Rally Tips part 1

Rally Tips
Ok I have some questions for people that rally all the time.

What is the fastest style of driving in a front wheel drive rally car?

1. Sliding the car by steering? Turning the wheel in the direction of a turn quickly to get the rear to slide?

2. Left foot braking to get the rear to slide?

3. Locking the brakes for a slit second to slide the car?

4. Using brake horsepower to slide the car?

I went to European rally school and used 1. It worked really well but this was on normally street tires not rally tires. I have watched in car cameras of famous finnish drivers in front wheel drive cars ........they seem to use slideing the car by steering? Many people I have talked to in prorally always say to use leftfoot braking to steer the car. I am just wondering which quickest way to slide a car in a turn?
darkangelgrafix 04-08-2003 12:42 AM

use a combo of slide steering ans left foot braking.....actually just go out and find your nitche....its mostly about what you feel most comfortable with, but my ecomendation is LFB....learn it, love it.
StuBeck 04-08-2003 10:19 AM

Pretty much what I do in my vastly underpowerd car is left foot brake into the corner, let the car decide where it wants to go for a bit, and then throw the steering into the turn and throttle at the same time. Now, this is is a POS car, and I was only doing a road rally, so the speeds were slow. Also, I've only done a two road rallies, so I have a TON more to learn. This got me through hairpins fairly well, my tires would hook up on the exit and the rear would catch up to the front pretty quickly.

2wd = left foot brake...

in my 2wd P car i was steering by braking.. period.
car will slide a LOT but you dont ever want to lift off the gas in a 2wd... thus.... braking is the best way to steer the car.

(you lift.. you spin... pretty simple concept )

hope this helps.. have fun!
practice... practice... practice...

You mean RWD, not 2WD right? If you let off on a RWD car, weight shifts to the front robbing the rear wheels on traction, cause the back end to slide even more or spin out. For FWD, letting off shifts weight forward increasing traction of the drive wheels.

chris

edit: According to Stig Bloomquist, RWD cars award aggressive drivers, while FWD cars award careful drivers. Or something to that effect, since you can barely understand what he is saying
rallystud 04-08-2003 03:15 PM

Isnt it faster to just jab the wheel in the direction of the turn and let it slide on its own?
darkangelgrafix 04-08-2003 04:43 PM

um...thats only if you dont care about where your car goes.....left foot braking is the key...
Subie Gal 04-08-2003 05:26 PM

no, i mean 2wd cars...

get one into a corner.. and lift.
see what happens :)

you'll spin...
whichever way the wheels were pointing when you lifted...

2wd... 90 left hand turn... left foot braking... ;)

steering by braking helps TONS in 2wd...
cheers

Oh well thanks for your comments.......... My first club rally should be at the Oregon trails 2 Club rallys:devil:

Yea I want to make 4 club rallys before the end of the prorally season. I want to try and make it to Lake super ProRally:devil: The problem is most of the club rallys are on the west coast! Its def going to be a long boring drive! Subiegal I have a question? Is it better to do a pendulum turn on a 90+ turn? Sorry about all my questions but I want to make sure that I dont start bad habbits.
recce02 04-08-2003 07:19 PM

personally I have learned to use the Finn Flick. And boy is it crazy.

Isnt that another name for a pendulum turn?

steps

1. Highspeed straight into a 90+ turn
2. Lock brakes up while turning away for the turn
3. Then turn wheel into direction of turn while still locking the brakes
4. when slowed enough release the brakes and excelerate out

Someone told me you slow down faster when your sliding sideways.
MJH 04-08-2003 08:15 PM

Whoa! Just out of curiosity, can't you hit 4 ClubRallys before LSPR without going so far?

I can count three between now and then in either Michigan or Minnesota. Throw in Ski Sawmill, and you've got four, having barely had to cross the Mississippi.

Not that it's really my business, anyway. I'm just thinking out loud.

Might as well explain myself.

My car wont be finished until june.

The two double headers I plan on going to are - Oregon Trails and 2 club rallys in Bemidji, MN. My car wont be finished in time for SKi Sawmill. I cant make the race in SteamBoat " College related"
MJH 04-08-2003 10:01 PM

That makes more sense.

Are you also hitting the club rally in Cadillac Michigan in Sept?

re: driving...

have you considered Tim O'Neils rally school?
i think that would help you get a lot more comfortable quickly...

you'll get a feel for what to do and when with time.
practice... practice.... practice... ;)

rallystud 04-09-2003 04:13 PM

I went to European rally school......................I got alot of seat time and managed to master there course. They didnt base any of there training on leftfoot braking. THey had stock road tires so the rear end would go out on its own with just a flick of the steering wheel "or jab with the brake". While on my own time I have learned the left foot brakeing methond. It works really well:eek: Practice makes perfect:cool: If I had the extra money I would go to Tims but I am a broke college student.
Subie Gal 04-09-2003 05:46 PM

if you're a broke college student...

then you're gonna LOOOOOOOVE the bills that come along with this sport

entry fee $400
tires $600
gas, food, hotel for weekend - $350

bashing the hell out of your car and averaging $500 in repairs per rally??? priceless

good luck....
:D
Jamie
rallystud 04-09-2003 07:41 PM

Yea I know the costs:eek: Thats why I am broke! I have just enough money to finnish my car and run it :disco: but when your a rally freak its worth every penny
fengshui-fu 04-09-2003 09:36 PM

All the more reason to run a real crapbox. so when it costs 500$ to repair, thats basically the price of the car

Rally School
When money allows, definitely enroll in the O'Neil rally school.

The Euro school heavily teaches hand brake technique.

Tim's school teaches left foot braking and pendulum turns, (Scandinavian Flick) then eases you into hand brake turns.

You'll really benefit from seeing and learning both methods.

Good Luck!

Nothing will replace time at Team O'Neil rally school. Skip one club rally and spend the money on the school. It will pay off in so many ways. You'll be faster, more confident and less likely to crash. Go there, there is no alternitive. Tell them Nick sent you. I can't say enough. GO THERE.
dch 04-10-2003 01:55 PM

You'll groove on the Minnesota rallies (except for the "Cow Patty"- Right Jamie?) :D

Go for the O'Neil experience, you won't regret it.

It'll help you do this:

And will minimise the number of times you do this:
