Shift knob recommendations?
Subie-folk,
I'm looking for a shift knob upgrade for my WRX wagon. The stock knob is too small and doesn't fit the palm of my hand very well. I'm looking for something larger and heavier. The OZ racing knob is okay but I would prefer something that's leather-wrapped, although absent any other choices, I'll go with that one. I hate the Subaru carbon fiber and titanium knobs.
Any other recommendations? Can I nab a UUC shift knob for Audi and use it on my WRX?

Momo makes a nice one and it will match the steering wheel (if you have a WRX)
Also prodrive has a nice knob.
I think there are group buys on both of them in the group buy forum.

Ruz... how does it fit? any slipage? .. was it a pain to install ? thanks..

fits really well, although I did get the Momo Boot sleeve too...I had the subaru guys install it when they put in my short shifter, but they said they didn't have any major problems other than the boot sleeve was a little too big...
It's fit it nice and solid, absolutely so sliping at all...it's attached with 3 set screws to the stick...

I once fitted a MOMO Race Airleather to my '98 WRX wagon. The design made it a perfect match to my steering wheel and while it scored high marks in the aesthetics department, usability was another matter. I found the size a tad too big for my palm resulting in a loss of "feel" and a bit unnerving that the entire assembly is fastened by just three hex screws. Within a matter of days, I switched back to the factory item ;)

The pic above is the Momo one I was talking about, I have only seen it once and it did seem a bit big.
Kartboy has a nice shifter that I may get someday. They aren't leather but look really good. And you don't have to attach it with screws or need a shift boot sleeve!

I have the Momo shift-knob - the leather/aluminum version - and like it a LOT. It looks great and is a perfect match for the Momo steering wheel. I bought it over in the vendor forum.

Same here, the race airleather is a great compliment to the interior. I have a lot more faith in mine than Jan did in his, mostly because I sunk the mounting screws into the aluminum shaft of the BPM short shifter I installed and use loctite to keep them in place. 3000 miles and no problems yet.

Prodrive makes a good knob! if you want a black one then look in the private classified and there is a G/B going on right now for a special production one. Also the Kartboy one looks really good!

Prodrive knob
The Prodrive knob in silver or blue looks really nice! Also, it's designed for Scoobies so it screws right on. No messing with set screws, slumping shift boots, etc.
I've ordered the silver one and I'd love to recommend it...but I don't actually have it yet. Delay in shipping means they are stilll 3-4 weeks out still. :(
Argh, the wait! :p

I use a Razo aluminum ball. I love it.

Count me as another vote for the Momo race airleather line.
I've got mine half black leather, half blue aluminum, and it's beautiful and feels perfect in the palm of my hand.

The Karboy short shifter looks like it sits lower than the stock stick. Is that true or am I imagining it? If it is true, what is the difference?
Thanks,
David

The Kartboy does sit lower than the stock shifter (hence the name "short" shifter). It's VERY slightly harder to shift, but the shifts are WAY shorter. Shorter shifts = faster shifts. Fun stuff for sure. I highly recommend it. I also have my knob pushed all the way down. If you wanted it slightly higher, you could not jam the knob down like I did.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that for me.
Cheers!

I know this is a low-quality picture of my WRX's interior, but you get the idea. As others have said before, this shifter should have been from the factory.

Just got my MOMO Racair Leather tonite, which is like the (MOMO) one pictured above, but with leather on the lower half of the knob instead of aluminum. It gets hot here in the summer, and I didn't want to contend with a hot shifter after being in the sun all day.
Install took about 10 minutes. The knob attaches with 3 set-screws that taper down to a point. This allows the screws to slot into the threads on the shift lever. Assuming you get equal penetration on all 3 screws (which happens by you turning each screw an equal amount until all are seated,) I can't see how you would ever have a problem with the thing coming off. Well, maybe if you beat on it like WRC for 10 years... ;)
The styling compliments the WRX interior perfectly, and the feel of this thing is great! Kinda like going from a 1970's vintage Pontiac 1/4" diameter plastic steering wheel to a thick, meaty, leather-wrapped steering wheel. It just feels so much better than the stocker.
Ordered mine Thursday, and got it an hour ago. $61 shipped from Auto Innovations. The price is good thru 12/31, so get 'em while you can!!
