Prodrive Lights on WR Blue part 1

Prodrive Lights on WR Blue

Well, installed them tonight, had an issue with the wiring, but having some sort of electronics background  i managed to fabricate my own connector, they work great, except for the lever motor. I think this is for the UK lights to dip, i am going to try to wire it myself to a switch in the car, we'll see.

By the way, pics will follow in the morning, they look great :D

Also, i think these are HID low beams, considering I have'nt seen this type of bulb before, and Jeez are they bright!!!! Uhmm, the only other thing i can think to tell you is the lights are by Hella! And they look expensive to replace.
gtguy 12-04-2001 09:59 AM

The Prodrive lights aren't HID, unless the purchaser got the HID conversion kit, which is available from Prodrive. Indeed, the Hella bulbs are stock. Oh, the low beam is an H4, which I believe does have more mojo than the 9007. The projector lens helps, too.

Hey, if there's a stock car around, can you get a pic of the two cars side by side, and the beam pattern/brightness?

Thanks,

Kevin

???

I need some more info. about the prodrive headlight.... 'cos I heard the STI HID one will lose the highbeam....

1- Do I have to give up the highbeam if install the prodrive one?
2- does it come with HID and how much is it?
3- I would like to see the installation instruction..

thanks a lot

Ed

You know, I got these directly from Prodrive, and I paid just a little more (about $900) than you can getthem for here, and the main bulb looks distictly like the STi HID lights!

And Ed, I got an installation guide from Prodrive, but as the harnesses are different I would have to write up my own, another thing I will get around to eventually. I definatly have both High and low beams, so there shouldn't be a problem there. And yes, we do have a couple of stock lighted WRX's around here so I'll eventually get the beam comparisons. I am at the dealership having the power steering fixed on my car, but as soon as I get home I will post the pictures of them.

shrieden 12-04-2001 05:08 PM

And wow, do they attract attention, i have have people blatantly staring, come up and ask about them, it is great, I am wayyy happy with them :D
dwx 12-04-2001 09:13 PM

I think I may just have to spring for a pair of those... or maybe find out where you live. I definitely want some black replacements and I don't like the morettes.
yzfrone 12-05-2001 01:05 AM

what brakes do you have?
monsters man...
lenyx 12-05-2001 09:33 AM

ehh.. not too keen on the black headlights... most people think the car looks bug eyed to begin with, now it just looks like it has two big black eyes. Poor car.. black and blue :p

But I'm glad that you're happy with them. :D

Technical questions

I have a few very specific questions about the ProDrive headlight units which I don't recall in any of the posts (historical or recent).

1) Does the ProDrive lights bolt up to the car without modifications to either the lights or the car?

2) What bulb is used for the main (high) beam?

3) What bulb is used for the dipped (low) beam?

4) The US OEM unit has parking and turn signal bulbs. It appears that the ProDrive unit has a turn signal bulb in the center top position. Is there any parking light?

5) The US OEM unit has multiple connectors (i.e. 9007 bulb connector, etc). From comments above the ProDrive unit has a motor to adjust the dipped beam's position. What is the electrical interface to the ProDrive unit's lights (i.e. is it possible to find mating connectors for the car side of the interface)?

TIA

"4) The US OEM unit has parking and turn signal bulbs. It appears that the ProDrive unit has a turn signal bulb in the center top position. Is there any parking light? "

Yes, actually the light that is on in the picture is the parking light, and the parking light works as normal with the turn signal, ie does come on when actually using the turn signal, but come on for just parking lights and when you arm and disarm the alarm.

"5) The US OEM unit has multiple connectors (i.e. 9007 bulb connector, etc). From comments above the ProDrive unit has a motor to adjust the dipped beam's position. Uhmm, the 9007 bulb connector is for the standard light, and didnt fit the connector for the Prodrives, so that is where the custom fabrication came in ;). In UK cars they have a little switch in the car which allows them to dip the headlights, now there is no connector in the US car that I know of, and if there is, please, someone tell me about it, so if you want to be able to dip the headlights from inside the car, you will need to wire a switch up yourself.

yzfrone, those are the Prodrive/Alcon 4 piston calipers with Alcon 330mm Disks.

I have yet to come across anyone who has disliked them, it is the same deal when the car came out, they look sooooo much better in person :p

Where do you get these lights, and how much are they?
thanks
Haj
shrieden 12-05-2001 01:50 PM

Uhmm, I got them actually from Prodrive via a Rochdale dealer (ie, I picked them up when i was in the UK) and they cost 510 GBP without VAT (which is 17.5%) I am not sure where you get them here in the US, but the advantage to these are they are definatly not replicas ;)

Dipped beam adjustment

My old car had Veleo lights that included dipped beam adjusting motors. Basically the motor received +12 and ground, along with a control signal from the switch in the car.

The switch in turn received +12 / ground and generated the control signal which was nothing more than a independent voltages for each switch / beam setting. Internal to the switch was a string of resistors hooked between the +12 and ground. The switch tapped off of intermediate points in the resistor string. It appears that the motor moves to a point proportional to the control voltage.

I'm going to guess that most of these systems work the same.

----

Did the parking / turn signal lights mate up to the car's harness connector? I can see where the 9007 connector is US unique.....
dwx 12-05-2001 02:01 PM

You can get them from Tirerack for $739, they are the US distributor for Prodrive products in the US, so they are the real thing. There is a guy in private classifieds, rallybird, who is trying to get a group buy together to get some for $530 shipped, but I'm still unsure whether those are the real things or not. Another guy has been selling them on ebay for about $500US+$60 shipping from the UK.

shrieden 12-05-2001 02:58 PM

The turn signal/ parking light connect was just fine, no issuse there, it was just the 9007 connecter needed to have wires run to the UK connectors, whatever they are
shrieden 12-05-2001 03:01 PM

Ok, working out the amount i paid with the exchange rate when i bought them ($1.49 to the pund) it comes out too $760. But i didn't have to wait for them to be delivered, and i didn't pay tax on them, and i didn't pay for shipping :D So overall I think I got a slightly better deal than tirerack offers :D
shrieden 12-05-2001 03:05 PM

The even better thing is, these were an early christmas present from my mom, so I didn't pay anything :D :p
bemani 12-05-2001 03:18 PM

shrieden:

I'd be very interested in seeing how you make your own connectors - right now the only the that is keeping me from buying a set is that I don't want to cut any wires in my car. Can you post some pics/directions? much appreciated ;)
dwx 12-05-2001 03:19 PM

Yeah I don't think tirerack keeps them in stock at all so you are probably looking at 3-4 week shipping time for them.
shrieden 12-05-2001 03:46 PM

Corner :D. I didnt cut any connecters, just did a fine job of soldering some wires from one connector to the other, and then a ton of electrical tape to make sure no water can get to it :D But I cant show you know, because it is already been done, and i really dont want to redo the taping, but there is no need for Any wires in your car to be cut.
bemani 12-05-2001 06:04 PM

Hmm ... what I was looking for is to build something that can plug into the car's wiring and the uk300 headlight, so that if I need to, I can just unplug it. Or, at worse, only solder on the headlight side, and do no soldering on the car side. I'm so freakin nice to my car ... I don't even have a spoiler because I don't want to drill holes in my trunk :p
Goste 12-05-2001 07:34 PM

Hey, Shrieden,
Those lights look sweeeeeet!!
Look better on the car, than in the box :D
and, jeez! those brakes seem bigger in the pics! W0w!

That car needs a new hood!

Simon Lines 12-10-2001 10:08 AM

Hi Guys
I had a good look at the US wiring when i was over, we are working on a loom to enable PnP.
The UK lights use a small motor (with an internal switch) to allow remote hight adjustment, not fitted to US cars.
Your lights seem less bright than UK / Euro ones, we have two types to fit to the conversion, EU and SAE, i don't know if there is a brightness difference
Cheers
Simon
gtguy 12-10-2001 11:04 AM

WTG, Simon! That's what I like to hear. I was wondering if all of our pleas for a plug-n-play harness were being heeded. :D

Kevin
bemani 12-10-2001 11:11 AM

Yes! No wire cutting :)
Now I'd buy a set if Prodrive doesn't jack up the price.
dwx 12-10-2001 01:04 PM

I think alot of us might just be interested in the harnesses, but I can understand just selling them with the headlights.
shrieden 12-10-2001 06:18 PM

But i didnt cut any wires, just made a sort of extension :p I want to know more about this harness though, it might be quite useful ;)
IMI 12-17-2001 06:01 AM

Those lights are sweet!!

My friend recently put HID's in his car and I always felt that the stock WRX lights were on the weak side. I am kinda torn as to get the uk300 lights or the JDM STi ones. Anyhow, just wanted to leave my praise here. See ya around maybe :)
shrieden 12-17-2001 05:06 PM

Thank you for the compliment :) We have meets all the time up here, the main one being at the Mongolian Grill in Bothell every Wednesday, however, I am not sure the next time I will be able to make it, what with work and everything, but I try ;)
christoph1371 12-17-2001 06:52 PM

I have the same lights on my Yellow wrx (BAIC FORUM). Yes Hella makes them for prodrive. There are knockoffs EXACTLY like prodrive , just no sticker that says prodrive. EVERYTHING else is the same.
