GoodFinder 03-31-2003 12:12 PM

Subarus in One Lap of America
I just did a quick check of the current entrants and there are 5 Subaru teams listed. Wow!

Some of us from "TXIC" will be sure to make the trek to see the Tuesday, May 6th events in Oklahoma.

Looking forward to it!

Its going to be tough taking out the Evos, but Im sure going to try :) There is *supposed* to be a pretty much fully rally Evo out there this year from what I have heard.

That "lap of america" seems kind of small  You don't even come close to the continental divide!

still looks like fun.

Yeah but the west coast has the OTC (open track challenge).

One Lap Wagon Update:
Track day at Moroso went beautifully. I used an entire tank of gas and tortured the little wagon, but other than some slightly warped stock rotors, it was smooth sailing. Moroso has 4 hard braking zones and the TXS stage 4 was too much for the stock rotors. New rotors will be arriving shortly.

The wagon breezed by all kinds of big dollar machines and created quite a few new Subaru fans. Although I must admit that the Ferrari F355 Challenge and race prepped Porsche GT3 were giving me trouble. Cant wait until may.
Puckaveli 03-31-2003 04:02 PM

5600 miles, 20 states, 10 tracks is kind small?
RyanC 03-31-2003 04:17 PM

Luckily all you Subaru guys aren't SSGT1, otherwise I'd have to kick all your asses for a class win. As it is, I'll have to beat you all for overall positions. See you in May, ladies!

Show up at the track with a cold soda and a candy bar for the competitors. Being on a tight schedule, stopping to get some of the most elementary of items takes a backseat to the racing going on. I guarantee they'll appreciate it.
5600 miles, 20 states, 10 tracks is kind small?
Yeah, compared to 2002 it is. That doesn't mean that I don't wish I was there however.

Somebody bring this bloke a can of cheeze whiz or something. :) On a more serious note, if you get the chance to caravan with Mr. Catucci here I would highly recommend it. He is certainly someone that you'll want by your side if you encounter complications; whether they be automotive or bar-fight related.

Best of luck to all the teams, especially Anthony DiMattia and Greg Paules.

I'll see all of you at The Tire Rack's Skid Pad Challenge on May 4th

I'm trying to get sponsored now, for the 2004 One lap....I can't do it this year because I have finals that week, and I'm graduating from RPI....hehe

Good luck guys, and let me know how it goes and everything :)
trhoppe 04-16-2003 10:18 AM

Here is a pic of what the sticker *will* look like :) when it gets back from the dealership one day. Just have to put a few coats of Zaino on and slap the stickers on it.

what tires are you guys running? I just read over the rules, and it looks like you are going to need something that will take a beating.
no_rex_yet 04-16-2003 03:29 PM

awesome cars guys! good luck and be sure to smack some evos around :D
lukerussell 04-16-2003 04:35 PM

you have a choice from 8 brands and they have to be street tires and you have to buy them from tire rack. i went with the cheapest ultra mega performance category ones available, which were the kumho ecsta mx. i can only fit 225's, some of the sedan dudes will be running 245's.

Luke
trhoppe 04-16-2003 04:38 PM

Same here (kumho mx), but in a slightly bigger then 225 size

What will we do with all that grip? How are you supposed to drift on MX's? Tom, I thought we were running RE92's??  ;)
trhoppe 04-16-2003 06:34 PM

Same way I drift on my KDs, you just have to be going twice as fast

If One Lap was in February, we would have taken the RE92s :)

ForceFed4 04-16-2003 07:28 PM

Are the events open to public spectating? I'm only about 20 minutes from The Glen (in Ithaca), might be fun to see the action.

The Glen website doesn't say anything about the event, so I hafve no idea of the schedule, or if it's even open.
RyanC 04-16-2003 11:18 PM

To get into the Glen, you have to be on someones guest list I think. There's a note about it on the One Lap web site, maybe in the forums?
I'm also running the MXs, they're very good on the track. 235/45 fronts and 275/40s rear.

Luke, Very nice looking wagon!! Will you be posting progress here? Do you have a website that you'll post to? Are you running stock wheels for this event?

Tom, Nice to to see pics of your ride as well!

Any other pictures of WRX entries??
lukerussell 04-21-2003 09:06 AM

i'll be running my gold subzeros for one lap. i won't be updating progress daily, i don't think i'll have the time or equipment to do that. i have website space, and i've typed what i want on it, i just haven't given it to my website guy to make all pretty and publish it. i'll probably just wait until after the one lap and publish the whole experience at once.
Luke
lukerussell 04-21-2003 09:16 AM

4/19/03 update from sebring:
what a sucky day. the car was fast and hooked up as usual. i didn't get much track time, but the only car that passed me was a brand new race prepared 911 GT3. now for the bad news. my brake consist of stainless steel lines, motul 600 fluid, ebc red stuff pads. they worked great until moroso when they warped the stock rotors. i ordered the new ebc rotors that are specially formulated to work with the red stuff pads. i had new pads, new rotors and had them broken in properly. going down the long straight between turns 16 and 17 (125 mph), i hit the brakes and there was nothing there. luckily there is a huge concrete run off area and i left the track about 500 feet before i stopped (thanks to brake pumping and the e-brake that allowed me to spin sideways to scrub speed). i stopped about 2 feet in front of the tire barrier. ends up the ebc rotors ate the ebc pads. when i pulled the calliper out, the pads either crumbled out or no longer existed.

Time to call Stop Tech.

Luke
lukerussell 04-29-2003 09:54 AM

They assigned numbers. Your number is basically your rank, but there are a few exceptions (you can beg for a certain number and they may give it to you). They ranked us 63 out of 84 cars. We are the last WRX and 15 out of 16 in mid price sedans (they ranked us ahead of the Caprice). I guess we're the underdog.

Luke
trhoppe 04-29-2003 10:06 AM

Woohoo, we are 7 out of 16. The top half baby  I have no idea how they do the rankings though. Maybe its because my car is blue and blue is fast. Yellow is faster also, and thats why the SRT4 is in front of me

I dunno how they rank them, but I'm going to call and see if I can be 55 instead of 56 :) 5 is my lucky number!

Tom you better not get r0lled by the SRT-4! You will never live it down ;)
lukerussell 04-29-2003 12:10 PM

don't worry, i now have stop tech with a variety of pads to try out. ebc is the devil as that set up failed at Sebring thanks to their products. i'll post my story and will probably put together a web site when i get back. i leave early tomorrow from FL and drive 17 hours solo to Turbo XS in Maryland. they're going to do a little tweaking on Thursday. Then I drive to Baltimore to pick up my "partner in crime" (co-driver). We should be in NY late Thursday ready to sign in on Friday, apply more decals and attend the driver's meeting and have a beer(s). Watkins Glen is Saturday.

The domokun on the front fender should be AWESOME.

-Tom
lukerussell 04-29-2003 03:14 PM

power -
straight up turbo xs stage 4 kit. and a k&n filter. that's it. i went from bone stock to that, so i didn't get to pick and choose components. i looked at your 1/4 mile time and I haven't even come close to a 13.2. i did have 10 mph on you at the trap speed. the car just doesn't seem to go until 3rd and 4th gear.
trhoppe 04-29-2003 03:31 PM

Damn! 10mph! You have about 50hp on me and about 30lbs of torque. Thats quite a bit!

I should be running around a 12.8 or 12.9 with the ECUtek setup, but only with a 103 or 104 trap speed. You will be whoopin my butt on the straights. Hopefully I will have you in the turns ;) What kind of suspension stuff do you have? I have Teins, with whiteline swaybars and camber plates.

-Tom
lukerussell 04-29-2003 04:03 PM

they changed that evo guy and did something else (i'm not quite sure what), but i'm now ranked 16 of 18, ahead of the impala and the caprice. i have dms 50mm, whiteline adj. rear. no $$ or time to do the camber plates.

maybe if i took my 22's w/ spinners off, i'd get a better 1/4 mile.
trhoppe 04-29-2003 04:20 PM

 I was actually thinking of trying to find some spinners for my Rotas. I lost the center caps, and don't have anything there. I wanted some chrome on the car!!!

This should be a lot of fun then Luke, you have me WAY beat in the straights, but I should be able to take you in the turns :)

They did make me #55, sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

-Tom

Goodfinder,

You are living up to your name! Thanks for the updates!

Maybe Tom didn't have Luke in the corners afterall... ;) Wagons

They both are doing great though!!!
driggity 05-05-2003 08:16 PM

Updated scores through Sunday are up.

http://www.onelapofamerica.com/History/2003/

Subarus in 16, 23, 35, 56, 63. If Tom hadn't had the transmission problems he'd probably up in the high teens/low twenties instead of at 35.
trhoppe 05-06-2003 02:10 AM
Maybe Tom didn't have Luke in the corners afterall...
Oh I think I got him in the corners allright, but he kicks some MAJOR booty on the straights :)

Yup, if the tranny didnt go, I would be probably 50-60points behind luke and about 17-18 overall instead of 31stb. Oh well. Sheit happens. I'm shooting for Top 5 in class and Top 25 overall now. Pretty good goal IMHO considering what happened.

Today was VERY messy in the wet, rain, and fog. I was very careful as we spent a lot of time last night getting this car back together, and I was not going to put it off. Because of that, I finished way back, but I finished. Pretty good considering we were putting in the transmission 10 hours before we ran the event, and 5 hours of that was spent driving to the race track :)

Luke is doing great and hopefully he can hold on to 2nd. 1st is out of reach unless something happens to the allmighty neon

-Tom
scotto 05-06-2003 03:15 PM

Transmission fix: Where are those Prodrive guys when you really need them? 20 minute tranny change standard procedure in the WRC!

Great you could get your car back up to speed Tom :) What went in your tranny?

Keep it up Luke!
