STi projection headlights for 02-03 Pics
Does anyone have any pics of the STi projection for the 02-03 models?
PsiRRizzed247 03-11-2003 10:39 AM

have you tried a search? there are dozens of threads on these headlites and pics... or try members gallery :)
gersh10 03-11-2003 10:49 AM

I tried that what should I put into the search line?
MAD REX 03-11-2003 11:23 AM

Just look in the Members Car Gallery forum.

Search through the long pic threads you'll see tons of pics.
no_rex_yet 03-11-2003 11:28 AM

how about, uh "sti projectors"? i found a bunch just doing that search in the member's gallery.

I guess learning to spell would be nice I found a lot of pics. So do the STi projectors look like the JDMs?
128d 03-11-2003 05:37 PM

Same thing.
View Askew 03-11-2003 06:15 PM

Since nobody is posting any, I'll put mine up. :o

But yes, you can find a TON in the member gallery.

JDM = Japanese Domestic Market/right hand drive
EDM = European Domestic Market/left hand drive
USDM = ...you get the picture. :)

The STi headlights come in both JDM and EDM markets.
gersh10 03-12-2003 09:45 AM

God that silver and carbon looks awesome! Do you have full pics somewhere?
Thanks for the pic and the info. I didn't realize they were the same. Can you get that in all crome? I like that bug eye all glass look up front with the big driving lights. Also is it look or do you really get that much more light if you go HID, I know there is info out in other postings but since we are here, and what kind of light do you get with the non HIDs in case I have to do it in stages. I'm a freak about light the more the better and I've heard that your high beams don't give you as much light as the high beams on the stock lights, that would bother me becouse I like to play in the mountains and want that reach out and touch someone power. Are they plug and play, and lastly which lights put off more/better light JDMs or the Morettes?

Thanks all, I appreciate the help.
no_rex_yet 03-12-2003 10:20 AM

With the standard halogen bulbs, my EDM (left hand drive light pattern) projectors, did not provide very good low beam lighting at all; while the pattern was very evenly distributed, it was very dim and washed out.

However, I have gone through a few sets of H1 bulbs, and found that HKS Powerbeams (made by Koito) provide very good lighting. If you get the projectors, I would recommend getting some new bulbs, such as HKS, or Phillips Xtravision. I also tried a set of Hella +30 bulbs--they were better than stock, but not as good as the HKS. The HKS's are so good, that I am no longer considering HID at the moment.

Lastly, whoever told you the projector high beams throw less light than the stock housings is a moron. The projectors have separate bulbs for high and low, where as the stock housing uses a single bulb for both. Thus, the projector high beams are an incredible improvement over stock, regardless of bulbs.
gersh10 03-12-2003 12:40 PM

Sounds great. So does HKS make a bulb for the stock housing? And where could I get a set? What kind of road coverage do you get with the projectors? I have never been in a car that had them, and after having a dear commit suicide with my last car I like a little ditch coverage.

These are all over NASIOC. If you search on 'projector' you'll probally find someone with the same color car to you.

My lights are aimed with drivers side down and align up to the passengers low
****___/
___/

instead of ___/___/

(asterick to align beam pattern for this post)

and I get good low beam on road, side of road and obviously in front. This was what the BMW and AUDI dealers told me how they do theirs. I have upgraded to Vision Plus bulbs to give the cleaner white look and haven't had any problems with these. The RHD aimed how I did mine would blind all on coming cars.
gersh10 03-12-2003 02:36 PM

Looks great.

So its sounding like they are a pain to adjust? What is this leveling switch I've read about?

Thats how mine are. :D
no_rex_yet 03-12-2003 04:15 PM

i ordered the hks bulbs from www.hksusa.com

for the stock housings, i found hella upgrade bulbs to be very good -- purchased at www.rallylights.com -- these are the standard halogen bulbs, not the "xenon" ones.

i was a bit skeptical of the hks bulbs b/c the have a slight blue tinge to the lense, but they turned out great. i would still prefer a non tinted bulb, but these work very well. i had ordered a set of vision plus from a UK company, but they sent me a set of H4 bluevision bulbs instead of H1 vision plus  i still need to send those back to them.

as for pattern, the EDM lights have awesome coverage; they really light up the right side of the road very well. this is with my beams properly adjusted at:

__/____/

you may also want to upgrade you stock fog bulbs. i bumped mine to piaa ion crystals, and adjusted them slightly upwards, and the output is great!

Yea I'm not looking for any cool colors or anything like that I'm going for maximum night vision. I want to see as much as possible without getting ticketed or blinding oncoming traffic.

A member on this board sells plug-n-play harnesses for the aftermarket lights. JimHoyd is his name.

Mine are spliced. I couldn't wait for the harnesses so I just had to install them. I'm using 95w Raybrig bulbs. They're very good so far and very white. I was using cheap bulbs before which kept burning out, but these raybrigs have been great so far. (*knocks on wood*) They cost a little more, but are well worth it. Hell, the money I spent in cheap bulbs, I could have almost bought a HID kit. :p One of these days I will though.

Anyways, good luck.
no_rex_yet 03-12-2003 05:37 PM

95 watts!

are you worried about burning out your wiring? i believe the stock wattage is 55w

Not at all. I've had these lights for about 6-7 months with no problems other than the cheapy bulbs burning out.

I can't believe you guys are so lazy...there are SO MANY threads answering ALL of these questions. And they've been so recently that you wouldn't really even need to use the search function.

Nonetheless...here's my STi projectors with VisionPlus bulbs shining on my wall. This pic is useful to show the cutoff, but doesn't help you compare to the stock H1 bulbs...I actually have a before and after pic, but the difference isn't adequately reflected by the pics. If you saw it in person, however....
So its sounding like they are a pain to adjust? What is this leveling switch I've read about?
No. They can be adjusted with an 8mm wrench, both vertically and horizontally. It's stupefyingly easy. The leveling switch ought to have been adequately explained in LENGTHY previous threads...but the gist of it is that adjusts the focal point of the beams up or down depending on the load in the rear of the vehicle. This can only be used with the EDM LHD STi projectors...the RHD JDMs do not have the internal leveling motors.
gersh10 03-12-2003 08:24 PM

Sorry not trying to be lazy, just expedient, I did some searches and it was taking to long running through the 13 page threads, this thread has been great for answering all my questions. By the way that is one of the best pics I've seen of projectors on a wall shows the cutoff and the spread great. How many ft away were you.

Has anyone compaired the JDMs to the Morettes for light patterns and how susceptible to damage are the Morette lenses. I already need to replace one of my driving light lenses. After saying that are there protectors for those where you don't loose the light.

Oh yea no one has said yet if you can get the JDMs in all chrome. In doing a couple searches I couldn't really tell by the pics if they were all chrome or black. like I said earlier I kinda like that all glass look from the front.
128d 03-12-2003 09:16 PM

I believe there are a set that are chrome, but these are very rare not to mention expensive.
Zola 03-12-2003 11:39 PM
How many ft away were you.
Maybe 8 or 10 feet.
Oh yea no one has said yet if you can get the JDMs in all chrome.
I believe the JDM projectors only had the chrome housings in one model year. Ever since they have been black. Good luck finding them, and if you do...good luck paying for them. If you do manage to source a set, your cutoff will be the reverse of what I have pictured above.
Ti-REX 03-13-2003 09:05 AM

Plus, if you want even more light on high beams, go to this thread on scoobymods.com that explains everything on how to get your high beams AND your fogs to be on together.
gersh10 03-13-2003 10:32 AM

I use to like that Idea till I realized that lighting the road directly infront of me actually decrease my ability to see farther. The brighter the road directly off your hood line the more your pupal will restrict, letting in less light to see dimly lit objects down the road. Same reason you don't drive at night with bight instrament lights or the cabin light on. Now on tight windy roads at higher speeds I would like that option because I'm not trying to see a long distance down the road, just far enough to make out up coming corners and adjust for them. Thanks for the link though, I like the option having the fog lights when I want them.

I agree with you. I haven't really used my foglights, since I've installed my STi headlights. I find myself focusing too much on the foglight lights instead of the road in front of me. The only time I've found the foglights helpful recently is when it's snowing.

Originating from Minnesota I understand driving in the snow. I also found that ambers are the best for cutting through the snow and highlighting the road lines or contours of the snow if the lines are covered. With that, who makes a real good amber that would fit the stock driving lights on the Subie.

And Benjamin Tang, thanks for the pic,,,, uuummm I'm really glad to hear that you didn't add those accsessory lights yourself....:D

Sounds like chromed projectors are out of the picture for me, so what would be the best upgrade bulb for my stock head lights (which I love the look of by the way) that gives a white light and great power without melting down my system. I had some idiot sell me bulbs for my Honda, and maybe it was somewhat my fault for not asking, but I didn't know, and he worked in the performance shop so I thought he would tell me if there would be a problem, but it melted down my whole wiring harness,,, what a mess.

Thanks for all the help everyone.
Todd
