Return to Targa Newfoundland

Adversity wont stop father and son team from returning to Targa
ST. JOHNS Never mind the broken bones and busted cars: Tony and Ryan Kloosterman are heading back to Targa Newfoundland.
After all, the father and son team from London, Ontario, feel they have some unfinished business with one of North Americas longest and toughest motorsport events.
After our experience last year, theres no way that we cant come back, said father and driver Tony. We didnt feel we had the opportunity to drive the car. When we return in 2006, well have a greater respect for the road and the conditions. And I feel like I owe my son a decent ride!
Thats a pretty optimistic attitude for a pair that endured a week of pain, hardship, disappointment, expense and, ultimately, redemption at Targa Newfoundland 2005.
The challenges the team faced in their first attempt at Targa reads like the script for a Hollywood movie. An off-road incident on Prologue Day injured Ryans arm and forced the competitors to make extensive overnight repairs to their Subaru. True to the spirit of the event, they were back competing the following morning, with Ryan navigating with his broken arm in a sling. The Prologue experience was to set the tone for their week, as a series of mechanical problems and adventures on the route seemed to add daily to the list of obstacles they faced. At almost every stop, from lunch breaks to arena car shows, the Kloostermans could be seen working on their car. A troublesome transmission threatened to end their rally several times.
At a certain point, we knew that we just couldnt give up, said Tony. It was powerful; we had gone so far and faced so much. If we had given up, we would have failed. We decided that as long as the car could go, we could go. When Ryan didnt think we could make it, I encouraged him. And when I lost hope, he encouraged me. We worked quite hard and the only day we did not meet our target times was on Day 4, after we lost third gear. We only had first and fifth.
Most days, Tony can be found working for Canada Post as the Director for South Western Ontario. However, he has been passionate about motorsports ever since he navigated his first rally with his father when he was 12. Tony competed in both the Ontario and Canadian Rally Championships before taking time off to raise a family. About four years ago, he returned to competition, focusing on solo events.
The motorsports bug bit son Ryan about two years ago, when he entered his first solo event. He has been hooked ever since.
Rallying has always been in the family, but no event could have prepared me for Targa Newfoundland, said Ryan. It was something I did not expect. It exceeded my expectations. It was overwhelming and exhausting.
Even with all the hardships they faced during the week, the Kloostermans kept a commitment they made to the Childrens Make A Wish Foundation before the rally began. On Saturday, September 17, they presented a driving suit donated by OMP to a young boy with cancer. They spent much of the day with him, including taking him for a few spins around Vinland Motorsports Charity Slalom.
Its no wonder the other competitors voted for the Kloostermans for the Spirit of Targa award. This trophy is presented to the entry that, in the opinion of the rest of the competitors, best represents the perseverance, fortitude and determination necessary to succeed in the often-difficult world of motorsports. In the past, the Spirit of Targa award has been presented to teams who have undergone the most trials and tribulations to get to, or remain in, the competition. In the 2005 event, the tale of the Kloostermans set a new standard for perseverance.
Their 2002 Subaru WRX is undergoing some major upgrades for the 2006 event and will feature the teams new name Never Quit Racing. There will be an upgraded suspension, a new drive train and, of course, a new transmission. So what are the Kloostermans doing with the transmission that gave them so much trouble?
A friend is actually turning our transmission from Targa 2005 into a coffee table, laughed Tony.
The fifth annual Targa Newfoundland will start and end in St. Johns and will cover more than 2,100 kilometres of the challenging, twisty roads of the central and eastern portion of the island of Newfoundland over six days, including more than 500 kilometres of closed-road, flat-out Targa Stages. In addition to the two primary competitions for Targa and Grand Touring entries, a new category known as Targa Tour has been added for 2006. The latter gives motorsports enthusiasts and collectors of unique and rare vehicles the opportunity to enjoy all that Targa has to offer without the pressure of competition or the need for stringent vehicle preparation.
During the last 4 months a number of Nasioc vendors have stepped up and really helped us out in getting ready for this event.
I would like to thank the following people who have really supported us and see the value in helping a grassroots competitor.

Wow! Glad to see you're at it again! I guess I should expect that from "neverquit racing".
Best of luck to both of you.
When you get a chance could you give us a quick run down of how your car is equipped and set up (without giving away any secrets of course!)?

Wishing you the best of luck... it's an awesome event that I hope to participate in with a 1987 Porsche 924S that I've semi-inherited. Lots of work ahead of me, but will be worth it.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I thought everyone might like to read Tony's summary of Day 1 & 2 as posted on the SPDA site.
Day 1 is over
Lots of carnage
mini usa throws it into the ditch at high speed just 2k into the event. the car may be a complete write off, crew are okay
narinis put thier legacy off the road but manage to continue after changing a control arm
echo rolls badly in stage 4 and halts the stage. both driver and co-driver taken to hospital as precaution, havent heard any more news yet
stage 4 Pat Richard blows the motor in the Team Subaru rally car, they are getting a mototr fromt he dealer tonight and continuing tomorrow
stage 4 Bill Arnold ( 4 time targa winner) blows a head gasket
Porsche cayman s hits veranda in gander and tears up the front bumper and the front rads, the car is finished and being transported back to toronto to be repaired for Daytona in a couple weeks
We had a great day, fast but cautious, 8 10s most of the day. Caught the SRT Jeep twice on 2 diff stages. Unlimited class is going to be a dogfight for sure. Results will be posted late tonight but I think we are in good shape.
only issue with the car was the starter didnt work for a bit, not sure whats going on but its working now
cooked the brakes on stage 6, they were smoking for about 10 minutes after the stage. We worked them pretty hard and had virtually no brakes at the end due to the heat.
The crew took care of evrything at service. Things are going real well.
Ryan, just walked in, we are leading unlimited by 3 seconds.
Day 2 is now finished
an exciting day with 7 stages in all
5 prior to lunch and 2 after
first stage was a short one to wake everyone up. it was tight and twisty in the small village of avondate, we beat the time by 4 seconds or so
the next stage was tight again but very rough, we lost 12 seconds but that was a good time in our class
the third stage we cleared by 3 seconds and the fourth as well
stage 5 was a 28km stage into lunch. The avg speed was set at 128kph, i did my best but was cautious as i am still learning the car at these speeds. The roads are very rough and having the car bounce sideways at 180 is a little unnerving. we lost about 20 seconds to pacione there ( the same amount we had beat him in the previous 4 stages)
on the way out we lost another 20 odd seconds to him.
In both these stages I was passed by Keith Townsend. Once Keith passed me I was able to keep up to him for the remaining 6-10k , the in car video will be nothing short of awesome, you might ask why I was able to keep up to him when he had caught up 30 seconds to catch me. Believe me its much easier to keep up to someone watching their taillights as opposed to leading. He was driving harder then i was prepared to to catch me.
stage 7 we got 3 seconds back from paccione.
Currently we are second in unlimited about 21 seconds behind him. McKenzie is about 30 seconds back in 3rd.
Tomorrow it calls for monsoon rain. the playing field will level out when the "beauty of all wheel drive" takes hold.
Richard had more problems today. apparenty all the flywheel bolts sheared and they had no drive.
They are currently working on the car and will have it ready by morning. they are about 37 minutes behind us now in penalty.

Press releases, generally, are written when some person/organization wants to release some information to the press. If you have information about yourself, who's going to write it?
Perhaps you were confusing the above with a news article, or whatever one would call something written by a reporter.
Ahhh, hell, what do I know about it. For the betterment of all of us, please educate us on the PR machine that gets your race team into the press and drives sponsors to your door, all without writing press releases.

Day 3 summary posted by crew member Ivano:
Day 3 is now over.
The talk of the morning was when the rain would hit, and how hard. Well it did and it was fierce.
The cars and crew made the 90 km trek to the first stage, thats were the fun began. Tony lived up to his promise of an exciting vacation, the rear left drive shaft on the car broke at the start of the stage. We had many spares, but we didn't have one of those (Thanks to Subaru Canada and Can-Jam for making these parts available. We picked up the car and hurried to the lunch stop anther 40 km away. It was at this point that the storm hit, 120 km/h winds and lots of rain. We got the car to the lunch stop, unloaded it and replaced the half shaft in front of a Canada Post Office, in New West Val. Just imagine, working on a car in the middle of the road, with the weather mentioned above, yes we had it changed quick. Back on the road for NQR.
Because of flooding stages 4 and 5 had to be canceled.
The final stage of the day went well, they guys had the car going at a quick pace.
Well the others in the field the subarus arnt having the best luck.
Team Rotelle - 02 WRX Wagon, cracked front rotors (other cars experiencing this, more later), bent right control arm (replaced), loosing fourth and a bumper that has seen better days.
Team Racine - WRX Wagon, demolished second gear, have a new box going into it as we speak.
Team Subaru - First good day, the car stayed running.
After all was said and done the Kloosterman's are now 5th in class 16 minutes behind the leading Mustang.
We are happy to report that the rain finally let up around 10 pm.
P.S. Wait till you see the pics, I will never complain about the rain storms we get in Toronto.
Ivano D.

Ivano D.

Day 4
sorry didn't post yesterday guys.
I had a lousey internet connection.
we broke a halfshaft on the first stage right on the start line.
the guys did a great job changing it in torrential rain. I would estimate less then 15 minutes in total to do the job.
unfortunately we missed 2 stages and took about 18 minutes in penalties.
Today we had 7 stages.
The car is working very well.
We are setting good times and I am extremely happy with what transpired today. the car is capable of winning this class. We managed some serious air time on the way into lunch. I am sure pictures will be posted soon.
On a sour note, a fellow a lot of you know had a fairly serious incident today.
Craig Seko put his Porsche into the ocean. When we went by he gave me the thumbs up indicating hes okay. I hear it was touch and go getting his codriver out but they are at the hospital for observation. They should be released shortly.
tomorrow is the last day. We are out of the running for any trohies but now are driving for experience,
give you an update tomorrow
Tony
Side note: Team VDG's STi is currently in second place overall and their 1967 Acadian is in third.

Hi Guys, the event is over and thanks for all the positive comments.
Unfortunately missing those 2 stages wednesday put us out of contention.
We set some very good times during the week and yesterday we were second to Pat on 7 stages, I'll take that any day.
it looks like there is a small mistake in our overall score but its not worth enquiring, Ill do a detailed analysis on the sacores when i get home.
Overall we had a great time. Last year we had so much trouble we couldnt enjoy the time or the roads. This year we got a chance to actually drive them hard and the car was awesome.
Many thanks to all the companies that supported us for this event.( listing in the original post)

To complete the set here's Tony's final report form SPDA:
Targa is officially over. We finished and recieved our finishers medalion tonight.
The day comprised of 9 stages, the first 3 were about 17-18km long each.
The first was a beautiful fast flowing stage. unfortunately an Acura that was running without a functioning terratrip misjudged a corner and went end over end and then barrel rolled into the side of a cliff. luckily both of the crew were okay. even luckier is that they rolled to the left into the rockface as opposed to the 160 ft drop into the ocean on the right., The stage was cancelled due to blockage.
the second stage i drove poorly. the in car tape is evidence that i was about 10% slower and pat richard caught me in about 12 K, when he passed he hooked a ditch and showered us with rocks, the hood was damaged as well as the windshield and side marker light. Esseltine in the 510 was contending for a class win and rolled over a guardrail. both chris and bob were fine but its a shame to see that nice car damaged.
The third stage was pretty wide open and d we caught narini in the legacy near the end.
after this we had 5 short stages. We caught pacione in his mustanfg in one stage and had a couple of moments in other stages but we had a blast. I have in car video of all todays stages. We almost had a close encounter with a rock but managed to stop the car an inch (maybe less) from it
Pacione spun his mustang into the ditch on the last stage and lost unlimited clas due to it.
Results aren't final yet but i suspect we got 4th in class. We took a 17 minute 52 second penalty on wednesday for the 2 missed stages. We made up over 2 minutes yesterday on all our competition and i think we had a similar day today
Overall a great rally. The 2 missed stages killed us but the car is awesome. I am very very proud of what we built for this event and i know what its capable of.
Many thanks to our crew who were there all the time and did a bang up job.
I owe them all a great deal of thanks for thier time , efforts and dedication
Oh, and Craig Seko drove across the finish line in his Porsche, he missed all the stages today working on the car and drying it out, but it did cross under its own power. I was so happy to see that.
Tony
