Amazing!
johnfelstead 01-03-2002 02:21 PM

Guys, this is the kind of thing David Richards and ISC have been working at real hard over the last 12 months.

His aim is to have WRC one hour coverage daily on terestrial TV throughout the world. On top of this with the new web package that is coming out in 2002 WRC is going to explode in interest.

What they are working real hard on right now is getting the last few stages run live on national TV. This is one of the reasons why on leg2 and leg3 of the events the top 15 run in reverse as of this year, to build the tension.

All being well i should know tomorow if i am going to Monte Carlo with some of the crew at ISC so i should be able to give an insight into the new technology without giving any trade secrets away. Fingers crossed. :D
Coati 01-03-2002 02:21 PM

What time do stages typically end?
It's a nine-hour difference, and they're showing it at 8pm PST.
LordBass 01-03-2002 02:44 PM

Wow, could this really be? I just read a story yesterday about how a UK network (Channel 4? I don't remember) plans to carry this exact amount of rally programming, with same-day wrapups, each day of the event. And we're getting this in the US?? Woohah!!

johnfelstead 01-03-2002 03:03 PM

Yep, Chanel 4 it is. :D

Penny Mallory (ex rally driver), Robbie head (ex top British rally driver and Subaru WRC test driver in 2001) are heading up the programme. You guys might be getting the same programming. That would be pretty cool i think. :D
Crashton 01-03-2002 03:15 PM

Thanks for the heads up you've made me so happy!!!! :D :D :D
Never thought I'd see the day when we'd have same day rally coverage.

Chuck
orbit03 01-03-2002 03:28 PM

Did anyone else notice all the Dakar coverage? That is going to be a good week of rally coverage. Maybe all isn't lost with Speedvision. :)

This got me to thinking...

1) That's a pretty big change. Your saying that leg 2 & 3, or in other words DAY 2&3 are run in reverse order... So by the time the leaders make it onto the stages the road is already cleared? Or rutted as it may be? Won't that have some big influence on strategies? Can't wait to see this!

2) When ever I watch WRC I always wonder how they come up with the starting order for the first day... Do they run a qualifying run? Do they talk to some guy pulling levers in a closet? What gives? Sorry, this one's a little off topic.

Oh, and Coati, it's airing at 11:00 Eastern, or at the same time it airs for you(lucky fool get to watch just after dinner) But at 11:00 my time it's like 5:00am tomorow out there. Correct me if I'm wrong on this...Thanks

I guess that means about 4 hours of editing... WOW

Main changes for the 2002 WRC

Reconnaissance - The number of passages in reconnaissance for asphalt rallies may be increased to three (currently two).

Maximum number of starters - A maximum of 90 cars may start each event of the Championship.

Start order in the Championship Rallies -

Leg 1:
· The first priority drivers (maximum 30 cars) will start in the order of the provisional classification of the World Championship for Drivers for the current year. These cars will carry competition numbers 1 to 31.
· The second priority drivers (maximum 5 cars) will start after the first priority drivers. These cars will carry competition numbers 32 to 36.
· The third priority drivers (maximum 30 cars) will start in the order of the provisional classification of their respective Championships for the current year. These cars will carry competition numbers 51 to 80.
· All other drivers will start as recommended by the organiser. These cars will carry competition numbers 101 onwards.

Legs 2 and 3 (based on the classification of the previous leg):
· The first priority drivers will start as a group. The first 15 drivers will start in reverse order. The remaining drivers will start in the order of their provisional overall classification.
· The second priority drivers will start as a group after the first priority drivers in the order of their provisional overall classification.
· The third priority drivers will start as a group after the second priority drivers in the order of their provisional overall classification.
· All remaining drivers will start as a group after the priority drivers in the order of their provisional overall classification.

Start intervals - For safety reasons, the Stewards may extend the interval between any group of drivers or between any two drivers and may reseed any driver within a particular group.

Third priority drivers - Drivers entered in the FIA Junior World Rally Championship and the FIA Production Car World Rally Championship will be included in the third priority list.

Doughnuts - The drivers may not perform doughnuts at any time during the start, finish or other ceremonial procedures of the rally.

I'm hopeful we can pull at least this one positive out of all the mire Speedvision/SpeedChannel has created for themselves. I can't wait to see if we're also eligible for what ISC will offer...

Take a moment to thank Speedvision

If you can, saunter over to their website, the feedback section, and drop them a line saying how much you appreciated the New Year's Day extravaganza and that you support their decision to <apparently> start providing significantly increased rally coverage.

GO TOMMI!!!

I need to clean out my pants now! :D Oh man, how cool is same day coverage?! This day just keeps getting better and better!!
Chunky_Chicken 01-03-2002 06:41 PM

I think this is the same coverage they were always getting across the pond. I was looking at the WRC site:

And saw something like this, but I can't find it anymore. I hope to hell that this coverage doesn't get vito'd up hear in Canada. TSN (ESPN) screwed us out of alot of F1 coverage, if they do the same here I'm driving the dog sled through their lobby!!

Idjiit 01-04-2002 02:50 PM

Rock on Dave Richards and SpeedVision! Whoo hoo!
luxcar101 01-04-2002 05:49 PM

sorry but I fell off the past few months!

Who are the drivers for the 2002 WRC season? I've been so busy starting my new career and my illegal satelite got blasted and I needed a new card, took my friend a while to get back to me, so no SpeedVision plus their website is pure **** and I couldn't find sufficient WRC coverage. THANK GOD I LOGGED BACK ONTO I-CLUB!!!!!

again- Who are the drivers this year?
Coati 01-04-2002 05:51 PM

Check www.rallylive.com

I wonder when was the last time the WRX dualed with the Cosworth Escort (AMAZING CAR IF YOU ASK ME; just not a subaru) on the Championship Level? If anyone has any video's that would be tight!!!!!
johnfelstead 01-04-2002 09:37 PM

Hey Jamie. That was the first and last time you are gonna see those roof pods in the WRC (you saw a bit of history in the making).

They served their purpose but they were an idea that was not well accepted by the teams because 1) they were ugly and 2) they raised the centre of gravity of the cars. They were also vulnerable to damge from trees, never mind when Petter rolls it! ;)

Whats been designed now is a system that is 99% inside the car, mounted into the floor to get the weight down low and in a well protected environment. The only external part will be the satelite link unit which will sit on the roof (tiny). They are also carrying radio transmiters inside the car which will burst a stream of data to recievers in each stage. This then gets blasted to helicopters above the stage that blast this info to the control centre you saw in the service area.

I wish i could tell you what info is going to be transmited but all will be clear by mid season. It's going to blow your mind!

The new version is being tested on the Rally Monte Carlo.
Lifino 01-04-2002 10:35 PM

I'll say it. I'm super excited and dying of suspense here. I can not wait to see what this Virtual Spectator is all about! Seeing that picture just now makes my palms sweat...

This seems to be a pretty exciting time for the sport.

I went to the site, and watched the little On Stage videos they had. The way they had multiple cars driving the course at the same time(effectively side by side) brought a whole new level of excitement to watching it. The current timing method lets you see who's driving fastest, and gives an idea of where they are performing well, but that video let's you see exactly how fast they are going compared to how fast someone else is going at the same point... Through the turns!!

Yeah, I know, I'm just going over stuff you already know... sorry. I'll shut up now.

What'cha mean, Tested on Monte Carlo. As in, tested and the public gets to see how it's coming along? Or more like, Tested and reviewed in private by a few ultra-wealthy board members while they drink Tea? Eating crumpets...:)

-Silas
johnfelstead 01-04-2002 10:43 PM

the latter, less the crumpets.

This is a huge project, you guys wont see it till it's ready. Dave Richards has really put his weight behind this.

What you will see is going to change the way the sport works in many ways. Be patient because it will be well worth the wait. :D
Recce01 01-05-2002 01:09 AM

top secret........holding out?

shhhhhhhhh.........shhhhhhhhh I said, ok...ok.... ahh screw it... it's called Virtual Spectator available in 2003 100% live on the internet for around 50 bucks. The technology will be used this coming season to better coverage for television....I have a couple of sample discs I picked up at the Network Q that we will start the bidding at around...........? J.K> but you should seriously take the time to check out what is coming, it is way beyond impressive.... I'll give you the link for the website as soon as I get the samples in hand
MGXsport 01-05-2002 01:24 AM

Hmm this is very interesting. I can't wait to see this in action! Are you making a trip back to the states and NW anytime soon? I would really like to talk to you in person.

Chris
Jaykkub 01-05-2002 04:48 AM

Can anyone find this program listed on Tivo...I can't seem to find it anywhere.

rsquire 01-05-2002 06:18 AM

John

As I told Simon in chat some weeks back..

Rally Australia has been doing just this for the last two years.

They have in car video and GPS going to Helicopters flying above the stages which is then broadcast direct to the web.

Damn Aussies and Kiwis hey?!?!?! :D ;)

Richard

PS Enjoy Monaco... See you at Tbird ??

If not then the 'Ring trip at the end of April / beginning of May.. ???
johnfelstead 01-05-2002 12:56 PM

There is nothing secret about the basic idea/technology behind VS, what is hush hush is what information you are going to have access to. It's gonna do your head in.

And Richard is correct. The original project was a southern hemesphere thing, the WRC is taking this to a much higher level though.

VIRTUAL SPECTATOR

As to the TBird, i am working on that at the moment. I hope to be there so i can kick your ass. :D

The ring, i'll fill you in nearer the time. Right now Jon is trying to book the track for 2 days for a private session to do something very special. The plan is to run the track in the normal direction day one then run it backwards day2 . No barrier either so we will have the full straight! I'll be there driving the Atom race car if it's built in time.
