Rally Mexico: who has attended? who's going in 05?
A couple buddies and I are planning to attend Rally Mexico in March 05. I'm looking for anyone with first hand experience that might give us some information on how to make it a great trip. We have not been to any WRC events, nor have we been to that part of Mexico, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
WRXMaster 10-24-2004 03:42 PM

I went last year! We drove down there and had no problems. Leon is a great city and the people are awsome! Bring sun tan lotion/portible chairs/cooler "corona is 15cents each" They have maps of the spectator area at service. Its alot of fun when you go with a group. We drove in a sti and everyone treated it with respect "mexico doesnt sell subarus"
WRXedUSA 10-24-2004 08:12 PM

Bring:

Digi Camera w/extra CF cards
Backpack
Plenty of bottled water
Folding tripod chair (as mentioned)
Good shoes
Radio (Tune into the local broadcast)

Always make sure you get a copy of the day's running order so you know what the hell is going on. Often found at RallyHQ.

Wake up early, get to the stages first.

I drove the STi and had the race with Gil.

http://iamtofastadriver.com/STivsEVO9Mexico.WMV

Going to get some underbody protection and some WRX springs(extra 1" of height) for the STi on the stage and service roads next year.
ultrasonic 10-25-2004 01:50 AM

Ha, that video is great!

We are taking plenty of photo equipment, but since we are flying from St. Louis to Mexico we are somewhat limited on the bulky items (cooler, chairs, etc.). I suppose that we could purchase some of that stuff locally.

15 cent Coronas sounds good. <Tres cervezas, por favor!>

Thanks, guys, keep the suggestions coming.

If you have dirt bikes or 4wheelers it makes life alot easier!
JohnP555 10-25-2004 02:36 PM

Interesting that I saw a thread on this. My buddies and I are also seriously considering going down to Rally Mexico in March. Since it is supposed to fall on my spring break it makes things very convinient for me. So I guess I would like to know what the deal is with Mexico too? Whats hot and what can you do to make this an exceptional experience? Anything else to see or do in the area?
WRXMaster 10-25-2004 03:46 PM

Bars are great and alot of pirelli girls! Leon on woman are very friendly :disco:

World rally rocks. I suggest that any of your spring breakers swing down and have a taste of what the rest of the world gets into.

One question for you Mexico guys, Did you have trouble finding 92 octane for your STi's?
AndyRoo 10-25-2004 09:46 PM

whats the date for the 05 rally?

i would love to go.
WMH 10-25-2004 10:49 PM

Anybody have any recommendations on places to stay, or rent cars?

For the folks who went, which stages did you catch, and which ones would you recommend? Does Mexico keep the speccies in pens, or were you free to wander?
shoracer 10-26-2004 10:19 PM

You can't stay in the Hotels it is not allowed(okay you can just Holiday Inn is already sold out and I will need a place to stay). Rent a motorcycle you will twice as may stages, there is a place on Blvd. A. Lopez Mateos that rents bikes. Hotel Real Azteca Hotel is not bad that is were we stayed last year 01-447-764-11-11. Just don't let Roger from Rally American steal your room.
shoracer 10-26-2004 10:20 PM

If I knew next year stages I could give you some ideas.

Try to stay at a Holiday Inn Express....they're the newest and nicest in my opinion...

Beware of rental cars!! When we arrived they were completely out of cars!! I had made a reservation months in advance! Actually, I made two reservations and ended up getting a car...but there were at least 5 different people that ended up car-less! So plan adead...I hope the rental companies do to!

Cars are pretty much pinned in....except at practice on Thurs...that was the best day for spectating etc.

Ok you want to hit stages 1 and 4 on day one, 5,7,8 and 10(there is a very short distance between the two spectator spots for the repeated stages) on day two, and on day three 12 and 15 ( get up real early to get to the spectator spot on day three, the only way to them in on the rally stage road).
shoracer 10-27-2004 09:23 PM

All Holiday Inns are sold out.
JohnP555 10-28-2004 06:02 PM

Looks like a Spring Break in Mexico for me too!!!

Although I am probably gonna hit Cabo before the Rally, so this should be fun.

As far as finding lodging, whats the best bet? I know the Rally is centered in Leon, so I guess you just have to look for hotels in the city. As far as transportation to the stages, are rental cars the best option or ummm, pardon my ignorance, is there a public transportation system there that can help getting to see the actual rally?
jerrySTi 10-29-2004 12:09 PM

My only suggestion is to not go alone. I went to Rally Japan this past September and spent 5 months before hand trying to find others to hook up with. Was especially hard not being able to speak the language. It was fun and I got to see more than expected, but if I cannot go as a group I'd just as soon not go at all. Kinda hard to party alone, heh! And, this had to be the most expensive rally on the tour. Had to buy a SS ticket just to get into the service park, about 30-35US.

I might plan on going to some of the European rallies in '05, but would be one that is later in the year when I am less busy..... Mexico is too early in the year for me to plan for. But hope to be able to go someday.

I think you're a bit late to get a hotel room. Somebody around here might be able to give you some floor space though. I can't comment on transportation but I'd imagine a rental car would be the way to go, the rally stages seem kinda rural. You might be late on the rental car too.

BTW: Does anyone know if a car rental agency will rent to someone under 25?

pegdrgr 10-29-2004 01:12 PM

Some rental car places will, although most will not. Do not count on the car being there. We were one of the ones who had revservations for months in advance, called a couple days before and confirmed it, and got there to find we had to take a taxi to get to the hotel. We stayed in the Hotel Americana, Leon, which just happened to be the same place Subaru stayed. I got autographs and got to shoot the **** with Petter over a beer.

Best freaking time of my life. Even with the 3rd degree burn on the plane, the HORRIBLE sun burn, and the lack of rental car. Speaking fluent spanish helps a lot also, not that I do.

Anybody got any updates? Is every room in the area sold out? I just 'discovered' an extra week of vacation for next year and I'm planning to go. My wife is from Guadalajara (where her family lives), so logistics are cake for us other than a hotel room since we'll have a car and only be ~4 hours away.

My wife is actually going to GDL next week for business and is going to make some calls and try to get us some reservations somewhere. If anybody is interested, I'll update this thread with any interesting info she discovers.

We booked rooms a few weeks ago, and hotels were getting full. You should check into that as soon as possible. Let me know if you are going to be there, we'll have cervezas together.

Sounds good. I had put my sister-in-law in GDL on this task a few weeks ago, but she hasn't made much headway. I should know something by Tuesday, hopefully.

If it turns out to be impossible to get a room within reasonable proximity I may just try to drive out for one day of stages and then spend the rest of the vacation at Puerto Vallarta.
sbomm 12-16-2004 03:53 AM

I went last year with my brother who lives in Mexico and speaks Spanish very well.
We arrived in Leon by bus and found a very cheap and clean hotel next to the bus station. Only about 1 mile from the Polyforum where the Rally HQ is. We didn't have a car and got around by taxi. The most expensive ride was 200 pesos ($20) and over 30 miles to the jump stage on leg 2 in Silao. Getting into Rally HQ was 10 pesos ($1) each day. It was a great trip!
asquaredrex 01-13-2005 05:28 PM

Bump!

My girlfriend and I just booked flights down to Leon. We're psyched to be going... just have to find a hotel and a car (or motorcycles).

Speaking of, anyone know a place to rent motorcycles down there? A Google search didn't help...
Mopho 01-13-2005 06:34 PM

I have been twice to Rally Mexico

Try and spend at least one day before or after the rally touring around Guanajuato, it is an amazing city!

Your probably boned on a rental car, they don't have many and if they do they charge you up the butt for it, last year it cost me over $500 for a POS car

There is a travel package prepared by someone on Special stage you may want to get in on http://www.specialstage.com/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=222&topic_id=33445&mesg_id=33445&page= includes hotel and a van ride to the stages.

Here are my pics from last year

I'll be at the rally with the Autosport Engineering team. Stop in at the service park / rally HQ and say hi!
shoracer 02-11-2005 11:49 PM

please people I need a room to stay in I don't want to sleep in the STi. Floor is awsome, will help with room cost. Please PM.
ultrasonic 03-08-2005 12:02 AM

I'm almost packed. Flight leaves St. Louis in about 7 hours. We should have a daily blog with pictures and/or video. I'll post here or start a new thread.

We would like to catch up with any NASIOC guys, especially anyone from the St. Louis area.
leaknoil 03-08-2005 04:22 AM

The rallypass gets you bus rides out to the stages from what I understand. Wasn't able to get any info on times out of the travel people. They didn't seem to know much more then was on the website. Hopping a bus is whole lot easier then driving a car when you have a bad hangover. Can't even imagine how little fun it would be with a POS rental car in the wilds of rural mexico with crowds everywhere.

That helicopter ride out to the stages sounds like a blast but, it's like $350 per day. Maybe after I win that lotto I've been meaning to.
BeeGee 03-08-2005 03:40 PM

My flight for Guadalajara leaves in about 16 hours...we're planning to arrive Thursday and most likely leave Saturday. I hope the info about the bus rides pans out, because I'd hate to destroy my MIL's car getting to and from stages (but I will if I have to).
sbomm 03-09-2005 10:50 PM

Just get a taxi to the stages. Bring the course map and point where you want to go.
shoracer 03-09-2005 11:45 PM

we are here and have pics of us with all the cars that would make everyone jealous.

I've never tried Victoria, but we'll have a round upon your recommendation. I usually order Negra Modelo.

Today we are going to SS2 Ortega - Esperanza. In the afternoon we will be at SS6 Santana - Cubilete. Yesterday I had the opportunity to thrash our rental car up SS6, and it is one of the most amazing roads I have ever driven.

Keep checking back with our web page. As long as we are not totally exhausted, or drunk, we will post updates nightly.
