Smaller steering wheel ? part 1

Converted 03-05-2006 08:10 PM

Smaller steering wheel ?
Does anyone have a smaller steering wheel ?

I dont prefer how ours is so extremely large....its kinda ridiculous.....

Its got to have a air bag, so maybe one of the STi's from previous years had a smaller steering wheel

any help is appreciative !
IIdiceII 03-05-2006 08:18 PM

I think the older spec-c or RA steering wheel is smaller. its a 3-spoke design but it doesnt have an airbag. search aftermarket steering wheels. I think there is a thread on this subject already.
THEW0RX 03-05-2006 09:09 PM

get a wheel off of an s2000 and just remove the center emblem. Those things are about half the diameter.

I think it's perfect.
AlBlueCar 03-05-2006 09:53 PM

An S2000 wheel would fit the bill nicely. Wonder how much work is needed to make sure it fits and the airbag will work...
Converted 03-05-2006 10:45 PM

if you prefer a very large steering wheel, its perfect. I dont.

I like the smaller EVO 8, M3 type steering wheels, i think you can driver better with them, for me, it is easier to control and manuever !
garface 03-06-2006 11:30 AM

The only smaller Subaru wheel with an airbag is the 04+ STi steering wheels and 05+ WRX/Legacy steering wheels(maybe Forester too I would guess). And that is only 375mm vs. 385mm. It does feel nicer though.
APS04silverwrx 03-06-2006 12:13 PM

I have a momo compettion steering wheel with hub assemnbly its nice but no aribag, but matches nicely. But yeah someone should definetly do the s2000 steering wheel swap and post, that would be cool.
THEW0RX 03-06-2006 05:21 PM

An s2000 wheel would be ideal. If you look at a pic of one (which im too lazy to post) the leather patterns are almost identical to the wrx wheel. I would do a swap with my s2k but i dont think the wrx wheel would fit inside of it. Plus, then i'd be stuck with a large steering wheel in a very small car.
gjhsu 03-06-2006 05:58 PM

For some reason the Legacy GT steering wheel feels smaller to me. May just be the different covering they put on it, but I like it.
john_matrix 03-06-2006 08:20 PM

I didn't realize the 2004 sti one was smaller.

I'm pretty sure that's what the 92x has. It looks exactly the same (except for the sti part), not sure if it is indeed the same wheel though.
Brahmzy 03-06-2006 09:36 PM

I think my '05 STi wheel is HUGE! I hate it, ugh. It would be more tolerable with a quicker rack. I REALLY want a quicker rack.

I think it's an illusion. If you sit in the back seat it actually looks quite small. Also, if you let someone else drive, and you're in the passenger seat, it looks small too.
AlBlueCar 03-06-2006 10:45 PM

I'll take it off your hands for you if you really don't like it....

if you stand 20 feet away, it looks even smaller. why let someone else drive? :alien:

I knew someone was going to say this.

It appears to be large when driving but i've noticed when my brother drove mine, the steering wheel looks pretty small. I don't think it's that big actually.
Mr. Sadface 03-06-2006 11:13 PM

It's not a Suby, but... I run a Sparco Lap 3 wheel on my Nissan Primera. It's much more fun to drive now (and easier to control).
o2sys 03-07-2006 12:49 PM

Actually compared each and single one of them (lots of friends with subies) and know this info as a fact from largest diameter to smallest

02-03 RS > 02-04 WRX > 05-06 WRX ~ 04 STI > 05-06 WRX STI
garface 03-07-2006 12:57 PM

People are crazy with these measurements. They're all 385mm prior to the 04 STi. 2004, 05, 06 STi are all identical at 375mm. I've had them all off the car in front of me laying on top of eachother face to face.

My 2000 RS wheel is the same size as an 04 WRX wheel. All the momo-in-the-middle wheels are the same also.

05-06 WRX is the same diameter as 04, 05, 06 STi and actually the same exact wheel with different stitching and material.

Look at the factory service manuals and take your own advice. ;)

And what exactly is wrong with my info. Pleae be specific if possible.

Please do so. I always look forward to being corrected. And don't cop out, I want pics as soon as possible.

cop out? haha lets not get too serios here buddy...if im wrong i will admit im wrong but i am 110% that 02-03 RS steering wheel is bigger than 02-04 MOMO WRX wheel and the 04 STi is similar if not the same size to 02-04 WRX and the 05 STi is definatly smaller than my 05 WRX wheel and the all the rest above. Which is the one i have on my car as of now
UltimateLurker 03-07-2006 01:28 PM

Wow, it's usually "my **** is bigger than your ****!"

I'm not serious at all. I just really want someone to take pics. Nobody ever does. Not even trying to argue, I just want you to take pics and not post later saying you forgot or can't because I'm looking forward to someone finally doing it.

04 STi wheel is smaller than the 02-04 WRX wheel and exactly the same as the 05 STi wheel.

You're saying your 02-03 RS wheel is bigger than the 02-04 WRX wheel, but even the 98-01 RS wheel is the same size as the 04 WRX wheel, so that wouldn't make sense.

You say 05 STi wheel is definately smaller than the 05 WRX wheel, but they're the same wheel from everything I have seen. You can even swap the airbag section between the 2. My mom's 05 Legacy has the same size and style steering wheel as the 05-06 STi and her wheel is the same as the newer Impreza wheels.

Who cares, JDM VGS S2K wheel FTW.

can someone photochop an s2000 wheel into a wrx? And possibly take out the center honda emblem. I think it would look good.

I dunno, I was just thinking mine looks kinda big. But...if it shrank any, I think it would obscure the gauges.

I second the Legacy wheel being the best. If the wheel seems too large, I would wrap the wheel with another layer of leather and padding. It will make the wheel thicker, and hence larger, but it may SEEM smaller due to the thickness improvement.

wow thats hot
dantastic 03-10-2006 02:02 PM

i wouldnt go around swapping in an airbag equipped wheel from another car, that was designed & engineered for another car. i think the 3-spoke momo in my 05 wrx is one of the best factory wheels out there. the s2k is pretty nice, and tiny. with a super quick rack, it's really darty on So Cal freeways. miata Nardi wheels are nice too. i've never driven a late model ferrari, but their wheels are sick.
BIGSKYWRX 03-10-2006 11:06 PM

I can tell you w/ certainity that all WRX's 02-06 are the same- 385mm, all Impreza RS 02-06 are the same 385mm, all USDM STi's 04-06 are the same 375mm- this info comes directly from the FSM's.

That should cut down on the pics you need to post :)
LowUFO 03-11-2006 01:22 AM

Whatever. All the oem wheels are still too big. I threw in a 320mm Momo Millennium Evo wheel and it was too small. The gauge cluster indicator lights and top of the speedo were obscured. I'm 6'2". So maybe someone a bit shorter wouldn't have the same problem, but I took it out and threw in a 350mm Momo Jet wheel. Way better. No airbag, but the size is perfect.
couchflambeau 03-11-2006 02:25 AM

this one's pretty small.....

Note the Coors....

Now that wheel makes sense...
