Same here :D

There are other products that the members use on here, although most will agree with SG. Try a search for "Engine Cleaning" or something to that extent. I personally use SG and it's GREAT

this stuff can get ANYTHING out / off of ANYTHING. seriously.

if something is really bad, dont dilute it... just spray it straight on. when i clean my wheels this is what i do. i dont even have to worry about scrubbing or anything. all the brake dust and stuff just comes off when the simple green flows off the wheel. the stuff is amazing.

do you have a polished finish on your wheels? I'd be a little afraid to try it on my SSR Professors.
andrewanderson 07-26-2005 06:14 PM

Vote three for Simple Green.
VoltesV 07-26-2005 06:17 PM

Vote four for simple green. it's really good.
just make sure that the engine is cold, to avoid cracking something.

I use it on my BBS's and it doesn't harm anything
jlyttle 07-26-2005 07:54 PM

I take my car to one of the self-wash bays. Most have an engine cleaner, soak everything and then hit it with the high-pressure rinse. Works great! I never have to cover/protect anything, just clean it and drive away. Try not to get any on your paint though. I did once, sprayed it off, no harm done.
Phy6 07-26-2005 07:58 PM

Vote 5 for simple green. Works great on fluid caps along with an old toothbrush.
Driftart 07-26-2005 09:15 PM

Simple Green works great :)

I'm a bit weary spraying down my engine with water, I'm afraid I might short something out.

Since everyone is agreeing with SG, I'll steal some from the janitor's closet at the office and start experimenting. Thanks guys!

hell, I spray my engine compartment down all the time, just not with a concentrated blast

the engine bay does get wet when you drive in the rain

I'm a little scared to ask but why how do you know it will remove human fat from your engine compartment? Just a tip to help keep that from happening again. You are supposed to turn on the engien and let it cool before you start working on it.

WRXedUSA 07-27-2005 09:28 AM

For a clean and detail, I like that CD2 stuff that is basically a can of Engine Brite and Tire Foam.
JOHNYB420 07-27-2005 11:54 AM

ZEP brake cleaner, it will take off any crap produced by your engine with out scrubbing or washing. plus its self drying
taylor04 07-27-2005 12:37 PM

Don't forget to wipe down all your rubber hoses w/ 303 or some RuGlide after the cleaning! Keep everything all nice and pretty.

TeamDeezNutz 07-27-2005 05:20 PM
What is 303 or RuGlide?
what he said????? i wanna make my hoses look brand new too...
taylor04 07-29-2005 01:05 PM

303 Aerospace Protectant. The best (imo and many others) interior/exterior dressing spray.

http://www.303products.com/main.php?infopage=protectant

Can be found locally in many marinas as it's a well known cleaner for boaters as well.

RuGlide, which I have only seen for sale at NAPA, is the liquid used on new tires before they mount the rubber on the actual rim. Works great as a proctectant for hoses. I use it to treat the rubber CV joints/boots when I rotate my tires. Prevents them from drying out and cracking.
menash23 07-29-2005 10:24 PM

The green stuff works for me, at the engine bay that is.
animes2k 07-30-2005 12:53 AM

Castrol All Purpose Cleaner in the purple bottle.
THIS is some serious stuff.

On this engine detail, I had to dry out the distributor cap
Used 303 to dress the hoses and some Autosol metal polish on the manifold cover, Klasse AIO (All In One) on the underhood paint and plastic.
thats amazing!
thanks. that was a beast of an engine (the whole car, really [linky]). 10 years old, never cleaned engine compartment...

I like 303 for lots of stuff - tires (nice NATURAL sheen, not some super-glossy solvent-based-eat-your-tires dressing), trim, rubber seals, interior hard vinyl (dash, door panels, NOT rubber floor mats :D ), my convertible top... It's great stuff.

It really brought my 5 year old never-treated dash back to life (in the S) and really revitalized the convertible top (it's vinyl). Pretty impressive stuff. I like. Highly recommended.
Stewthebassman 07-30-2005 04:42 PM

I like Citrus degreaser and a cloth.
svek 07-30-2005 05:12 PM

we have this stuff at work called "holy cow" and there is this moronic cow on the front. and yah it works pretty good
civilone 07-31-2005 02:18 AM

I just wonder, would windex work? I have heard of using windex.

Being a glass cleaner, I'm sure it has ammonia in it. That may lead to some discoloration of the hoses. Besides, you don't want a streaky engine bay haha.

The Castrol line of products are seriously tough.

The Castrol line of Super Clean products work awesome too. I was washing the car and hadn't cleaned my engine bay in honestly a year or so. Since I had recently done an intake and red hoses I figured I would try to clean it up. I didn't have anything with me except this Castrol All Wheel Cleaner with me. It had a nice foaming action that really cleaned the wheels so I figured I would try it under the engine bay. I covered the main electrical items and air filter and sprayed it all around. Let it sit for like 3 minutes or so not allowing it to dry up anywhere and rinsed it off. Worked like a champ, no rubbing, medium water pressure and nothing was left behind. I think it's the same as the Castrol Super Clean formula just renamed.
