So I broke down and bought a set of MXs

After driving a 45 second course on a 80 degree day with the Azenis and coming off course with 120 degree tire temps, I realized "self, these aren't going to work for a codriven car and Pro Solos".
Got a set of MXs on the way. Thankfully we have the ability to do some great concrete testing this weekend and we should have a be all, end all MX vs. Azenis test this weekend. I wonder what we'll find time wise between the two.

Despite my race tire dedication ( though STU does sound fun  ) I'm curious to hear your results...
EDIT : ...and now I have all week to think about it. Thanks!

Planning on shaving the Kuhmos? Azenis win hands down at full-tread. It's from 4/32nds on that the Kuhmos get good.

We're going to try the "shaving naturally" method. These won't be the set we would use for nationals, and we're going to make a TON of runs on these this weekend, so I think we can wear them down to 4/32s no problem. I spoke to a couple of kumho techs and they told me they thought the azenis was a better tire then the kumho. Kinda funny there. They also mentioned that there should not be any hardening up or heat cycling issues in one weekend. If you wore them down over a long period of time, they think the tire could harden up a tad, but wearing them down over 1 day should't put enough heat cycles on them to do anything.

...and what's the fun in that? :D
Not like you street tired kids even have to worry about little old me. The only way I can get to STX is detune the integra I have sitting in the garage from SP trim (granted that is the same route I'll have to take with the car to make it legal for the Honda-Challenge). Certainly not MY idea of fun... especially when I have bigger fish to fry in A-Stock.
I see how its gonna be...
I can play that way too...
ITS ON NOW! :disco:
I've been on this board for about 4 months now and I still have no idea what the disco monkey means!!!!

fortunetly, under autocross situations the 4/32 rules comes into play only after a few short runs. The longer you run the tire, the more even the tread depth will be.
the lingering question is will the outside fold-away sidewall hold up until the inside edge has the optimum 4/32 tread depth

So now, even though I ordered them, I'm considering cancelling it
I still got joel's advice of "they are worthless full tread" and am thinking that I might hate them so much while trying to shave them, that I will give up on them.
I think I might perform some azenis heat testing this weekend instead...........

i couldn't get mine hot enough over the weekend even codriving both days, but realize it's not been into the 70's here at all until our Test N Tune on Sat.
Todd killed us on Sunday, but we're still happy to have been somewhat close for awhile. Having no idea where we were with a new suspension and new tires we felt it wasn't too bad. Todd had sticker Azenis he was breaking in so we were kinda in the same boat there, but i don't know that he's changed much since last season with the rest of the car. mine's a totally new car it seems. between coilovers and a little weight redistribution it was nothing like last year.
For the record it was low 70's, sunny and not so sticky asphalt. We were .4 and .7 back from Todd on Sat, and got whipped on Sun. My codriver was ~1 sec back and I coned all 4 runs.
The course was a little more in the Type R's favor, but had it not been for a final hairpin, turbo killing corner we should have been within a couple tenths on Sunday.
We've got 2 events in back to back weekends coming up so we'll see what a completely different setup (proper rear spring lengths) and a new potentially competitive tire have in store for us. We'll be running the new tire on the 2nd and back to the MX's on the 9th.

FWIW - I was talking with Andy Hollis in Topeka a couple weeks ago, and he believes it's likely the SEB will ban the Hankook Z212's from Nationals, assuming Hankook actually releases them in time. The concern is that Hankook won't have a ready supply available, or will only have limited sizes that could create an unfair advantage.

If they have the same amt of sizes as the Azenis... they should be legal.
Also, if you talk to him again soon, and it's a case of tire availablity, that one 140 pirelli corsa should be excluded since it has only one size in 140 and the rest 60.

I could see how the concern would be with "readily available" rather then "sizes available" on the Hancooks. They are for ST, and will have a variety of 15 and 16" tires available. 99% of ST* cars can use 15 or 16" wheels.
As far as the Pirellis, I agree with KC, only 1 size available, BANNINATE!

No kidding, why did Pirelli do that?
-Steve
p.s. In talking with Andy, I believe there are two concerns:
1. Extremely limited size availability (like 1 or 2 sizes that only work on a limited number of cars).
2. Extremely limited supply, so that only "favored/sponsored" drivers can get them. I believe this is the bigger concern - and I believe the SCCA has acted to exclude tires on these grounds in the past.

So to rehash a little.
We punted on the MXs and stuck to "heat testing" the azenis.
I did 6 30 second runs hotlapped (no breaks at all) on the azenis on a 75 degree day. Got them up to 152 outside, 156 inside. I lost about 2 tenths on that last run and I felt like I overdrove the car rather then the tires giving out   Car felt pretty good the whole time and maybe the tires got a "tad" greasy on feel, but I didn't think the time went down any......
I agree with what a very good driver told me about the tires this weekend. When they get hot the *feel* goes away a bit and the tire gets MUCH less forgiving. If you overdrive into a turn, they will not save you like a cold azenis. If you continue to drive smooth though, the ultimate grip level is pretty much the same

Exactly. And now after seeing that the azenis do work pretty well "warm", I did the right thing. I think it will be VERY VERY hard to get the tires over 150 degrees as you get at least 30-60 seconds between your prosolo runs.
