Racing shoes? need help part 1

skuttledude 11-08-2005 10:20 AM

Racing shoes? what should I get..Santa is coming
Santa is getting me some racing shoes...I need help on which ones to get!!

I'll be using them every month for AutoX (need to run around in them) and also track events. And later for some karting practice.

Should they be the medium or high ankle style? Would the high style (ankle wrap) making running around difficult?

Sparco, OMP, MOMO, Puma, Piloti, other?

Price is important but I also believe in very good quality and this is not something that I want to replace every year.

Please let me know which ones you use, or would like, and please give ideas on the styles that are advantageous.

Thanks!!!

Alpinestars, baby! If you're a 9.5, you should PM me.
fliz 11-08-2005 10:30 AM

I've got Simpson shoes, medium that won't wrap around a firesuit. With the thin soles and no grip, they're not good for running around in.

For autox, I put them on to race, then take them off when I have to work.

PUMA SPEEED CAT
really lightweight, not flameproof

check out Sparco Speedway shoes.

FIA approved, med height, nice sticky sole that's decent for walking and awesome for pedal dancing.

moderate price, under $150 from several Sparco dealers on net.

these are the Real Deal, super sexay Italian leather. softest suede I've seen. make you drive like Makinen....

My god they're comfortable. Definitely put your regular shoes back on before you go work unless you have tough feet: they're almost like going barefoot.

If you want to save $$, you can get wrestling shoes or indoor soccer shoes...
IBAUCLAPlaya 11-08-2005 11:16 PM

Ditto to wrestling...

I like the alpine stars, ive personally used simpson , piloti , alpine star, even nike racing shoe. Piloti are mostly like every day shoes , simpson are a little uncomfortable , the nike are nice but the alpinestar rock.
Btw ive its only autoX some puma speed catz for like 65 dollars should do the trick.
GarySheehan 11-09-2005 01:29 AM

Racing shoes are great for driving in and crappy for walking/running in.

Change into sneakers once you get out of the car so you can run around picking up cones or work grid or T&S. You're going to have them with you anyway, because you're not driving to the autocross in your racing shoes, right? You're not walking into the 7-Eleven in your racing shoes on your way to the autocross, right?!

Davis, let me know I can do some special things on Alpine Stars. And yes for anyone who wears a 10.5 US size, I have 1 left from early 05.

Alpine Stars, is the ONLY way to go. I have had Sparco, and Stand and others, but the Alpine's you dont find your self dying to get out of after a session. I was driving home from XPLEX karting in Vegas before I realized I had them on..lol.

On the other spectrum , Piloti's new race shoe is VERY NICE. They are going to provide our crew the shoes for the new LMP program and we are HAPPY. Several ALMS GTS drivers are using those in the Vettes and loving it. The floor on the Vette's get very hot.

Dave let me know.

From what I understand if you want a driving shoe for only driving get high tops and if you want to walk around get low tops. AS far as brands I like Pumas, Sparco, and My adidas low tops are great, but brand choice is up to you. Just make sure you don't spend extra money on the flame-retardent ones if thats not what you need (there a lot more expensive). Figure out what you want then Google and Froogle it to find some cheap ones on sale.
WRX 2002 11-09-2005 03:26 AM

My understanding for karting they require high tops that go around the ankle, at least they did in Australia.

I got these in suade and i really like them a lot. You can definately run around in them if need be and they look pretty sweet also :P I really bought these for just spirited mountian road drives not for racing. Im sure they would work though.
TarmacRally 11-09-2005 05:03 AM

If you were just to be doing autocrossing I would recommend some Piloti's. The fit nice and snug but they have enough sole to walk around in them all day.

I probably will change into sneakers for the run-around stuff.

Gary, what shoes do you like? What have you tried and what last a long time.?
Jack 11-09-2005 09:39 AM

Whatever shoes you get, walk into the shop and try them on! I'm lucky enough to have HMS Motorsport nearby. I go in and walk around in shoes while wearing a new Helmet. I leave with an empty wallet and the knowledge that all the stuff fits. I can't remember the brand of shoes I got, but may be ProForce. High tops with nice double velcro straps on the top that not only tighten around the ankle but hold the laces so that I absolutely know that during a long run session on the track, I won't look down and have untied shoes.

I'm a firm believer in trying stuff on before I get it..especially helmets. But I'll have to drive maybe 2.5 hrs to get to a place that MIGHT carry a couple brands of racing shoes. Very limited.

My Simpson high tops lasted forever. Still had them after 12 years. I lost one and had to replace them.

I really liked the original No-Fear shoe. Most comfortable I've worn. Great durability as well.

I'm currently wearing Sparco high tops. A little discomfort on my Achilles if I wrap the velcro too tight, but otherwise OK.

I just picked up a pair of these over the weekend in cloth. Very nice shoes and pretty good for the price $74.99. Not that great for running around in though, you'll definately want to wear normal sneakers when working an autocross course.

I have these too they also sell a nylon version which gets better flex, but I opted for the leather since I use them when Im not driving too and they feel great in the car, not so great for walking, but bearable.
bxracer69 11-10-2005 02:38 AM

I have a set of puma speedcats for driving around. Somehow they turned into my everday sneakers, (bad choice). Not good for running in at all, awesome for driving, but the durability isn't there. Plus if you plan on spending alot of time in em, teh sole of the shoe is super narrow so plan on wearing out the leather along the edge.

yeah they are a bit narrow for walking. I usually wear like DVS or some other kinda skate shoe so these make it muuuuuch easier to feel the peddles for heel-toe and such.
chris88 11-10-2005 11:28 AM

i have a pair of piloti g-16s, amazing shoes, i got them thinking i would only wear them when i go for a spirited drive but find my self wearing them 90% of the time. go figure
fastgsx 11-10-2005 12:39 PM

+1 for Piloti.
I like the G16 but i personally have the Spyder. www.piloti.com

Low-top chucks 4 me!
Auto-x, lowtop canvas Converse all-stars, hands-down.
WgnWheel 11-10-2005 01:58 PM

for autox and cheap, i like piloti's and speedwells! both have "street shoes" that work great for everyday wear as well as autox. otherwise i wear speedwell boosts.
DILLIGAF Racing 11-10-2005 04:26 PM

ugh, I have wide feet. I have yet to see wide race shoes.
Yotsuya 11-11-2005 12:35 AM

Pilotis are pretty wide, and not bad for reaching the brake and gas simultaneously. Generally they're comfortable out of the car, too.

Reminds me I need to get a new pair of Rallyes.

BlazingEngine 11-11-2005 02:28 AM

gotta love the puma speedcats!!
dolmen_tor 11-11-2005 03:16 AM

Last year, Puma made the Grip(?) Cat that was based off the speedcat but with a little better sole coverage around the bottom of the shoe, a bit of cushioning towards the heel end of the sole, and a little more agressive tread towards the toe. They don't seem to be available on Puma's site anymore, but I love them. A good compromise. Speedcats are also good, and I find I wear mine as day-to-day sneakers without too many complaints, and $75 is a pretty good deal. 'Course, I always wanted to try the Pilotis.

I'm definatly looking in investing for some comfortable driving shoes soon. My only problem is, my shoe size. I wear a 16 US. :(

All Puma's that I have seen, and Piloti's seem to come in 13-14 and nothing more. I've tried on a pair of 14 Puma Grit Cats and they didn't fit me at all. Anyone have any advice, or know of any that are actualy offered in a 15 1/2 or 16?
Auto-x, lowtop canvas Converse all-stars, hands-down.
Hell ya! A friend of mine who very successfully competed with MR2 spyder against the McGeorge Gang out of Richmond VA, swore by them. I used to scoff until I got some, made my Simpsons sit in the closet collecting dust after trying them.
No need to change shoes after the run, like with the Simpsons. I worn out 3 pair before buying the Chuck's. Puma Speedkats rule too, and can be bought at most fashionable youth market shoe places.

Go Chuck Taylor Go
DILLIGAF Racing 11-15-2005 01:32 PM

Woot for not having wide feet. Just had my feet measured and I am a 13m, not a 12 wide like I have been for years. Now I just need to get off of these crutches.
trhoppe 11-15-2005 02:06 PM

Just bought some shoes today, and I did what I usually like to do. Go up in price point until I can't feel/tell a difference anymore and get those :)

Tried the GeForce mid tops $70 . Not bad, a little stiff on the sole for how thin it is, but not bad. Sparco Speedway was next $130. Definetly better then the GeForce, seemed to translate feel better then the GeForce, while being thicker. Piloti Corsa $160. Sparco with a few more bells and whistles, but no more comfort. Sparco Speedway it is :)

Did the same thing with gloves and suits as well. Ended up with the most expensive gloves ever  but went with the GeForce $400 545 suit as it was lighter and looked to be better quality then the $600 Sparco Fashion 5 suit and about on par with the $800 Sparco suits, (Sparco 5).

Yeah, I have Piloti Monacos and Rallyes and wear them all the time as casual shoes. My feet were a little sore after wearing the Rallyes all day at SEMA and then walking around the strip all night, but I did enough walking that they probably would have been sore no matter what I was wearing. But I also got them for free so I'm probably a bit biased.
Subie Gal 11-15-2005 02:41 PM

i have Piloti's and Gforce midtops....

i drive fine in either shoe

the Piloti's are top notch though if it's in your budget....

Ditto to that. I wear US 11EEE in street shoes, and all of these look to be even narrower than a D width street shoe. So you think a Piloti shoe would work? Would I have to go up a half size?
