Placing OEM STi emblem on USDM WRX Ricey?
Would you guys consider that being ricey? I know STi is Subaru's performance area in the company. But if we were to order OEM STi emblems and badge our cars identical to the STi's in Japan, would that be like an Integra LS putting the Type R badge on the car as well?
I love the STi emblems and such, and i'd like to go for the JDM look, but I don't want people thinking i'm a "Fake" STi model WRX or something, you know?
What's everybody's opinion on this?

Another thing, anybody have any close-up photos of the JDM Spec STi, as to where exactly the emblems go and such.
As far as I know the JDM STi has the WRX Impreza emblem (with red outlining instead of blue) on the bottom left side and a smaller STi emblem bottom right of the trunk. And no S U B A R U lettering in the middle.
Are there any additions to the sides of the JDM STi car? Like any decals and such?
The way I see this whole STi hype, is kind of like Toyota does with their cars. I think an option for the Toyota trucks is to have obnoxious TRD stickers placed on the sides. Pretty much giving props to the performance side of Toyota.
And I feel like people sporting non-obtrusive STi emblems on their WRX as well as 2.5RS just shows people that you're "sporty" and a fan of the Subaru Performance team.

huh? *scratches head*
sorry, but my vote goes for rice if you're trying to make it look identical to a JDM WRX. if you put some sti parts on and then put an sti sticker on aftewards (particularly if you put stickers on from other performance addons) it's just part of the dressup. but that's just me. some people would say go for it, some would say any stickers at all are rice, and still others, and this actually includes me, would say to do whatever you think would be cool.

I always thought that putting STI decals on your wrx to purposly make it looks like the JDM STI was kinda riceish, but then I saw a pic of a black USDM WRX that looked almost like an exact replica of the STI(even had the correct 17inch gold rims), and i thought it looked great. But then i thought, but its not really an STI so it's almost like an integra gsr with an type-r badge. I agree thought to do what makes you happy, but don't try to pass your car off as something its not IMO. I have a "tuned by STI" decal on my IC that looks great IMO, I have seen it on older wrx intercoolers and think they came stock on the old STI model IIRC.

well, I have all the STi emblems, covers, door sills, grill, headlights, the only thing missing is the red intake manifold and the gold wheels. My car looks great I love it. That way I see it..., First: I don't consider myself a rice boy because my car WILL ACTUALLY perform (sorry.. WILL OUTPERFORM) the acutal STI once I put COBB's RT Spec Package. How could you be considered a rice bot when your car performs better than the type R or in this case the STi. Second: The STi is not being sold in the U.S. (at least not yet) so there is no reason why anybody should feel bad since we cannot rob the attention of real STi owners. Unlike what happened with the Integra type R, where a lot REAL type R owners were doubt several times about their genuine type R's. And Third, by bearing STi emblems, I don't consider nor wanna flame STi but in the other hand I'm proud of what STi is accomplishing and I just feel like a great supporter of them :)

I'm not trying to "Act" like i'm a STi model WRX or something, I just like the cleanness of the trunk the STi model has, and like the other guy said, the small little STi would go on the trunk to signify i'm proud of what Subaru has done over the years in the WRC. I'm not trying to "trick" people into think I imported a STi model in the States or something. If I wanted to be rediculous I'll just put the replica WRC stickers all up and down my car.
As far as Hondas, I won't bash a Civic DX that has the SI sticker on the back if he had swapped in the SI motor.
But since STi is a "group" I think sporting a STi sticker/emblem on a car wouldn't be rice.. just showing the Love for Subarus.

Sti
Hey, the way I take is, if you have a Subaru, have a part that thats STi or SPO based....... Show it! It doesn't matter, just do what you like and makes you happy. I read one time on here that someone modded his WRX to look like a 2.5, complete with a stock hood (F/M intercooler). Thats what he wanted to do. Be original, outragious, daring, or 'rice'. Be Happy. Dont worry 'bout the rest!
| industrial | 06-08-2002 05:37 AM |
In my honest opinion, it's absolutely "rice". Your putting stickers/emblems on your car that belong on another car. Although I think the JDM look alike route is pretty unoriginal I can't deny that it looks good when done correctly. But really why care what others think? It's your car. If it makes ya smile then your doing the right thing.

You all are right, how ricey of me to even bring this up.
Sometimes I get these ricey tendencies, guess that came from learning the racing scene from the wrong group of people.. Sigh.. I feel so ashamed!
Ok, i'll just debadge the S U B A R U and leave the rest of the car alone. =)
I was gonna do that ANYWAYS, so THERE... HMPH.

STi, of course, is not just a model of WRX though. It's an entire line of performance parts, and that usage of those parts on one model gave it the model name "STi". I say it's fine to put an STi sticker/emblem on your car, just don't put it in the same spot as the ones as the STi model and you won't be perceived as trying to fake people out.
I've never understood the whole "make my car look like the model I don't have" thing, but hey that's just me.

i say if u have sti parts on your ride, its okay to put an sti sticker on like on the door, window, fogs or wherever. But if you buy the sti badges and put them in the exact location as the wrx sti, then thats kinda rice. The wrx sti badge in the grill and on the back IMO on u.s wrx is kinda ricey. But hey just like others have said, its your car and you do it if you like the look.

Hey man, not everyone's going to like what you do to your car, just like you're not going to like what others do to their own cars. I don't see how a little badge is going to make you look like Johnny Rice Paper with an Electron Blue Civic SI with Skyline GT-R badging (I've seen it), a 20" hish aircraft aluminum wing with extra wobble due to improper tightening of the nuts and bolts, adjusted to provide enough downforce at 200mph to hold 4 civics on the road, upside down.
However, I have to admit that I would at least get the STi short throw shift kit, or muffler, or SOMETHING, just so you can't be accused of faking it. If you have the parts, you have the parts!
I myself have a WR Blue Pearl WRX, with yellow vynil all over it in a fairly close approximation of the rally car setup. Unfortunately for me some people think it looks ricey, but I love what i've done with my rex, and a lot of other Impreza owners always flash their brights and give me the huge thumbs up. Unfortunately the dealer I bought my WRX at seems to occaisionally sell WRX's with pretty much my same exact graphics, only slightly modified (and crappier looking IMO).
Do what you want to do, and don't pay any mind to those that don't like it. Unless of course there's an overwhelming majority of people letting you know you made a mistake.........then maybe they're trying to tell you something!

Rice or not, you guys make a good point about trying to make you Dub look like something that it isn't. Too many of those cheap-tuner kids do that with their Hondas / Acuras, and it makes me laugh. I guess if you are modding your Dub with STi stuff that makes it a little more understandable, though.

i havent really posted on here before..think this is my second post. Decided to reply cuz this RICE business really pisses me off. STI is a performance line. If u have STI stuff on ur car go ahead stick that mother... on there. I know i know theres a STI model in japan. But MUGEN is a performance line for Honda. I see hondas with Mugen badges. looks nice if u have actually Mugen ***** on ur car. IMO sticking a STI badge on a WRX is completely different from sticking a type R badge on a LS teg. LIke all the other people have said..its ur car..dont ask people..should i do this..should i do that..STOP F*CKING asking if doing this will make ur car RICE. If you like it...just do it!

IMHO, don't do it. expecially since the STi will eventually be coming to the US. unless you have an extensive list of STi parts installed on your car, I wouldn't recommend it.

the question was whehter putting sti "emblems" on the car in the same locations as the JDM car is rice, not whether sti stickers were rice. the overwhelming response is 'yes - sti emblems in the jdm locations is rice, sti stickers are not (if you've got something to back it up)'
i personally agree. i think that 'rice' is doing anything to your car that a) looks tacky (highly subjective) b) 'improves the looks' but decreases performance (e.g. cutting springs) c) tries to pass the car off as something it's not (e.g. type R stickers, extraneous *badging*) or d) is really cheap, overdone, and has no other performance goodies to back up the looks (e.g. those lit washer spray nozzles with nothing else - and usually these 'mods' require little to no work and definitely no bravery on behalf of the owner)

Something that might have been forgotten!
You guys are all aware that the WRX engines, no matter what who or where they are sold were made by STI industries. So if it really bothers you that you "aren't" an STI version, rest assured. Every WRX at is under the STI banner from the get go. once I find a nice badge, I'll put it on, and I have a Wagon! :D

IF and I say IF the STi ever comes to america I will remove any STi badging....Thats only if I don't have the complete STi drivetrain conversion finished. But I suspect I will by the end of the fall. So then it would be a bonafide STi clone which I don't think is bad at all. Right now I am sitting with enough power, brakes, and handling to out match the STi version.

What I will do is buy something STi and also visible (not STi spark plug or break pad), then put the badge on...
Like get an STi grill, it will come with a STi emblem, and then add an STi badge on the trunk, atleast you got something STi
I don't think its RICEY when you have something original STi on it
BTW, if my car perform better than STi version WRX, I will still not put any STi badge on my car. Its just my opinion and I am not trying to diss anyone with a fast car and STi emblem
For me, its like you have an Integra LS, and you add on turbo kit and this and that, which will make your LS faster than a Type R... And why you putting an Type R? Your car is not equiped with B18C, its not running a high compression ratio, its not an high rev engine, and its probably still have that black valve cover... People know cars will know its not a Type R and then they will call it rice even its faster than a Type R

This is what I THINK the REAL underlying issue is here:
Are people that are putting Type R / STI stickers on their car:
a) doing it for themselves(because they like it aka like the way it looks, makes them feel etc.)
or
b) to try and show off (doing it to impress other people
I believe people that do it for reason (b) are looked down upon called "rice" etc. by me and most fellow I-club members
Feedback on this post is more than welcome (did I leave a reson out?)

Bottom line: Opinions are like voices, we all have a different kind....
If you want to place a STi badge because you've got STi short shifter and STi suspension then go for it. It's just a badge. I personally, to put my .02 cents in, love the look of the Sti badge. I think it a great look and completes the look of the trunk.
I own an RS and once I've completed the installation of STi spring and struts, short shifter, and possibly the grill will place the STi badge on my car.
If you really like the look the STi badge on your car then you won't care what people think, say, or do. It's your car!

STi tuned? Who said anything about STi tuned? I don't have a plan. My opinion as stated above is: if you've got STi parts, and you want to place a STi badge, you are more than welcome to do that.
I'm replacing the stock struts and springs with STi stocks and springs. I'm replacing the stock muffler with a STi performance muffler. Those, to me, are parts. STi parts to be exact.
If to you that means that my RS would be STi tuned....whatever puts you to sleep at night.

I think the line of seperation (and I don't care if you have parts from an STi roadcar or parts from the STi tuner ) between rice and not rice, is if the STi badging or whatnot is from the roadcar or from something else.
If it's from the road car, you are trying to make people think you have an STi when you don't. Thats rice.
Heck, my car looks partly like mr2guru (fog covers) and will look even more like it soon (lights and grill) but I know I'm rice and accept it. I've got STi suspension (roadcar) and STi Group N motor/tranny mounts (tuner) but I still know I'm rice.

Get a couple of fog covers
I just have a pair of STi fog covers.... along with an STi short shifter, STi exhaust, STi water spray install, 17" UK rims and 4-pot front calipers, side skirts... some other stuff... I have one of those STi titanium shift knobs...
The covers are easily removable and are stowed in a cardboard box in the trunk! The covers are the only thing on my car that shows the STi logo. I take them on and off every time I want a change... I won't ever put a "Badge" that says STi on the trunk or on the doors because I think it is a bit like claiming your car is something it isn't. The covers are sort of half way there... Not quite claiming your car is an STi. They look great, they're functional, they're just STi covers!

The covers are easily removable and are stowed in a cardboard box in the trunk! The covers are the only thing on my car that shows the STi logo. I take them on and off every time I want a change... gee...I fell asleep there for a second...
Is it time again for this thread?
Subie Gal where are you? (great defender of "do what you want to your car")
I've got two STI fender emblems on my car... I sleep fine at night.
But oh no!! I've got seats that have a red STI logo embroidered on the grey alcantara... should I get the scissors? some poor soul might think that my car is rice... or worse yet, think that I'm trying to pass my RS off as an STI oh no!!
I better call my buddy that did the STI engine swap... how dare he think that his car is an STI just because he has the engine... hahahahaha... c'mon folks, it's a freakin' badge.
and the last time I checked "Type-R" was not a performance parts company.
hmmm.... let's see...
I think cars painted the same colour as the rally car is rice.
;)

I agree with you. I think the fogs look good, but the badges are from the wrx sti. The Wrx sti is a model of car. They are also a tuner company for subaru. Fogs i think are okay, but the badges i think are made for the wrx sti. I personally wouldnt put them on my car. But like others have said, do what you like to your car. Its your car, if you like it, Go for it. Not everyone will like what you do to your car. Not everyone will like my car...Oh well. Do your own thing.
