STU @ The Nationals ... part 1

makofoto 06-22-2005 02:03 AM

STU @ The Nationals ...
At the Nationals this year ... STU is going to run with BSP. IF STU gets 25 entrants or more ... they will be scored as a separate class ... but no National Champion Title.

STU seems to be popular on the West Coast, but not in the East(?). At the National Tour in Toldeo I believe there were only 2 (3?) entrants. STU of course has the potential to become at least as popular as STX, perhaps even more so. A lot of the "sports" minded people buying Subarus and Mitsui's are buying STI's and Evo's.

We had 17 entrants in STU at our last Champ event.

Nancy Downing/SCCA is encouraging us to send STU drivers to the Nationals so that a good showing will accelerate acceptance of this latest class. I know that it's difficult to go through the trouble and expense of a Nationals without a chance to become a National Champion but if STU is your class ... this is where it starts. At least among the hardcore fans ... whoever wins STU this year will be considered a Champ ... sort of ...

Mako, you kinda forgot the whole middle of the country! ;)

Milwaukee Region has a really strong contingent of STU drivers. Not sure why more of them didn't go to Toledo (maybe they hate the drive through Chicago as much as I do.:( )

I'm pondering a move to STU with the 8 within a year or two. We'll see.

I think there are 4 (including myself) from the Dallas area that are planning on running in STU at Nationals. 3 STi drivers and an M3. I'm hoping at least for a bigger turnout than the 8 or so last year. :(

I wish they would lump us in with the ESP group though. At least then it might be closer, even on street tires.

It's not a point of 'being closer'. You're a supplimental class (there were times that supplimental classes did run at Nationals). Just like STX was a couple years ago. Getting 25 cars at nationals and you can have your own run group.

It all starts like Mako did, but it needs to be on all the other forums that make up the cars in the class. It needs to be promoted, and don't let up one ounce. It worked for STX a few years ago.

If we don't make the 25, we'll still be scored with BSP like last year. By 'being closer' I only meant it would be nice to maybe be mid-pack in ESP instead of near the bottom of BSP. Give a little stronger showing. Not that it really matters, I'm just going to have some fun. :)

Dave Breunner took first at nationals in STU last year. He's been doing very well in Milwaukee region this year.
omahasubaru 06-22-2005 09:30 AM

Heck... here in NRSCCA we get 5 STU entrants on average. One is an E36 M3, not just EVO's/STi's. I know KCRSCCA has probablly that many as well.

Most STUers are just out for fun... not looking to be competitive. Same with STS & STX in my region. I'm the only ST_ person in my region to ever attend nationals. Seems we only have Stock and SP people going besides a few odd ball Mod people.

Our region is small though. I'll be back at nats this year, but in STS instead of STX.

Yeah he along with about 3 or 4 others are always really tight in times swapping first place with each run sometimes. I know Tim White in an Evo will be at teh Peru tour in STU, my guess is that he'll make it to Nationals.
ChrisL2 06-22-2005 10:58 AM

I run STU locally. Have a couple others here also. I'm not a hard core auto-x though.

Maybe I'll attend just for the hell of it. Got to get magnetic numbers if I'm going to do that though.

The only reason I run STU is cause I have a front lip.

Ian Stewart in the M3 should be a strong contender.
Anyone know who's going to be the guy to beat in STU??? Wow 17 is alot NW only has 2 to 3.
Mike Neary, also in an M3, should be in the hunt.
WRXIN 06-22-2005 05:37 PM
Most STUers are just out for fun... not looking to be competitive. Same with STS & STX in my region.
Ahem, :D I'm in STU specifically to be competitive (out on the west coast). Its a very competitive class for us. There are rarely more than fractions of a second between the top finishers. I won the national tour in San Diego and I'm hoping to go to the nationals.

So, I know there are STU folks out there who are in this class to win. We need to rally up and get a good showing at the nationals this year.
dave bruener 06-22-2005 06:04 PM

I'll be there, again. Gotta defend the bragging rights if nothing else ;)
We have good turn out in STU in Milwaukee region-- last week I think there were 7 and we have 5 regulars. I should be able to talk a few of them into going.
makofoto 06-22-2005 07:36 PM

Excellent Responses ... if WRXIN goes ... I get to co-drive his STI ! :-)

Now we just need someone my boss trusts to co-drive his Z-06 and help drive the tow vehicle out to Kansas ...
jbrennen 06-23-2005 01:21 AM

If anybody wants an STU co-driver at Nationals, let me know. I'm looking for an AWD ride, and would love to do my part to make STU a class. I trophied in SM in 2004 at 2 ProSolos and at the NE Divisional, so I can drive a little... One of those trophies was on street tires. ;)
makofoto 06-23-2005 01:32 AM

I guess the next step is for everyone remotely thinking of entering STU at the Nationals ... to go ahead and register ... knowing that one can cancel by a certain date and get a refund.

If we get enough entrants ... we can see if STU is given it's own run group ... and when that group will be scheduled to run ... Tue/Wed or Thur/Fri. Knowing which dates the STU race will be run is important to some people in deciding if they can go.
ChrisL2 06-23-2005 02:40 AM

I guess I need to join the SCCA before I register?
TreyS 06-23-2005 10:21 AM

Don't you have to trophy in a Divisional before you can go to Nationals or can we just register and show up, as an SCCA member.
KC 06-23-2005 10:32 AM
Don't you have to trophy in a Divisional before you can go to Nationals or can we just register and show up, as an SCCA member.
If you run in a Div or Tour, you're eligible (as long as you're a member). No trophy required. You can be DFL in your calss, but you can still go to the championships in Topeka. :)

Or, you can even pay the waiver and just go. (like I did last year since it would have cost $350-$450 for me to go to the nearest tour/div.. and the waiver was something like $80)

As for eligibility for Nationals, you need to do any one of the following:

Attend a National Tour (placement doesn't matter).
Attend a Divisional Championship event (placement doesn't matter). Note that Divisional Series events (i.e. CenDiv points event, for instance) don't count - just the Divisional Championship event.
Pay the waiver fee (I think it's $70).
TheWRX 06-23-2005 02:54 PM
Note that Divisional Series events (i.e. CenDiv points event, for instance) don't count - just the Divisional Championship event.
Any Divisional event counts. "Eligibility to enter the Solo II National Championship is limted to persons having competed in either a Divisional Solo II or a Solo II National Tour event in the previous twelve months, current National Solo II Champions, or event officials ..."
jcroy66 06-23-2005 03:08 PM

However, the Divisional Series events (i.e. CenDiv Series) are not actually considered "Divisional" events by the national office. They are considered to be a series of regional events.
TheWRX 06-23-2005 03:24 PM

Ah, I see. As far as I understand, that's different in our Division. All MiDiv events (we have 5 of them this year) are Divisional events.
funsti 06-23-2005 05:25 PM

Anyone know if SE-Div events are considered regional as well?

Yup, I am planning on going to the National Championship this year. I can't let Dave B. win 2 years in a row :) That's why I am going to Peru. I just wish there was more competition in Peru. I am 1 of 2 STU cars. I get more competition in Milwaukee for sure!

Smittys_STi 06-25-2005 12:04 PM

I'd be willing to warm tires in any decently prepared STU car, especially if you need more drivers!!

My car is still in stock trim, but I think STU is where I ultimately want to go in a few years, once we get bumped to BSP ....

Feel free to PM me! :D
whitet777 06-26-2005 10:49 AM

Smitty,

The entry limit is already met for the event. No new drivers allowed. Plus, you wouldn't want to go to the dark side and drive an Evo would you?

Tim
Smittys_STi 06-26-2005 11:55 AM

if it's decently prepped, it counts on my list :D .... doh, forgot about the entry cap though.

EDIT: How about Nationals?
whitet777 06-27-2005 09:26 AM

Sorry Smittys,

It's not really decently prepped, and I prefer to race alone.

Tim
