Rally Turkey Starts Thursday! Talk about it Here!
The 555 Subaru World Rally Team will be entering regular drivers Tommi Mkinen and Petter Solberg in the Rally of Turkey. Both will be eligible to score Manufacturer's points for the team.
Both newcomers to the Turkish event, Tommi and Petter will be drawing on their knowledge of similar rallies, including Greece and Cyprus. The experience and talent of the two Subaru stars, twinned with the Impreza's impressive reputation on rough gravel surfaces, promises an encouraging debut for the 555 Subaru World Rally Team on this brand new event.
Petter Solberg said : I am feeling very comfortable with the new car - Sweden was much better once I changed my tyre choice and I was happy with the performance. You can see that the car is strong from the good job that Tommi did, and I set the fastest time on the final stage. We're going to use a set-up very close to the one we used in GB, with just a few changes. I'm in the same position as everybody else with this event - I don't really know what to expect as we haven't been able to test there. That said, I think we have everything under control. A new event is just part of the game and I am looking forward to it.
Tommi Mkinen added : I feel so very good with the new car, we are smiling a lot at the moment! The result in Sweden was very good for us and we are feeling confident. I have no idea at all of what to expect with the conditions and the stages in Turkey, I have never been there - even on holiday! However, I've been testing in Spain this week and did some work on the set-up of the car for Turkey. We had one terrible day of weather and another of very good weather and the car performed well in both so based on that, I'm not too worried about the type of conditions that we will find in Turkey. We are certainly ready for the next event.
555 Subaru World Rally Team Principal, David Lapworth said : It's always challenging going to a new event - and as Turkey remains an almost complete unknown for us, it promises to be an interesting rally. From the weather reports that we've received so far, it seems that there's a very high chance of rain in Turkey over the next few days, perhaps even more than in Wales in November, so we're preparing accordingly. We sent our Operations Director, Paul Howarth, to the event last year and have also been familiarising ourselves by watching video footage of the stages. We're not trying anything new on the car - it's a brand new event, so we're going with a proven set-up, which we know well. There will be so much other information to process that we want to be as focused as possible.
"The actual stages included in the event are fairly twisty, similar to Cyprus, but a little less extreme. The unpredictable and changing weather conditions could make the event really tricky like Monte Carlo, which should suit Tommi's driving style. The Impreza is well suited to gravel events, and the Pirelli tyres have traditionally thrived in cold and slippery conditions.
"It's a popular misconception that new events such as Turkey put all the drivers, both new and old, on a level playing field because in practise, you often find that it's the more experienced drivers that are able to adjust more quickly to the changing conditions. Similarly, while people think that new events benefit new teams, it's the more established teams that can utilise their experience of competing in different conditions in countries such as Indonesia. It's great to have a new challenge in the Championship, but as it's new it's very difficult to predict the outcome. It should be a fascinating event, I'm really looking forward to it.

i feel both Solberg, and Mak. will do well at Turkey. though its new to them, its new to most drivers as well. and both drivers have an excellent record in gravel. not to mention the pounding that the subarus can take. i can see mcrae winning it though. citroen will be out of the top 5 ( :p hehe,i can wish right!!??), at least one suby in the top 5, and gronholm will crash  . skoda will do well, being a tough car as well. those are my predictions. lets hope subys do well!!!

From Richard Burns' PR -
The event itself becomes the sixth round of the series to take place in the Mediterranean region, joining other events in France (Monte Carlo, Corsica), Italy (Sanremo), Greece (Acropolis), Cyprus and Spain (Catalonia). The organisers have worked hard to obtain WRC status and have applied for inclusion in the world calendar for the past three years. Initially run on asphalt, the event became an all-gravel affair in 2001 in order to meet the recommendations of the FIA.
Its format matches WRC guidelines, with a route split into three legs and featuring approximately 380 kilometres of stages. The service park and Rally Headquarters will be based by the sea, not far from the historic town of Antalya, one of Turkey's leading tourist venues.
The stages themselves are something of a blend of those found in the World Championship rounds that take place in nearby Greece and Cyprus. As in the latter, average speeds are expected to be reasonably low, while the gravel mountain tracks promise to be as rough and punishing in places as those of the Acropolis Rally, making it a terrain that should suit the Peugeot 206 WRC which won in Cyprus in 2002.
should be a great event!!! :D

Heh, poor Burns and Gronholm... You know you're having a bad rally when you're getting spanked by Gilles Panizzi... on gravel.

My vote for the rally is now behind this guy:

and who says Petter gets all the chicks?

I think the first picture is describing what Makinen want to do in the second picture

SubieGal -
Why are you surprised about Rovanpera? Am I the only person who thinks he's underrated? It's hard for him to standout at Peugeot, but I think he's a great driver... He's like Carlos, always there but not quite at the top.

No you aren't the only one that thinks he's underrated. I think he's due for another win & it just might come this weekend. Too bad he drives a Pug though.
| WagonMonster | 02-28-2003 12:41 PM |
Even Panizzi is ahead of Burns and Gronholm
| Idjiit | 02-28-2003 03:09 PM |
To be fair though, it sounds like road position was a big deal today. I'm sure that gave both Rovanpera and Panizzi the edge over their teammates.

Harri is a fantastic driver!
typically tho.. he's not leading the rally... ;)
i'm pleasantly surprised at the shake ups...
this is going to be a fun rally to watch... :)
on all accounts, it sounds rough as ell...
typically sump guards dont just... break :D
no idea how this will play out...
and i'm gonna miss the reports most of the weekend...
grrrrrrrrrr..... fingers crossed for Tommi!

Comparing Hari to Carlos is rather a stretch. Mind you Carlos won the Championship twice and was second numerous times. Hari is a very good driver, who never had his chance. I don't think he ever ran a full championship. He always was a part-time driver like he is now at Peugeot. He probably never had enough money to have a chance as a full-time factory third driver. Remeber, Carlos needed Telefonica to go with him to Citroen. This was the final seal on his contract (plus a pay cut).

Anybody in need of help with WRC radio. Check the events/stages local times, then go to worldtimeserver.com and see what is the current time in Turkey and you will know when to tune in. Generaly once you wake up in the morning you should catch a few remaining stages of the day...

Unfortunately, that wasn't his stupidy. It was more likely the stupdity of his crew and his co-driver.

What's the diference? That is the only factory driver with Turkey Rally experience and if you factor that in, it sounds even funnier.
Too bad Tommi had so many problems today. He is still in points and let's hope he stays there (1 for himself, 2 for Subaru).

I guess Tommi and Kaj must be mechanics: After stage 8 - "...we put a rock behind the suspension spring to try and correct the camber of the wheel and drove it carefully back to service. But, even with the rock the handling was not so bad and the car was behaving well."
Hope their luck improves tomorow!

hahah the handling was not so bad w/ a rock wedged in there to correct the camber? HAHAHA

So there you have it:
1 point for Tommi
2 points for Subaru.
Let's hope for better luck in New Zealand.
Carlos remained in first,
Richard is second (now leading in drivers championship)
Francois third.
I am absolutely amazed by Duval's performance, a rookie with a new co-driver...

Glad to see Carlos on the top spot!!!
Does suck about the SWRT, but I think the car is showing it does have the ability to take one of our guys to a championship, just got to shake the bad luck.
Gonna be an awesome season!

New Zealand isn't so rough. The car seems to have improved in reliability; Tommi's feeling better psychologically; the Impreza is on pace with the Pugs and Citroens--the next rally is also gonna be real interesting.
I think it's cool that Sainz finally got a win. He deserves it.
For some reason, even though Pug and Citro are related, I don't think I mind seeing Citro in the lead. But I'd be happier if the Subies had it.

Good to have a real tough Rally in the schedule since Safari is iffy at best.
Congrats to Carlos!!!!! It's great to see him win again. He's had more than his share of bad luck in recent years so I'm glad to see it all go his way. I loved Nicky's comment that he's "done more Rallys than some of these other guys have done stages!!" Looks like the new codriver is working out.
Burns is putting together a very sneaky season... even though Gronholm has shamed him on outright pace, 'ol Burnsie is the guy getting the points. Perhaps a nice points cussion will lead to some more aggressive driving as the season progresses.
Quite the moral victory for Panizzi to score so well in a private entry. I agree with the point that he benefitted from a well swept road (Burns commented that once the line developed there was tarmac levels of grip). Still I hope Corrado stews on that one for a while! :disco:
