any idea how many spaces are open?
| Dan00Hawk | 01-04-2007 09:07 AM |
Registration is limited to 120 cars. There will be no more than 30 cars on the 4.2 mile track at a given time to help provide open spacing.
As registration has just opened, there are plenty of spots available. :)

it's tempting. i am going to think about it for a bit. I have never tracked my car in any way, so this would be completely new to me. i am assuming there will be experienced folks there willing to take a ride with me, correct?
where's a good place to get a nice helmet for not too much?

I'm also interested but wondering if we'll get instructors assigned to us. I've driven VIR and Summit Point but never Road America.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I think you'd have to rent an instructor to get one "assigned" to you, but there are quite a few very experienced racers there that are generally quite willing to let you ride with them and/or willing to ride with you.
The October session was the first time I had run my car (I'd been to three other MFBA weekends there) and it was a BLAST!!! I got the chance to ride with an instructor named Jeff, who has an '06 STi. After riding with him once I learned quite a bit. After running the following session by myself I got him to ride with me and learned more.
There are several very experienced STi/WRX drivers there and everyone's quite friendly.
Here is a Google Video links for one of the experienced STi guys (Nigel). He runs in the A group (most experienced). The video here is pretty fun to watch for heel/toe driving.

Any way I can guarantee a bit of instruction? I don't think I should go out on that track without learning a bit, either as I go, or a ride before I run.
| Fred Fredburger | 01-04-2007 12:37 PM |
I think you could get some leads if you PM'd Dan00Hawk or posted here to find out if they know the instructors and if you could contact one of them to reserve a session.
| Kegger | 01-04-2007 12:46 PM |
Crap! I'm going to Phoenix that weekend. If I can reschedule my trip, I'll be there for sure. This is one sweet track.
| Dan00Hawk | 01-04-2007 08:06 PM |
If you're a novice, you WILL get to go around with the instructors. You'll get a chance to meet the instructors (Jeff with the 06 STI is great, and the others are great as well) that morning, and then you'll certainly be able to have one of them go out with you for the first session for at least a few laps. There is no "rent" for the instructors, and they provide their advice for free. Just remember that they are there to have fun in their cars too, and that others will need their guidance as well. We don't want them to get sick of you! ;) There is also a "parade lap" for everyone before the course is opened up on Saturday morning. And as long as you have a helmet, most people are willing to give a ride around the course to demonstrate their technique (some more aggressively than others! :D ).
www.helmetcity.com has a number of Snell2000 helmets that are Motorcycle approved that will pass tech, and can be had for under $100. The automobile helmets (SA) are built to withstand multiple impacts (think rollbar), and are a bit pricier.
It's certainly a great track to experience! :)

Update: The instructors will be available to coach novices and ride along on Saturday morning. There isn't enough demand for the Fri night "basic instruction" dinner anymore. The hands-on instruction at the event is much more effective anyway. :)

Fred, was that you in the blue STi last session in October at RA? I was driving the silver '02 WRX. I am guessing that Jeff was in the gold STI. That was a lot of fun.
For anyone who has not been to this track before it is an absolute blast. I had driven in a number of touring events before I did open track days. Just take it slow at first and gradually build speed as you get more comfortable.
I met Nigel last April and he is a great guy to talk to and a good driver to boot. He was keeping up with some pretty fast company of Vette's and Vipers.

Dan00> Any word on the track progress?
pio> They do their best to let the cars out slow enough to fill up the whole track. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't... If you get behind a driver that's fast in the straights but slow in the corners the cars can back up a little bit. I had one session last October where I saw (and passed) ONE vehicle the whole 20 minutes. That was great... like having the whole track to myself!

Big piles of snowcovered dirt right now. You can see pics of how far they've gotten on their site. The Bridge is gone and the embankments are regraded. The tunnel is dug out and the frame of it is going into place. But with the cool temperatures they have slowed WAY down.

The track has assured us that construction will be COMPLETE and the ENTIRE TRACK WILL BE OPEN for our event.
Temps can dip into the 30's at night in mid April, but any snow wouldn't stick since the ground will be warm by then. We've not had to cancel any events since we started in 2001. You can decide yourself to cancel prior to the event and get a refund or use it as a deposit for a future event.

Yep, got it tuned by Jorge. I had an appointment scheduled in March but he had to cancel (sick kid) so he was kind enough to tune me on Good Friday, when they were supposed to be closed (so it really was Good Friday for me!)
I got there with a base Stage 2 on my UTEC putting down 276/274 @ < 10:1. I left with 299/322 @ 12:1 (+8% hp, +17.5% tq). :banana::banana::banana:

And it figures, I took off my Blizzaks and put on my summer wheels/tires (along with some EBC Yellow Stuff pads) the day before it snowed here in WI.
I'm pumped and ready for the track!!!!
I'll be #257 so stop by and say hi!
