PR: Subie Gal Racing Encounters Bumpy Ride
For Immediate Release March 2-3rd

Hoquiam/Montesano, WA- The Subie Gal Racing team, after a successful debut of the Rally Wagon at part 1 & 2 of the Doo Wops SCCA Club Rally Series, ran into some complications over the weekend at Doo Wops 3 & 4 and were unable to score any significant points for the weekends efforts. Day one, the team was plagued by mechanical failures and day two the team met with their first DNF.

From the very start of Doo Wops 3 the team encountered frustration when mechanical gremlins seemed to plague Burnsie The Rally Wagon. Special Stage 1, approximately one mile in, the car simply died end result was the intercooler hose had dislodged from the turbo. Although the team was able to get it going again, nearly the full 30 minutes had been lost, and as the team was listed as 2nd car on the road - basically the day was done. The rest of the days stages would be for fun or would they? Special Stage 2 the wagon was not boosting correctly, the diagnosis was that the air-flow sensor had become disconnected and the car was in limp mode, unable to perform. After a service and a thorough check, the team took on Special Stage 3, (of 5) and were beginning to move a bit quicker until the stage end when the EGT (exhaust temperature) sensor dislodged and once again, the car went into limp mode and was unable to boost. Stages 4 and 5 were completed without further complications and the team finished the day gathering only start and finish points

I was very, very frustrated but what can you do? stated Subie Gal Racing team driver, Jamie Thomas, This is a new car, and weve got some learning to do now we know what needs to be double checked before we hit the stages.

Sundays running of Doo Wops 4 was wet, rainy and for a lack of a better term, mucky. The team ran the first two stages quickly but safely and without incident, finding themselves sitting in 7th position overall when, on special stage 3, Jamie and the team encountered their first major off. On the near infamous Brooklyn Tavern Stage, about 4 corners in, the rally wagon left the road after a sharp triple-caution right-hand turn and went down a near vertical bank. Luckily for the team, the car had spun nearly all the way around, left the road back-end first and lodged itself onto a series of small trees. Those small trees were all that was keeping the car from a serious vertical drop. The team was shaken, but unhurt. Organizers were unable to retrieve the car until the end of the days stages when a team of 5 large sweep vehicles worked in conjunction to get the wagon from its cliffs edge perch.

Im disappointed of course! I need to learn the car, but Id rather it not be the hard way. stated Jamie, The conditions were very, very wet, and a LOT slicker than I realized. I was simply too fast into that turn and never had a chance to recover. Im extremely lucky we ended up where we did and I owe the sweep crew so much for getting the car out of that position without a scratch.

Its a new team, a new car, and theres a lot of learning to do, commented Tyler Washburn, Subie Gal Racings new Co-driver, Jamie was getting quicker and seemed to have a grip on the car, just overshot the wrong corner. There will be other rallies and well be back for more.

Wow! The car looks like it's hanging on for dear life.
ChrisW 03-03-2003 09:47 AM

that sucks...

Sounds like you had a day like mine. I went autox'ing yesterday, fell behind, got frustrated, pushed too hard....

At least no one was hurt.

How bad is Bunsie?
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 10:53 AM

Burnsie is actually fine...
not a scratch if you can believe it

power of the car can be a bit deceptive...
i was just a tick too fast into that corner...
had it been dry, i'd have been fine - but i failed to judge the road conditions properly...

we're all okay so we'll be out to tackle em another day... soon!

:)
scottm1978 03-03-2003 11:18 AM

So how big of drop would that have been not for the trees catching you?
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 11:22 AM

i'd rather not think about it :)

there were a few 6-7" diameter trees about 10 feet further down
but i'm not sure they would have held the car...

at that angle it's very likely the car would have then rolled
backwards and continued on down....

a long long ways...

but that didnt happen... my guardian angels worked overtime yesterday... and i thank them ;)

really?!?! I gotta see some pics.....:p Puts a new meaning to pine trees being a "soft wood" I guess

I know what you mean about the power of the car. IMHO, sounds like you got caught out by the conditions and hitting the boost too early in the corner.
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 11:24 AM

i came charging into the corner just too damn fast... yes...
and when i tried to power out of the situation i was in...

no grip.

that was it.

it was over pretty quick...

i'll get y'all some after pix today...

Burnsie is lookin a lot better than he did yesterday afternoon lying there.... i never thought i'd have to climb UP the car to get to safety.... pretty amazing...

Jamie, you weren't kidding when I talked to you Friday that you were worried about the rain. Glad to hear that you (and Burnsie of course) are A-OK.
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 11:41 AM

true...rain turns the stages into slush....
that wasnt an issue much in the P car as it couldnt power through it...

bit different w/Burnsie here...
he's a monster :)

we'll get to know each other a bit better... and we will see success again... :)

those people are nuts.
i was posting and swapping times with the top cars...

car is PLENTY fast.. even with my limited experience
and the restrictor fitted on the turbo....

i didnt read the road conditions...
and i didnt respect the triple caution...

i will now!

very happy that I was being watched over....

driggity 03-03-2003 01:19 PM

Those pictures almost do justice to how steep it was. I couldn't believe that the car came out of their without being banged up.
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 01:26 PM

I didnt believe it either Drakos....

crazy scary....
outback2.5HO 03-03-2003 05:25 PM

Jaime,

Glad that you and your navvie are OK (and Bursie too).:D That was one helluva a nasty spot to off, that turn was so slick, as were most of the stages yesterday. What a long way down....

We almost had one in the first spectator stage on Pico, got me in check real quick... Came in hot, tapped the brakes and the car just kept going until we pitched it and barely saved it.

Overall, we had our best race yet, 3rd in PGT Doo Wops 3, 2nd in PGT Doo Wops 4, 2nd PGT overall, 11th place overall. Not bad for an old Legacy 2.2...

Guess it goes back to the Tortoise and the Hare...We just tried to stay steady and finish, not break any records (or the car).;) Still got a ways to go to keep up with you and Trinder...

Take it Easy,

B---
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 05:28 PM

you guys did great!

steady and at your pace is the way to go!
that's all i could do last year...

now i'm up a notch... and u know?

i'm not even sure what my 'pace' is :D hehehee

i'll get it figured out.... when i do... ;) look out boyz....

Hey, a serious question... Who writes these press releases? Seriously.
yeah D it sucks.. but i learned a lot... i'll get it sorted...

PR's... come on.. u all know I write them....
I dont have the $ to hire a PR person just yet... :(

sooooo do they totally suck or what? :p
Subie Gal 03-03-2003 05:54 PM

 have fun :)
MGXsport 03-03-2003 07:33 PM

Ouch that doesn't look like too much fun.
mlambert 03-03-2003 11:36 PM

just a quick tip for dislodged intercooler hoses - pull the plug to the maf sensor. This will get you moving again in limp mode and you can drive to a safe spot to fix the hoses. Learned this trick this weekend at PIR for a track day :D
TFW 03-03-2003 11:47 PM

The MAF sensor had no trouble coming off on its own 1 stage later... (AFTER we fixed the intercooler hose...)

sigh.

WRX's are have plenty of power to get you in trouble. hell, a civic can get you into trouble if the conditions are not in your favor. glad to see that you and the car are fine. rolling it after putting so much energy into the project would've been such a bummer.

i'm still gonna make my car faster
outback2.5HO 03-04-2003 01:46 AM

Thanks for the kind words.:)

You've helped us out in the past, and we appreciate it, as well as many other people in the sport. ;)

Rallying is just the most fun you can have in car (imo) with some of the best, nicest, people in motorsports...

We'll be sticking around awhile if we can find sponsors (even if not)...:D
It's hard to get to all of the events (and fix the car) paying out-of-pocket:(

Already thinking of a faster car, but "The Beast" has all of the bugs worked out for now. Still just like to finish races...:)

BTW, we're always looking out for you and Burnsie on the loose...;)
GarySheehan 03-04-2003 01:48 AM

Jamie,

Welcome to the world of racing the WRX. All of your mechanical issues have happened to us in the past. Of course, ours were distributed across 2 racing seasons where it seems all of yours hit at once. Just add them to your checklist and keep going.

Good luck!

Just remember, even the most talented and experienced WRC drivers have made mistakes. :p

I'm just glad no one was hurt and "Burnsie" is okay. Good luck on the next rally.

I think if I went over a drop like that the first place I'd be visiting is the dry cleaners to get my race suit cleaned.

Good to see you guys and the car are in one piece.
AndyRoo 03-04-2003 10:33 PM

Whoa  Looks like you could drive by without seeing the car!

Glad to hear you're okay!

That was the car's way of saying, "Respect me, I am fast." And I thought I've had moments. Happy to hear no one got hurt in your experience.

...and the PR releases are first rate!
