Rice or not Rice? part 1

Rice or not Rice?
2005 Crystal gray WRX with Seibon CF Hood?
audio1der 02-01-2005 07:10 PM

If you like it, thats all that matters. Thats why we like cars, everyone can do someting different.
mcowger 02-01-2005 07:17 PM

The goal of a carbon fiber hood is to reduce weight over a heavy steel hood. You have a light aluminum hood, and the CF hood wouldn't make a significant difference in weight. If you are racing and already have a stripped car and no stereo, etc, then fine. Other wise, its rice.

Having said that, I think silver cars with CF hoods look awesome. Just don't lie to yourself that its for anything but looks. Rice is fine, as long as you admit it to yourself and are happy with it.
ms3p 02-01-2005 07:20 PM

If your OEM hood is very beat up and in poor condition ( I doubt your 05 is though), CF might be a good solution to the problem. If not, then it's not really worth the cash. Much better places to spend it.
Yodaman 02-01-2005 08:06 PM

Well I am not even sure if it is possible I got into a small accident and the hood/bumper needs replacing. I was thinking about maybe replacing them with aftermarket but I am not sure if insurance/bank will even allow it or if the bodyshop can do it behind the banks back.

This is what got me interested in the hood.

I was also thinking about this front bumper.

Handsdown 02-01-2005 08:08 PM

some insurance companies encourage it... it's cheaper.

and the rice thing really has been beat to the ground.
Yodaman 02-01-2005 08:09 PM

What about the bank though? :\
23b_Rex 02-01-2005 11:24 PM

it will look good but for the money you could be getting more performance
da n00b 02-01-2005 11:40 PM

Yeah its all up to you. I wouldn't say its rice to reduce weith but that is true your aluminum hood is pretty light so the CF wouldn't make a difference. I would say that would look pretty sweet.
CalcVictim 02-01-2005 11:41 PM

I don't think it's rice if the rest of the car is done, lowered and have nice wheels.
the_owl 02-02-2005 01:43 AM

totally rice. what are you thinking ?!?!?!

:D

SubieRX 02-02-2005 06:54 AM

Yeah it looks sweet. I say go for it if you like it. Everyone has there own preferences. I would never get one because I'd rather spend it on something that adds performance, but I am always jealous of how nice other wrx's/sti's look with cf hoods.
Akina 02-02-2005 07:47 AM

Do they (as in any good performance company) make a hood similar to owl's, except for the bug eyes model?
Yodaman 02-02-2005 08:46 AM

That is the thing, I would not be sacrificing my performance mod money to use on body mods I would just be using insurance cash (if possible).

Thanks
dubba you are ex 02-02-2005 10:19 AM

rice, plus the WRX hood is already light enough
paperchasin 02-02-2005 10:44 AM

^^werd...plus who the eff cares wut people think??
coldfire22x 02-02-2005 10:53 AM

i think that cf hood looks real good with the blue car/scoop ... that front bumper you mentioned is pretty sharp looking too.

and i'm definitely not a huge fan of a lot of the cosmetic mods that can and are done to cars these days. i just have very peculiar tastes
lumpy 02-02-2005 11:30 AM

To each his own...

I personally don't see the point on a Crystal Gray car that already has an aluminum hood.

How do you define rice? I say any thing that is added to a vehicle under the guise of a "performance part", but does not add any performance benefit to the car is rice.

The WRX still has an Aluminum hood right? So the CF is more for looks than performance - ergo "rice".

Doesn't mean it looks bad, though.

Its an easier choice when its Free ;)

Ya, I guess I should rephrase, if you didnt have a hood and could take the CF seibon hood or the stock hood which would you take?

Honestly, for my own tastes I would get a stock hood. That's just me though... :p

I far as I can see the hood was originally designed to save weight therefore increase the performance of the car. In this case the CF hood does not save weight and if you ask me does not look very good to begin with. Why would someone want to change just the color of your hood and not the rest of the car. Gives it an unfinished look or some may say RICE!!!
Yodaman 02-02-2005 05:52 PM

Felix 1357 owns a legacy GT
Ketchup 02-02-2005 07:03 PM

What happens if you get in an accedent. Wouldn't it shatter like glass and have the potential for greater injury?

Just wondering.

the STi that the_owl posted is amazing!
SubyDuz 02-02-2005 07:12 PM

:furious: CF Hoods look nice, but rice is as rice does, you know as long as you aren't rollin Chevy Cavalier with a CF hood then it isn't a bad thing. Subies with CF hoods and as long as the car is clean then it is worth the change. I switched to a CF hood when I installed a FMIC to vent the air out of the engine bay reverse scoop, so function was in order there, but still some say rice I say to each his own.
Akina 02-02-2005 08:45 PM
IBcfishardtodamage
CF = UN-Breakable! :furious:

And I'm a big fan of the Carby hood and trunk, all this crap about rice or not shouldn't make someones decision. If you do something like this you wont have an amazing weight gain, but say your replace your hood anyway because of hail damage (which I am) and I like the carby look more- plus I save a few hundred bucks on paint. So, just because a few members on a message board call it rice, I shouldn't do it?
Handsdown 02-02-2005 09:00 PM

if you'd actually do a little reading, no one's saying that you shouldn't get it if it looks rice...

a hood with a bad fitment and cosmetic blemishes with scoops and contrasting mesh all over it? yeah it might be rice... but i and MANY others have said 'if that's what you go for, go ahead and do it'

my car is a ricemobile... but i like it and i don't care what people on here say.

yeah i wish it was faster, but it's reliable and cheap so i'm fine with being slow.
greg donovan 02-03-2005 01:12 AM

as far as ins goes you will get a check for the amount of money it takes to get it back to the condition it was in before the accident. you can then do whatever you want as long as its fixed. so if you want a different bumper or hood all you have to do is pay the difference. i was going to put a 99 legacy GT bumper on my 95 L after i got in an accident but chose not to.

as far as the bank is concerned would they care if you put a custom body kit on w/out having an accident? no they probably dont.
JDMviola 02-03-2005 01:39 AM

PM me if you decide to go for the CF hood and want to get rid of your stock one. :)
PoopRSkupe 02-03-2005 12:58 PM

how about a vote for "boo-nany question"
w0rx4me 02-03-2005 10:17 PM

Some people define "rice" as any change to a vehicle that does not improve performance, but if that's the case then why do people choose the color of their car? Shouldn't all cars only be primed and clear-coated to prevent rusting then? No, of course not... we all pick out a color for our car because that's how we want our car to look. I like CF hoods and trunks because it adds a bold contrast, especially when your car is shiny and clean!

I like it, i got a CF hood and it looks nice.....my cars blue though.....looks like the black pins WRC WRX STi.....:)
White02WRX 02-04-2005 01:57 AM
