Pastrana's rally car...not what it seems?
Last night at HIN in NY, i got a chance to get up close to Travis's rally car. As far as you can tell from the outside, its a widebody 06 STi rally car. I mean the interior is different obviously but it had the brembos and everything. When I sat in it, the first thing i noticed that was off was that it had a bugeye gauge cluster. Weird, but not impossible i thought. Then i cycled through the gears and to my surprise, it only had 5. Then I got out and opened the hood and there sat a normal 02 WRX motor. Had some sort of catted downpipe, looked like MRT. I cant figure out for the life of me what the deal with that car was. Why not just use a real STi?

PS. Those Sparco/Prodrive seats are awsome

homer227 08-13-2006 12:19 PM

Are you forserious?
DILLIGAF Racing 08-13-2006 12:20 PM

well, my guess is its an older car that they are using for show purposes. I mean you could see the reverse lock out on the shifter when they showed the cars from the inside during the race.

Plus, I thought I saw that he had Recaro seats in the car.

it was a show car.

the new one from the x games is a new 06 shell w/a crapload of CF inside and a custom gauge panel.

i am sure christian will chime in here w/the correct details as usual.

the x games car (the new open class car) is featured in C16 Autostyle magaizine, http://www.c16magazine.com/ .

See thats what I figured. The guys who had it there kept saying "no, this is the car that he drove in the Xgames". I imagine your right though.

who were these "guys?"

here are some very good pics of the Open Class X Games cars from flat over crest.

JC_595 08-13-2006 01:14 PM

I am confident it was a show car built out of old parts/chassis. If I were Lance, there is no way I would have one of the last couple chassis I just built at HIN with people crawling in/on it.

That's what we used to do for NASCAR anyway- use the old/outdated chassis & reskin em for show cars. The general public never knew the difference.

The X games chassis were fresh 06's with nothin in the clusters but a tach if I recall from pics & lots o carbon inside. Check the FoC pics.

after the past few years of uber exposure out little subaru world has been exploited too far already, now the xgames.

damn i gotta get an GC soon...

just to say F you buddy, i was a subaru freak before you know they existed!

thats the truth though, i was obsessed in middle school in like 1996 before the RS was even here!

i really want a pic of a first gen legacy on a shirt with "Roots" under it.

or a GL
bjorn240 08-13-2006 03:05 PM

It's a show car. It looks like a rally car. The shell is seam-welded and caged, so in a worst-case scenario, it can be built into a rally car in less than a week's time, but it's not a rally car.

Oh, and all the rally cars have 5 speed gearboxes.
Slvrblt 08-13-2006 03:40 PM

a lot of the time, they'll have an older chassis and just transplant the newer style front and rear on the car to comply with the sponsor wishes

what tranny did they swap out the six speed for in his real car?
Osgood30 08-13-2006 04:22 PM

I am pretty sure that its regular 6-speed transmission case, but all the gears inside are replaced. They all use dogboxes.

Alex
bjorn240 08-13-2006 05:50 PM

Oh, yeah, and the seats we use are Recaro ProRacer HANS SPA. Alex is right; the transmissions use the standard 6-speed case, but use a set of Gr. N homologated 5 speed gears. Full details on the actual rally cars is available in the current issue of C16 Autostyle magazine. I really just know about the rally computer, and which fuses to start testing if something goes wrong.

(Oh, and since I usually have to prove my Subaru bonafides in threads that contain Travis's name... I'm his co-driver. :) )

Who is this Christian you speak of? . . . . I thought Travis' co driver was named Edstom? (it says so on the side of the car!) :D :D :D
Crashsector 08-13-2006 08:42 PM

And to clarify... Travis and Christian run in Group N in Rally America... hence the "normal WRX engine."
psg 08-13-2006 09:07 PM
And to clarify... Travis and Christian run in Group N in Rally America... hence the "normal WRX engine."
They're in Open class this year. They've said that it's essentially a Group-N (PWRC) car without the homologated interior, but I believe they're running the EJ25 this year. Even if it's an EJ20, it's far from a normal WRX engine. [Waits for Christian...]

hoche 08-13-2006 09:34 PM

Hey Christian,

How do they get Travis's car so clean between events? Is it completely torn down every time? I like to keep mine pretty clean inside, but there's always nooks and crannies I can't get to unless I take it all apart.
StuBeck 08-13-2006 09:41 PM

They usually even clean the car between runs.

i think VtSC has an army of spidermonkeys whose single purpose is to clean rally cars.
How do they get Travis's car so clean between events?
I don't know exactly how the cars are cleaned at the shop. For certain the seats and harnesses are taken out and the insides are washed. The outsides and wheel wells are likely pressure washed.

Additionally, the cars are cleaned at all services and we try to keep them neat inside, so they never really get that dirty.

And also, as Lance likes to remind us, it's not Travis's car. He just gets to drive it. :)

Yeah, you know I was talking about the Vermont SportsCar built ones. The GrN cars, the old Open cars (ie the GrN cars), and the new Open cars all have five speed transmissions.
CPTsWRX 08-15-2006 01:27 AM

So what is Travis' screen name on here?
bjorn240 08-15-2006 07:01 AM

Travis doesn't post on any message boards, a sad result of his not really having a deskjob and a fast internet connection. You'll have to make do with me.

and while this isnt nasty this is probably another reason why he stays away from the internet.

i know i would too if i were him.

the constant trash the guy gets on here (and other places) is really getting old.

travis is a class act all the way. and is clearly very skilled at what he does.

Here here...just because he's not the "hardcore hated by soccer Moms worldwide" racer doesn't mean he's bad or dorky or whatever. Travis is one of the luckiest people I've met. He gets to play around w/fun stuff and gets paid for it. Can't beat that w/a 10 ft pole.

He's in the same boat as Tony Hawk was when I was growing up...Tony was more "mainstream" and the "core" guys didn't like him. Now look @ him.
Chp_Stix 08-15-2006 10:05 PM

Yeah you can pick on travis when you got the grapefruits to stick a double backflip, and you can talk about him being a punk whne you do stick that double backflip and the first person to see is your mom, you give her a hug and thank her for her support before you go and run around with your friends. I would say he is a pretty stand up guy!

Travis has always had a great attitude. I'm glad he's having fun driving now.

I.r.o.c.
Now there's a though.

The time would seem right for RA to take the momentum of the X-Games and try to parley it into a driver spot in the I.R.O.C. series (you know, the International Race Of Circle-trackers, I mean Champions ;) )

Heck, the series has even started turning left and right again this year.
