Subie Gal Racing Earns 1st in PGT at Oregon Trail Pro Rally
For Immediate Release - July 15, 2003

Hillsboro, OR-Subie Gal Racing team trekked south into Oregon to once again compete in the Oregon Trail Pro Rally and Club Rally events.

This 2-day event began with frustration and much learning to be done. Since the in-car engine fire at the Reno ClubRally, the teams Subaru WRX had not been running correctly. The car suffered a ton of heat and internal damage leaving no less than 3 engine codes and a load of sensor and wiring issues. Friday night prior to the event, finally at approximately 1am the team and their crew of supporters and technicians were able to clear the codes and had the car running nearly up to specs. This was a huge relief to the team as the car has been well underpowered for 2 events now. Power was needed as Oregon Trail is known for its hilly-climbing stages.

The next challenge for the team was the patience-trying task of learning to use stage notes which are available for purchase at every Pro Rally. These notes differ from the organizer route book in that every bit of the stages is detailed, VERY detailed. Neither team driver Jamie Thomas, nor co-driver Matt Gauger had previous experience with stage notes. Quite the struggle - by the end of the rally, the team had made progress in the notes and were working out how to utilize them in an attempt to be dependant upon them. This challenge brought the team to the ragged edge of their concentration and patience levels, but they persevered in the end.

Notes are REALLY tough to learn at first this cost us a lot of time on some of the stages Subie Gal Racing team driver Jamie Thomas stated, But, Matt stuck with me on them, even though frustration levels were at their peak & in the long run I truly feel we will go much faster because of them.

Racing with Jamie can be a challenge, but ultimately its great. stated co-driver Matt Gauger, I think we can learn to go fast with the notes and have even more fun!

The team battled on to earn 3rd place in PGT in both ClubRally events, as well as earning their FIRST 1st place finish in the SCCA ProRally PGT class. Jamie and all of Subie Gal Racing would like to dedicate this significant first win to the memory of fellow competitors Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman who passed away during the early stages of this event. They will be missed dearly yet their memories will live on as we press on, and rally on in their honor. GodSpeed Mark and Roger

i don't mean this as a slight against anyone or to take away from your achievement, but there is something unwholesome about this given the circumstances :(
johnfelstead 07-15-2003 05:07 PM

Congratulations Jamie and Matt, you have worked very hard to achieve your first PGT win in Pro Rally, it's the first of many i believe.

Mark and Roger would have been very happy to see you take this win in your WRX.

Everyone involved in the sport this weekend had to deal with the most tragic of events and the whole rally comunity did so with great dignity and respect.

I am very proud of you Jamie!

Jamie,

Awesome job! Congratulations on your first win. Those "challenges" can be infuriating. Way to rise above it all and perform!

10th, we are all sad about the loss of Mark and Roger. But this is a very large accomplishment for Subie Gal racing and all of those that support the team. There was still a race that was run this weekend and they were fortunate enough to win it. It definitley warrants a positive press release. The last thing the team needs is your condesension while dealing with the loss of their fellow drivers.

Great job Jamie & Matt!!!

As for it being "unwholesome" because of the untimely deaths of fellow competitors I think that's 100% untrue. I believe that Mark and Roger would have wanted the rally to continue and the supporters of rallying to march on and make it a safer more enjoyable form of motorsport for everyone.

Congrats again to Jamie, Matt and the rest of the Subie Gal Racing team!!! Well done!!!

Your results are even more impressive due to the mental distractions added to the usual hardships and problems you deal with during the course of a rally.

Congratulations to you and your team.

and it was....

i have to admit i debated withdrawing saturday...
talked it over with my crew and friends...

I came to the conclusion that Mark and Roger wouldnt withdraw if the tables were turned, we're all out there because we love and are passionate about the sport...! I decided to continue on, and honor them as best as we all could... by being a supportive rally family....

i did not fare well nor did i drive well on Saturday.
god it was tough. on everyone.
literally had to wipe the tears from my eyes at every stage start...
stare down the timing clock - mind somewhere else.... death grip the steering wheel, and just try to focus on the task at hand once the clock counted down........

guys, it was the most awful rally i've seen.

I'm not sure what else to say. I'm going to miss my friends... and I still cannot believe they're gone...

thanks everyone for the kind words.

You go girl...Great work Jaime!

I'm glad you got the "bugs" worked out of Burnsie before the race. Way to pull through. :D Glad we got chat and hang out on Friday before the race...

It was hard for me to stay focused also. There was so much going on, so many thoughts going through my head, so much fatigue from all of that heat before we even hit the stages. On the first stage, we had a small "safari" excursion that we managed to pull out of. That brought it all home, how easy it can be to off, and how lucky we are to pull out of things like that. Sometimes not so lucky...:(

Mark and Roger will be missed by many. Our thoughts go out to all their families, friends, teammates, and everyone effected by this tragedy.

Keep your chin up and continue to Rally On...;)

Pghrally 07-16-2003 01:04 PM

While I understand why the rally continued, as rallying truly is a "press on regardless" sport, I agree this PR piece was put out prematurely. It's not even 1 week since the deaths of Lovell/Freeman. Their funerals have not even occured yet. Let us mourn the passing of two wonderful men without having to read this self gratifying post of a press release.
enTarget 07-16-2003 01:32 PM

YEAAAAAA
Congrats Jamie and Matt. Way to go on getting the notes worked out and for pulling the first Pro win.

No this isn't unwholesome, it helps with dealing with the grief.

Pghrally, If you knew Jamie as well as I do you would understand the pain she feels right now at the loss of two respected fellow competitors. Mark Lovell was more to Jamie than just a fellow competitor though, they shared a lot of fun times over the last 2 years and became friends.

For Jamie to be able to compete at all took great courage and support from her friends and fellow competitors. It would have been the wishes of Mark and Roger for this rally to continue and that was the decision the SCCA officials made on the day. Everyone who competed in the rally felt a great loss and did not celebrate their successes. I spoke with Jamie the day after the rally and although she had achieved one of her major goals, she felt empty about that, just like all her fellow competitors.

It took a great deal of contemplation to write a PR release, Jamie usually does this immediately after the events to inform her sponsors and supporters of the weekends events. This time was different and was not written immediately. Jamie wrote this with great respect to Mark and Roger and did the best she could under the circumstances. You should understand how hard it is to deal with the loss of fellow competitors and friends and be able to express those in a public way.

I am very proud of my friend for the way she is trying to cope with what is a tragic event in her life.
Pghrally 07-16-2003 02:08 PM

John, your response was very well thought out and well written, but I do not agree. It's inappropriate to issue any press release celebrating a victory so soon. You have obviously been a friend and supporter to Jamie for some time, and it's admirable to come to her defense. Maybe had the theme of the release dealt with the adversity of competing in an event after the loss of a friend I would feel differently, but it SEEMS in the PR that the biggest problem for the team in this event was learning stage notes. I wonder how this press release would go over at specialstage.com

well coming first of all from someone with 16 posts here...
i dont really care who you really are (hiding behind a user name) or what your opinion is. we all have them and you're well and good and entitled.

anyoneout there....... ss.com or otherwise can access my PR at any given time, as well as my personal tribute page to my friends as posted on our home team web page..... dont patronize me.

do you think it was easy to get in that car and rally this weekend?

do you think a pr should be about the dry heaves between stages?

do you think it should be about the tears that filled the car, the service area.. the thoughts of quitting/withdrawing and leaving the event?

do you think it was easy to come up with a pr?
**** i didnt even want to write one....

do you think it's going to be easy to write the 2 articles about my fallen friends that i've been asked to write?? (one of them due tomorrow.... and i havent even started yet....)

well  you certainly seem to think so...

Jamie
Pghrally 07-16-2003 02:40 PM

I didn't realize only posting a few times makes my opinion less credible.

If you didn't feel like writing a PR piece because of how you felt, then you have every right not to. Sponsors are human, they'd understand you are hurting, and not in the right frame of mind to do that. This has affected many people, Jamie. I think a PR piece was not appropriate, obviously others disagree. I am not going to post anymore on this, I even think it's wrong to debate this at this time.

Do your best, i am sure it will be a welcome contribution.
WRXinWhite 07-16-2003 03:45 PM

I don't understand the fuss. Jamie had the right to publish her PR piece regardless of the situation, as it sums up her achievements. Congratulations.
I believe in light of what happened we should support each other as much as we can and maybe leave some discussions regarding the taste for a little later.

Jamie, I hope you will repeat that win again soon.
10th Warrior 07-16-2003 03:55 PM
Jamie had the right to publish her PR piece regardless of the situation, as it sums up her achievements
no one said she didn't. she does of course. and those who find it appropriate have a right to say so, just as those who don't also do.
Pghrally 07-16-2003 03:56 PM

I'm breaking my own word here but...
Sorry for having offended anyone with my over-sensitive post. I guess I am in the minority that we should be mourning the loss of two competitors, not discussing our achievements. Whether that be here or another thread. Obviously, people mourn differently, and I was being overly-sensitive.

I have had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Mark Lovell, I never had the chance to meet Roger Freeman. I was always impressed by Mark, as a driver and as a person.

Congratulations on your 1st place finish Jamie.
Rallychic 07-16-2003 04:31 PM

Everyone has their own opinion, but I don't think now is the time to bicker about it. They wouldn't want us to do this now or later.

We all had a hard time continuing the Rally under the circumstances, but they wouldn't want us to quit. When Carl Merrill died, they proceeded with the rally...as that is what he would have wanted.

It was a tough rally mentally on all of us...please just let the dust settle a bit on this.

Jamie worked hard under the circumstances...I think we all did.

I agree with both of you on this. As you know, I think the dust should have settled before any PR was put out, and Jamie, had your quote been included in the Press Release, with that true, honest emotion, I would have read it much differently. That emotion was missing from your press release and since that's how you really feel, it should be in there. I was actually upset reading the press release because it seemed like the tragedy was such an afterthought. That is not how you feel, I know, but the release comes across that way. Maybe it was hard to find the proper words to describe how you felt as you wrote the release, but you conveyed it clearly now. I don't underestimate how you, and everyone in the rally community feels right now, myself included. And I am not picking at you now, I really believe you should include your sentiments in your Press Release.

didnt convey myself properly...

not quite myself, for that i apologize.
rupertberr 07-16-2003 05:26 PM

When you have a race team with sponsors you are required to write a press release after each event if not after every day of the event. I was wondering what was taking so long but could imagine. Fans wonder too because they worry about their favorite drivers, especially after what happened in Oregon. This is the best way to let them know how you have done. We are all proud of Jamie under the worst of circumstances.
WRSport 07-16-2003 06:02 PM

Serious congrats on the win.

Take care of yourself Jaime.
ANZAC_1915 07-16-2003 06:31 PM

I thought it was a classy release with appropriate respect for Mark and Roger.
ripvw 07-16-2003 06:34 PM

Dear Jamie:

When I saw your name on the post in the Motorsports Forum, I immediately clicked on it. The first thing I saw was the image of the side of your wagon with the obviously handmade sign with Mark and Roger's names and their number 4. It brought tears to my eyes to see it.

Your first "statement" was visual, and it was a tribute to lost friends and fellow racers, not a picture of you and Matt up on the podium spraying champagne. That's how I saw - and felt - it, and I have trouble understanding how anyone else could see it differently.

It is Wednesday, and we lost them on Saturday. How long were we - your fans and supporters - supposed to wait to hear about "our team"? The timing was right.

You and Matt chose to press on and continue the race - and won! Congratulations for having the courage to continue at all, and congratulations again for managing to win under such incredible emotional stress. We fans had the luxury to "tune out" the rest of the rally on Saturday and focus on our grief and the news about the crash. But you and Matt had to endure the grief and still compete. That is exactly what Mark and Roger would have wanted you to do, and I know that they are proud of your team and your accomplishments, but mostly they are proud because you kept going.

You ended your message like it began, with a tribute to Mark and Roger, this time vebal. You started and ended your message by reminding us of our loss and in the middle you shared with us the good news of our team's accomplishments. That's what we needed to hear and that's the way we needed to hear it. Thank you.

I am proud to be a Subie Gal Racing supporter, and I am very proud of this win. I am also proud of how you have presented yourself and your team in this most trying of times. What you and Matt did was life affirming, and in a time of grief that is exactly what the rest of us need to witness.

You take care, darlin'.

Uhm, I think I understand your point Mr. Felstead, however if you would just clarify for me that you're not necessarily implying that I'm somehow being disrespectful to Mark & Roger, I personally would find it helpful. It's difficult to gauge sometimes in an impersonal medium such as the Internet whether or not someone intends offense or just accidentally implies it.

Cheers,

johnfelstead 07-16-2003 07:11 PM

Hi Doug, sincere apologies for my post being even possibly read as negative towards you, that wasnt the intent at all.

I was trying to show how different people explain how the weekend events were for them and that you should look at the big picture. It was aimed at Pghrally and the opinions he was expressing.

I know of your involvement with Pro Rally and know how you are a passionate and genuine competitor and are very respectful of Mark and Roger, there was no intent to say otherwise. I didnt think through my words properly.

Cheers
John
Pghrally 07-16-2003 07:27 PM

John- thank you for "aiming" comments at me...
is it really that hard to understand that I personally felt it was too soon for any PR other than sympathy given the weekends events? That is how I feel...I've explained that already; I was actually upset when reading the PR piece at the beginning of this thread. I'm sorry if I offended you or other supporters of Jamie by not agreeing with that.

Mitsubishi won the event... here's their release:

johnfelstead 07-16-2003 07:39 PM

Pghrally, read my response to Doug, it is aimed at explaining what i wrote and when it was written. It was before your last post on the matter, a post you made partly in response to me asking you to read dougs thread. It's as simple as that. There is nothing more to it. I am sorry that you read it diferently.
outback2.5HO 07-16-2003 07:59 PM

Ok guys,

With all of that being said, let's let the negativity be done with...:)
Water under the bridge...;)
dch 07-16-2003 08:25 PM

Thank you for the clarification, John. I think perhaps we're all still a bit too involved with the whole affair so as to be a bit on edge. Everyone will deal with things in their own way, and people will have varying opinions on what someone should and should not do- that's just part of the variety of life. I think the important thing is we'll all miss our fellow competitors and there isn't one of us that would do anything that we really believed would be disrespectful to them or their families and friends.

Regards,
-Doug
Pghrally 07-16-2003 08:53 PM

DCH- Agreed. The bottom line is that no one wants to see anything disrespectful said or done. I think we all agree on that, and that our emotions are particluarly high right now. I am happy to put this to rest- I believe that if we were in a room together, we'd all be on the same page.

John and Jamie- best of luck to you both.

We will all miss Mark and Roger....
ITWRX4ME 07-17-2003 09:38 AM

Jamie, well done on all fronts! There's no shame in persevering. Consider this a virtual handshake and pat on the back.
