Pick a knob

My parents are spending about 100 bucks on my for christmas and I can't think of anything aside from a MOMO shift knob. I was checking out their site but I can't decide on which one to get. Race, Race S, what's the difference between the two?
Pick me a knob. Serious picks only please.
http://www.ltbmotorsports.com/shiftknob.html
If I shouldn't get a knob, please suggest something around the 100 dollar mark for my subie.

Take the cash and get a JDM STi Titanium Piston style knob...

What about a Kartboy knob? Those are $40 new. They look nice also.

I like the look of the momo air leather/alloy. I've never tried it though but it still gets my vote. :)

if you don't have a short shifter i would go with that first, then a knob. You probably can get a used short shifter for $50 and a used kartboy knob for $30 and $20 for pizza.

NO MOMO. They are poorly designed, cheaply made and most importantly over priced. I made the mistake and have to live with it. Learn and tell others, NO GO for MOMO.

i whole heartedly agree. momo is overpriced, poorly designed, and made for the masses rather than tailored for specific makes.
i use the Prova knob and love it! the Perrin knob feels great too, but it gets damn cold in the winter, hence the reason why i chose the polymer Prova, doesn't get hot or cold in the summer/winter.

What about RAZO shift knobs? They seem to be gettin popular and look pretty good.
| Lachlan | 12-18-2004 12:19 AM |
How about a prodrive? Not sure how much they are but my guess is around the same as momo, and available at many subie dealers.

STi titanium piston or Prodrive. I've had both, kept the STi, though the Prodrive was also really really nice.

MOMO Race Airleather!! it matched the interior perfectly. it's also very comfortable (no metal shift knobs for me - they're not summer friendly) i didnt have any issues with MOMO's fit/finish. i see that the shop you found is selling them for $69. i think it's good value.
| Bonjo2 | 12-19-2004 01:47 AM |
I bet you could talk them into the kartboy with shifter and shift bushing...

The knobs with the plastic boot holder are best if you ask me.
I have had the MOMO, Prodrive, and I'm waiting on a Sub Ti 5mt knob.
The Momo was junk. There system for instalation is piss poor. Stick with knobs desighned for the car. I know MOMO has a Sub specific one. I have no experience with it.

i have a momo airleather..i actually like it alot and it looks pretty oem. i didnt have any problems with installation or anything like that.

The MOMO airleather available from the dealership is nice. I just got it. I wasn't sure how I'd like it but it feels great and it is plug & play. No set screws or crappy plastic inserts. Only drawback is it is cold in the morning. I mean icy cold the last few days.

i have the momo air leather (leather upper, leather lower, momo emblem on top). i've had it about 14 months before the leather started peeling at the seam. it's peeled about 1/16" and stopped, and has been that way for 2-3 months. Under normal driving, you can't tell. It's only once you start peeling on the bottom front of the knob, where the seam for the bottom leather piece starts, that a corner pops up for you.
I love the weight of the shift knob, and i've used it to perfect my techniques of heel-toe double-clutch downshifting, and rev-matching. i never shift without these techniques now, unless i'm doing a simple upshift under acceleration, and i have to say the knob made the difference for me. i don't like the notchy feedback from a short shift kit, although i agree they have an advantage over my setup (stock linkage and bushings) during upshifts, they aren't as finesse-able during a double-clutch. I want to save up and get something like the Cobb double-adjustable shift linkage. For now, this knob lowered the peak height of the shifter by a few inches, and added a nice grabbing surface. The leather is the same as the wheel's, so after some hand oil was transferred, it's had the same stickiness as the wheel had ever since. When I switch to a flexible short-shift kit, I plan to keep this knob on the car... after a little gluing of the leather, of course.

I personally didn't like the feel of the titanium STi piston shifter knob so I sold it. I replaced it with a Momo Sphere-Aluminum.
I like the Prodrice shift knobs too but I wanted to "match" the Momo knob with the Momo steering wheel. However, I recently noticed the Momo Race, which is a brushed aluminum shift knob with a similar Momo "badge" as the steering wheel.
One thing to keep in mind... the knob tends to get real cold in the winter and hot during the summer.
Good luck.

For the race air leather... only the emblem on top and the tightening ring around the bottom get cold/hot. The leather is the same as the leather on the sides of the WRX wheel, so-so warm in the summer, and so-so chilly in the winter.

I went with the Prodrive Group-N shift Knob from Chaste Automotive, they are a little hard to come by but I think it is an AWESOME knob.

I'd recommend getting a short shifter if you don't already have one as well. Makes a much bigger difference than a shift knob.
I have the Momo aluminum sport, it's all metal, so theoretically it could get very hot and very cold at times. I haven't had any issues with this, but YMMV. I think the Race Airleather would match the stock interior very well if that's a priority.

Get $23.00 more and buy this. Just keep the factory knob. Stealth is so much better. Besides, there are only a few good looking knobs out there. kartboy.com

jus save a tad more and get the kartboy ss and bushings.... you won't regret it.

| Lachlan | 12-22-2004 12:29 AM |
I have to agree that for the best shifter feel get a short sifter and bushings, but a big heavy metal shift knob isn't just for looks--it helps the feel too.

Void Warrentee?

Does the short shifter void the warrantee? Annoying if it does. What if you get the dealer to install the friggin thing.
| Siper2 | 12-22-2004 07:07 AM |
For $100, if that's the absolute budget, skip the knob altogether and get a Kartboy short shifter. Unless you have one already, it's the best $100 bill most of us have ever spent on our cars.
The smartest way to go would be to buy the triple package, including shifter, knob and bushings. Saves a bit of money that way.

Mine didn't, but then again I never told them about it. If they tried to void your warrantee, there's enough info on these boards from Kartboy/Tom & Mark Deadrick, Scoobymods.com and other sources to prove the shifter's not going to damage your transmission/synchros. It was designed with that in mind, keeping the essential pivot points and geometry intact. Tom & Mark have defended this argument many times. :)
Easiest way to install it is with a 32oz. rubber mallet. Trust me!

IMO, if you have to feel the Legacy GT shift knob. I almost bought the MOMO air leather knob but went with the LGT one instead. IT feels SOOOO Much better shifting, because of the flat top.
