SPT V-limited... part 1

EnterTheDragon 08-02-2006 06:01 PM

SPT V-limited...
I emailed SOA asking if the introduction of the 07 STi Limited would make the v-limited lip any more accessible and cheaper here in the US. Here's their response.

Our Subaru Performance Tuning (SPT) division is working on making the v-limited
style lip available for 2006 models as an upgrade/option. However, we do not
have final approvals, certifications, etc. We do not have an exact time frame
or estimated pricing, however, we should know more within a month or two.

If you have any other questions, do not hesitate to reply to this email!

Best wishes,

Samir Hasan

meeee toooo
Hondaslayer 08-02-2006 08:01 PM

For some odd reason SOA finds it necessary to do crash testing for add on body parts.

Not sure why,and it makes no sense, just what I was told.

It doesn't necessarily have to be sold through SPT to get one if it is a part on a stock vehicle does it? You should be able to walk right up to the parts counter and ask for one whether it is in the SPT catalog or not.

Somewhere between $1 and $10,000

CynicX 08-05-2006 02:30 PM

ugh...sold through SPT? Probably be 20 dollars cheaper then ordering it JDM...
ugh...sold through SPT? Probably be 20 dollars cheaper then ordering it JDM...
wanna make a bet on that ? :)

the part should not be an SPT part.
it will be "OEM" Replacement

the only issue i foresee is that the car is a limited edition
thus, there may not be huge quantities to go around

and/or

Subaru may require a LTD STi vin # in order to obtain the part

we shall have to wait, and see.
EnterTheDragon 08-05-2006 02:54 PM

the email from soa makes the second seem null...hopefully
Subie Gal 08-05-2006 02:55 PM

we will see soon enough :)

Well I wouldnt bet against you on this subject...but Subaru OEM prices for people like me to walk in off the street isnt by any means cheap, as are all car manufactors...

How much is the JDM lip? Like 500 to 550 depending on who you purchase it from. Which seams on par to other pieces of ABS plastic  So I'll guess around 400+ from Subaru if I were to walk in off the street.

I hope with the influx of lips to the states aftermarket companies will be able to get their hands on them rather then having to go JDM. Thus dropping the price. I hope anyway, I also hope they are exactly the same as the JDM versions they look the same from all the pics I've seen though.

This is the one piece I havent splurged on since I knew it was coming here. Hopefully I wont be let down. :)
TreyS 08-05-2006 11:38 PM

The 2004 OEM JDM V-Limited was very a flimsy part and not worth $50 IMO. Yes I said $50. It's a ripoff. I can't imagine the 2006 one being any better.
EnterTheDragon 08-06-2006 12:10 AM

It's a piece of hollow plastic, which is why I haven't paid $500 for it. Hopefully the price reflects what it really is. How come replicators dont use palstic themselves?

i love the way it looks but i totally agree, i really dont seeing this lip being offered for too long after, most people crack it while parking, and want it to be replaced.
CynicX 08-06-2006 01:25 PM

In my searches I found japanparts.com has it for 350ish...Thats alot better then the aftermarket vendors with their 500+....

I'd probably settle for 200ish from SPT if its a real STI V-Limited lip with the badge in the middle...
jmanrex 08-06-2006 02:41 PM

Thanks for the update Jamie!

Too bad those other parts only come in those 3 colors.
STiShawn 08-18-2006 02:31 PM

but the grey or black will look good on most cars, the items are small enough as well that color matching wont be too expensive
EnterTheDragon 10-09-2006 08:56 PM

bump for updates
Big-E 10-10-2006 08:27 AM

The rear lip spoiler from the STI limited is available online in the US.

It's listed at approximately $239.00; and I will post the link later.

just checked at the dealer on the price of the front lip yesterday...$495.:(

^^^^^^ Much better buy!^^^^^^^ This is what i will be getting, it's half the price! Plus, the lip will get torn up from the stones and inclines so why spend top dollar?
EnterTheDragon 12-23-2006 12:36 AM

because any fitment issue, defect, or miscoloration would drive me crazy.

Im not sure if its that replica, but someone mentioned having to sand it and spray it to get an oem look, and some replicas have had fitment issues.

I'd prefer the oem plastic to fiberglass.

back to the thread topic, I once emailed SPT and they said they were making a verison of the lip..and without the STi badging it would be much cheaper

i.e. oem 06 fog covers $80, same oem fog covers with sti decals $120+

Bump for any info on the SPT v-limited lip
nhluhr 12-27-2006 03:57 AM

The lip is now available from subaru parts dealers:
https://www.subarugenuineparts.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_95&products_id=1137 $445

Installation requires drilling several 3/8" holes and two 3/32" holes in the bottom of the bumper skin. I just did mine (although mine was 'genuine jdm') last thursday. It is extremely easy, you just have to remove the plastic clips that hold the mudguard to the front bumper, put the lip in place, secure it with the clips, mark all the holes with a black Sharpie, remove the lip, drill the holes, push in the rubber mounting bosses, put the lip back in place, screw the lip in, replace pop-clips. Took me about 30 minutes working with japanese install instructions which I couldn't read.
EnterTheDragon 12-27-2006 10:30 AM

That's still the STi version, subaru can keep the $100 little silver badging.
STiShawn 12-27-2006 10:39 AM

christ thats expensive...but I soooo want it.
El Capitan 12-27-2006 10:59 AM

$425.00 For a peice of thin molded plastic? Thats like 1/75th the Price of an entire STi ! I know subaru and the vendors need to make money but sheesh thats a little high. I'm currious what the mark up from the manufacturer to the final vendor is.

a LOT. ABS plastic is ludicrisly cheep, and since they already have the tooling payed for from the times they've used it on production cars, I'd say it costs them around $15 to make that lip.
STiShawn 12-27-2006 02:51 PM

^ bingo....
I'll make my own damn lip

EnterTheDragon 12-27-2006 08:48 PM

ok...I'll clarify.

This is about SPT making a v-limited lip and not STi
nhluhr 12-27-2006 08:51 PM

SPT doesn't "make" any parts. They contract to have them made or rebadge/import them if they are already made and since Subaru-Japan (STI) already makes them, there's no reason to make a new injection mold.

The lip that comes on the 2007 Limited is identical in every aspect to the jdm V Limited lip, right down to the little metal plate that says "STI".

You guys are saying the same thing nhluhr. What EnterTheDragon is hoping, is that SPT would offer the same lip without the badging and markup associated with the STi badging. Perhaps with an SPT badge...and a smaller price tag than the current one.

This was the route I went, and after sanding and painting, the install was a breeze and fitment was perfect. Definitely recommend this for the money. After a little work on it looks great. They even sell the little STi decal.

what did you paint it with?

I'm borderline on how I feel about having to sand and paint it.

Someone needs to make a urethane version :)
jmhubbard01 12-27-2006 09:40 PM

Any good quality satin/flat black spray paint in many many thin coats...I used Rust-Oleum Satin black. You have to sand it down well and clean it first though. Holding up well so far, but like others have said, it's half the price and I expect I'll mess this one up one day. The fiberglass work was pretty good, but the finish was pretty ding'd up in their bulk order shipments from the mnf. However, it was packaged well to me from fastwrx.com.
