Race of Champions this weekend: Discuss!
Here's the team line-ups:

Germany: Michael Schumacher/Armin Schwarz
France: Jean Alesi/Sebastien Loeb
USA: Jeff Gordon/Jimmie Johnson
GB: David Coulthard/Colin McRae
Sweden: Kenny Brack/Mattias Ekstrom
Finland: Heikki Kovalainen/Marcus Gronholm
Brazil: Felipe Massa/Tony Kanaan
Team France II: Sebastien Bourdais/Stephane Sarrazin

The cars:
Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge
ROC buggy cars
Citroen Xsara WRC
Peugeot 307 WRC

SPEED Channel will show all of the action in a 90-minute special to air on Dec. 12 (followed by a behind-the-ROC-scenes with some NASCAR driver

Just for *****s and giggles, I'd like to see Schumacher duke it out with either McRae, Loeb or Gordon. I'm hoping Schuey will get spanked so badly that, just to redeem himself, he'll decide to race rally full-time.

Team Solberg/Schumacher for 2006!
grandpa rex 12-03-2004 01:25 PM

Here's a link to the official website in France: http://www.imp.mc/rocwebsite/index.htm

I believe that Speed will be televising beginning on December 12 at 8PM.

Here are my picks:

1. Alesi/Loeb - homers get the W
2. Schumi/Schwarz
3. Gordon/Johnson
4. DC/McRae
5. Bourdais/Sarrazen
6. Massa/Kannan
7. Kovalainen/Gronholm
8. Brack/Eckstrom

I've always liked this when I've stumbled across it on Speed. I'm really looking forward to this year's event. Must be my race-watching jones.
ANZAC_1915 12-03-2004 01:31 PM

BTW the ROC is organized by none other than Michelle Mouton. :)
MattDell 12-03-2004 01:38 PM

Somebody needs to remind me to watch this on December 12.

Matt, don't forget, the 12th!! :D

Team Solberg/Schumacher for 2006!
   imagine that.

I like Coulthard/McRae for this event...purely a hunch.
Gravelstar 12-03-2004 01:56 PM

Bummer that it's on pavement exclusivly. My guess is that it was a condition for Shumacher's participation. He's made comments in the past about not wanting to race on dirt. Wuss.
BriDrive 12-03-2004 02:01 PM

Jeff Gordan has pulled out due to "illness" and will be replaced by Casey Mears.

I've been a fan of the ROC for the last few yars, and this is by far the coolest tidbit of info I didn't know about.

Gordon/Johnson would have been OK, but Johnson/Mears? I think R. Gordon/Jonson would have been a better combination. IMO, if you're going to go with NASCAR guys, I don't see how you could leave Tony Stewart out of this.
pio!pio! 12-03-2004 03:24 PM

CASEY MEARS? ugh...Colin Edwards plz!
heffergm 12-03-2004 03:46 PM

I refuse to believe that Johnson and Mears are the best the US has to offer. Highest profile maybe...
Kitsune 12-03-2004 05:51 PM

A lot of it I'm sure has to do with who actually wants to participate and has the time, plus are not restricted by any binding contracts.
chairmandave 12-03-2004 07:03 PM

racing-live.com already has some pictures up. Interestingly, they show pictures of the Ferrari 360 racing against the Rally buggy and the Pug.
MarkA 12-03-2004 07:54 PM

Here are the first round matchups:

Formula 1 superstar Michael Schumacher will go head-to-head with fellow Grand Prix racer Felipe Massa , while Loeb has been drawn against another Brazilian, 2004 Indy Racing League Champion Tony Kanaan . The other heats are Kenny Brack (S) v Sbastien Bourdais (F), David Coulthard (GB) v Heikki Kovalainen (FIN), Jean Alesi (F) v Casey Mears (USA), Marcus Grnholm (FIN) v Stphane Sarrazin (F), Armin Schwarz (D) v Jimmie Johnson (USA) and Mattias Ekstrom (S) v Colin McRae (GB).

i can. all he would do is find a way to run into and spin whoever hes racing and then bitch about it. why is it the US is stuck picking from nascar?

So how about you post some updates and color commentary for us while you are watching it live? :)

I think crash.net radio will have some updates too.
Kitsune 12-04-2004 02:21 PM

Schumacher vs Massa? And Schumacher gets to drive a Ferrari on pavement.

Wow, never seen that one before.

Not all counties are being represented fairly. U.S. doesn't get Gordon, who is arguably the best road course driver in the U.S. Finland doesn't get Raikkonen or Hakkinen, either of which who would fly when the car is actually up to snuff. That's life though...

Regardless, it will be interesting to see:)

Did you watch a different race? He didn't.
jcroy66 12-05-2004 09:25 AM
Did you watch a different race? He didn't.
Actually, by raw time, he did lose. He advanced because of a 10-second penalty that was assessed against Massa for hitting the wall.
caryfd227 12-05-2004 09:59 AM
Did you watch a different race? He didn't.
Uhhh, yes he did "LOSE" Kindof lame they instituted a penalty for hitting the wall. In real racing hitting the wall doesn't add a penalty
caryfd227 12-05-2004 10:00 AM

but, yes your right he did advance to the next round... that doesn't mean he won
bal00 12-05-2004 10:51 AM

In real racing it would be equivalent to leaving the track and losing time or if there really is a wall, smashing your car to pieces cause the speeds are much higher. They obviously didn't want the drivers to use the walls to steer.
finnRex 12-05-2004 02:17 PM

People are out there to keep the Finn's down  You know what I mean though. I think it'd be cool to see the best of what every country has to offer. Same thing happens in olympics too(hockey comes to mind). Scheduling conflict with the NHL season...which there is none so far this year.
