Rally Monte Carlo donut?

Anyone remember when the guy, can't remember his name of course, or the yr, maybe 03 or 04. He drove a peugot and had such a huge lead that he did a nasty donut in one of the 180 degree uphill turns, anyone? Looking on youtube but found nothing so far.

Are you thinking of Gilles Panizzi at Catalunya in 2002?

Holy crap, look at everyone on the overpass!
For some reason, this is the first time I've ever really taken notice of that.

I see that Fox is airing some of the Rolex 24 this year and Speed is picking up the rest. Glad to see one of the big boys picking this up. Sure it's only 90 mins but it's start.

Yeah, the only reason they're airing it is because of all the NASCAR drivers participating. But I guess we take what we can get.
Yeah, I was watching that event on Speed when it aired. Very cool move.

You can blame the FIA for being killjoys: "Donuts are prohibited under article 20.3 of the 2006 FIA General Prescriptions". From what I remember, Panizzi feigned ignorance when he was questioned by the officials and got away with it. I guess the penalty is pretty steep; robo-Loeb was almost fined 10,000 Euros after the Argentina rally:

WORLD RALLY News Friday, 5th May 2006
FIA drops fines for donuts [updated].
The FIA, the governing body of the World Rally Championship has revised its decision to fine Rally Argentina winner, Sebastien Loeb and three of his colleagues for performing donuts for the crowd at the finish at the Cordoba stadium on Sunday.
Loeb, Gigi Galli, Manfred Stohl and Daniel Sordo were each fined 10,000 Euros for what was viewed as 'hazardous actions', however this decision has now been reversed. The change of heart is no doubt due to the fact marshals of the event had asked them to do it to help entertain the 40,000 people, who had just watched the two super-specials that concluded the action.
In a further development though, the FIA has confirmed that all four have been given a suspended one-rally ban - and should they repeat the 'donut' manoeuvre again in 2006, then they will face being excluded from the following event. Donuts are forbidden by the FIA on safety grounds.
The full statement from the stewards read:
"At the conclusion of the rally the following crews who drove over the finish ramp performed donuts before leaving the stadium:
- Daniel Sordo / Marc Marti car #11
- Manfred Stohl / Ilka Minor car #7
- Gigi Galli / Giovanni Bernacchini car #25
- Sebastien Loeb / Daniel Elena car #1
"Donuts are prohibited under article 20.3 of the 2006 FIA General Prescriptions.
"When leading drivers perform acts that blatantly violate the regulations an extremely bad and an unacceptable example is set.
"The stewards summoned the crews and wherever applicable the representatives of the entrants.
"The hearing was held with all those concerned present. The stewards were informed that donuts were performed at the instance of some of the marshals present. The stewards requested the drivers to try and identify the marshals concerned.
"The crews went back to the stadium and returned without any conclusive identification because the number of marshals present was considerably less - and the finish ramp was no longer in use.
"Under the circumstances the stewards, after deliberation, accept the statement made by the crews at face value but at the same time conclude that the offence committed is serious in nature and prohibited.
"[As such we] pass a sentence of exclusion on the crews which excludes them from participating in their next WRC rally. This sentence of exclusion is suspended for the reminder of the season and will be applied immediately in the event of a similar infringement during the course of the year."

man i cant beleive that was in 02, i thought it was 03, but oh well. my how time flies, and how things have changed since the good ol days :( . back in the speedvision days, and the wrc marathon between xmas and new years. at least this year espn2 is covering rally america and formula d, so now theres something good to watch.

Wow I can't believe this from a sport where the fans stand literally on the race course half the time. "Saftey concerns" what the hell could happen? Never seen anyone in Nascar get hurt from a donut, even when they light the rear tires on fire.

I think that is still my favorite rally car ever.
And I loved 2001 and 2002 WRC. I remember looking forward to spending a couple hours on saturday and sunday nights to watch SCCA Pro Rally and WRC coverage on speed. Hell, that coverage is basically completely responsible for me buying a Subaru in the first place.
Barrett Jackson and Nascar suck.

Fining drivers for doing donuts for the crowd it so stupid. Its a spectator sport, and with Citroen/Loeb's domination over the past 2 seasons the FIA and WRC administration should be happy someone is doing something to keep it interesting.

It looks like that was a very popular spot to do donuts. Was that on purpose, or were they overshooting that turn by accident??? Phil seemed to be rather mad at solberg :furious:
And Loeb needs to work on his champagne spraying skills

from what i saw, it looked like petter turned a little accident into a showboat opportunity. i thought it was kinda cool in the spirit of the event. nothing was really at stake for him and he used the opportunity to show off for the crowd. Just seemed like he should have let Phil know ahead of time he was gonna pull that.
