is he other than a kid on a motorbike? Did I blink and miss some snot-nose's 15 minutes of fame?

Edit; what is freestyle? I've seen bike guys lap GP circuits standing on their heads, I've seen 'em lap facing backwards - good party tricks to be sure.

PS - I don't watch the X games.

i think that up untill recently he had never lost a freestyle event that he entered.
nKoan 01-23-2004 01:30 AM

I don't watch the X-Games either, but one day I was flipping through the channels and ended up watching the Gravity Games (similar to the X-Games). When I saw Pastrana do his runs, I was literally blown away. I later found out he seemed to have an unnatural talent on a motorcycle.

I don't really like motorcycle racing or motocross or freestyle, but this kid is amazing on a bike. Now, lets see what he can do in a rally car.
WRXedUSA 01-23-2004 02:35 AM

I kinda think we've seen what he can do with a rally car. ROC and Mark in the picture above wondering where the bumper went.
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 07:26 PM

Yeah, but
Realistically, whatever he does in a rally car, good or bad, is going to be far more entertaining anything else currently offered up by US rallying.
nKoan 01-23-2004 07:34 PM

I don't think its really fair to discout the entertainment value of all the rest of the people in ProRally.

I always found the privateers much more fun then the factory teams anyways.
johnfelstead 01-23-2004 07:56 PM

TV3WRX, you cant mean that the way it sounds?
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 08:22 PM

Well, tell me how it sounds, and i'll tell you.
wait, let me say it again with British accent......

ok sorry John, just kidding. I'm not sure what was confusing about the comment, but to rephrase it, I think it will be more entertaining to follow his US rally "experiment", regardless of how well he does or does not do, than anything else currently going on in the US rally scene. We tend to be too close to it to objectively judge it, because we love it, but it is going backwards more than forwards. No sponsors, no media, no fan turnout, etc. I know I will get flamed for that, but, whatever.
nKoan 01-23-2004 08:30 PM

Thats fine with me. There were too many people at RIM of the World last year anyways. :D
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 08:33 PM

Um, all 10 of them?
I was there, too. In the rain and cold. So I know you must be joking.
nKoan 01-23-2004 08:37 PM

I was mainly refering to the Parc Expose and Spunky Canyon. Definitely sucked compared to the year before, and mainly due to congestion.
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 08:44 PM

OK
Turnout was bigger the year before, 2002, at the spectator stage in town. I saw a lot of mud in 2003 but I don't remember seeing any congestion. In talking to some of the parc expose vendors who took the time to go and set up shop, they would have loved to see more congestion. Many exhibitors hardly thought it was worth it to be there.
johnfelstead 01-23-2004 08:56 PM

****, even I was at the Rim of the world in 2003.

It wasnt that busy? That wasnt rain either. ;) The roads sucked with the way they turned into a mudbath though, so much for california dreaming. :D

Maybe with the factory teams gone the people who really make Club and Pro Rally survive and prosper, and who have the real stories to tell about what the sport means get some airing.

I hope having a "celebrity" in the ranks doesnt take the focus away from the other competitors, but in fact helps highlight them.

If this guy gets coverage and the person who kicks his ass in the same class doesnt, i will be very pissed off and might have to come over and have a word. ;):D
nKoan 01-23-2004 08:58 PM

Yeah true. I'm just being a bitter fan who doesn't want the masses there :P Even if lots of spectators are good for basically everyone but cranky-old-man-me.

It was fun, though, seeing all the different vendors there. I got to meet plenty of cool people from MRT and Alcan Rally (as well as nasioc.com :))

EDIT: Yeah John, I guess there weren't too many people, compared to European and WRC events. I guess I'll just shut my mouth and concede that it wasn't that crowded :D.
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 09:23 PM
I hope having a "celebrity" in the ranks doesnt take the focus away from the other competitors, but in fact helps highlight them.
That's exactly the point. Because without that, there will be no "airing". It isnt even a pimple on the ass of US motorsports in terms of "airing". I know you are close with one or two of the drivers, but when you step away from that, well, it's a not very compelling product right now.
TV3WRX 01-23-2004 09:26 PM

Having said that
I do have high hopes for RIM this year. I think its going to be a far better event.
nKoan 01-23-2004 10:07 PM

Yeah, me too. I've already booked my hotel room :)
sirfrankwilliams 01-23-2004 11:18 PM

I got plenty wet last year too, but I'm still coming back for 2004 even if the factory teams aren't.

John, you could make a repeat appearence and peddle your much anticipated video!
johnfelstead 01-24-2004 07:04 PM

You never know Frank. :D

As a person that runs three cars in SCCA with the loss of TV we will not be doing a National program this year but instead focusing on the Western Events. Without TV there is not money, what Travis brings like it or not is an excuse for other media outlets to cover rally in the US. We need as much TV and other media exposure that we can get and I a msure that there will be a few more reporters covering each event just because they want his story. He also gives us all more motivation. If you want to see some of his rally driving tune into motorsport Mondial today to see him at the ROC.

Good luck to Travis and all the crews @ Sno*Drift. I'll be up there on Friday so perhaps I'll get a few pics of Mr. Pastrana. :D
