Why are you running a rear sway bar that is bigger than stock?
Why not the 235/40s instead? (I don't know as much about the section width of these tires).

Setup looks fine although the rear swaybar is probably not needed and I'm not a big fan of royal Purple (but is really just a matter of preference).
Are you allowed shifter bushings in STU? If so consider them
Question for you. Did you ever check to see how much - camber you could get with just the KW V3s (and no PDE camber plate)?

Weighed the wheel/tire combo last night and it is exactly 40lbs per corner. I think I will stick with the SSR's for now. When Volk mags a magnesium wheel for me then I will jump to a 9.5" wheel.
Why are you running a rear sway bar that is bigger than stock?

Still working on the car setup but as of now the car rotates pretty good. Stuck in the transitions and throttle oversteer in steady state. Also the rear springs are progressive and soft. Changing the rear springs next month to 400lbs and then going to a smaller or no rear bar, testing will prove what works best and what works for me.

With 245/45-17's I get 62mph at the limiter in 2nd. With 245/40-17's I get 60mph at the limiter in 2nd. I want the width and the stiffer sidewall of the 245/40 but I really don't want to give up anymore tire height.
how do you like the KW V3s for autox duty?
They are a very nice improvement over the "pinks" I ran last year. The adjustability is the greatest thing since sliced bread too. I can set the rebound to full soft for street driving and the car is very forgiving and smooth. Turn up the rebound in front to near full stiff and the car improves in turn-in and transition dramatically. Use ther rear rebound to tune for the surface I am racing on to control oversteer. Yes, I really like them.
With that being said, I am going to try stiffer linear rear springs soon.

Screw the weight, you're giving up a ****ton of tire width pinching them on that small wheel.

First off, they are not pinched. Second, you want to point me in the direction of a lightweight 17x9 or 17x9.5 wheel that fits AND clears the Brembos? I already tried the 17x9.5 Enkei's (RP-F1?), the front wheels hit the Brembos.

Hmm.. .interesting. I don't have experience with progressive rates above 259#s.
- running 550/500s, I dont think there is nearly enough rate to run NO rear sway.
- My driving: I would rather use 3rd more (if required) with a 235/40 than worry about the 245/45s or 245/40. It may just be due to feel, but that is MY perception. I like to smaller 235 and smaller sidewall.
- How much caster?
Sounds like a pretty competitive car setup. Good luck, and you have a good platform to do well ;)

Ps. Lose more weight! :D

More weight and less power is really the setup up you need to dominate STU, so I'd start there. Take it back to your tuner and see if he can knock it down about 100hp/100tq; you'd still have 10hp on me, but throw a couple of hundred more lbs on the car and I'd call it even. ;)

haha, Mike you rock.
I don't know who in their right mind would only use a 235 when the 245 is available.
And Paul, we've discussed this in the past. While the tires are working on your rims. and their not bulging like a baloon. There is signigicant gain to be had with a wider rim. You can also run less camber and air with the tire being supported properly.
There are several options above. I'm sure you could dump the rims on this site for little loss.

Setup looks good. since you can't do a rear diff in STU, I'd start testing stiffer springs and little or no rear bar ASAP. That's damn good power for an STU car though.

nice numbers, I just got back from PDX last night...
if your baseline was 270 and the stu map was 298 that's about a 10% increase. That is exactly what they achieved with my STU tune. (but I ran 92octane)
my BSP map is out of control though
they found an additional 23% ft/lbs of torque. w00t. with over 100ft/lbs more at 3000rpm
+1 for PDXtuning (and the proper combination of parts)

Except for a few differences, it looks like you STOLE my car Paul :)
Sure wish I had known what 17X9 or 9.5 rims would have fit when I got my GN+ cause at the time no one from 5Zigen, or anyone else could honestly tell me if theirs would work.
Oh, and if you want to save a few more pounds - go get the Cobra Missano seat!!!! Its a recliner with a carbon fiber backing, matches the STi interior (mine did with the blue alcantara insert), and is like around 15 - 18lbs. And does it hold you in!!!!!!

Question for you. Did you ever check to see how much - camber you could get with just the KW V3s (and no PDE camber plate)?
I'm running KW V3s on an '05 right now with no camber plates, I could only get 1.17deg of negative front camber. Not enough. Plates will be going on shortly.
I'm also currently running the 450front/prog rear springs. I'm debating whether to do a rear bar, or just change the rear springs. Right now I'm leaning toward 400# rear springs. Either that or ~500# front and putting the 450's on the rear.

Well, FWIW, anyone thinking of changing their springs on the KW's should contact Tom Edge at KW. He is an awesome guy who is also a car nut - and WILL help you with any info that he can. And if need be, will even contact the engineers back in Germany to find the correct answer. He gives you excellent customer service!

My experience is that progressive springs are unpredictable. By swapping springs (instead of the bar) you could get the rotation you want and make the more controllable- that's two birds with one stone.

Hey, for you STU guys with downpipes... if you get boost creep you cant port your turbo, so does that mean you will have to get a tune to solve the problem, I am just curious how you guys deal with that, or if it is an issue for you.
| afpdl | 03-30-2006 11:21 PM |
With a cat in place Ive never had an issue with boost creep unless its under 40 degrees and Im well into 5th gear.
| AndrewSS | 03-30-2006 11:29 PM |
^ ok, thanks for your input there - I am no means really educated on the boost creep "issue" so yeah thanks, if I got a DP it would be catted as well.
| silver arrow | 03-31-2006 10:46 PM |
My car rotates very well with 10k/8k spring and 32mm FSB and stock rear. More RSB and you are just losing overall grip IMO. I'm actually looking to add neg chamber to the rear because I have so much front grip. How much of a difference do the RT-615's make compared to RE070's? I'm still running the RE070 until they are dead and I get better at driving, this is my rookie season. Doing pretty well though. 4/9 first race, 5/5 second, 1/4 the third race. Second course was a sea of cones up and back that at least 1/3 of the experienced drivers had multiple O/C's and crazy cones. The Miata's and Sprigets couldn't even make it through.
| awesome2.5rs | 04-01-2006 09:55 PM |
Very nice setup, talk about some great mods :)
| AndrewSS | 04-01-2006 09:57 PM |
What do you guys recommend for me as far as "cheap STU mods" I refuse to buy coilovers for a while, I just dont have the cash too (I lust after KW v3's and maybe will get them in season or 2) anyway, I already got a strano FSB... basically I want to run stock struts/springs until I can afford coilovers. For now I am ok with them.... so I enjoy the FSB... I was thinking either Cusco or PDE camber plates... which ones do you recommend for me? Then I was thinking 22mm-24mm or so RSB. Then I think a catless DP, finally do you guys think strut bars are beneficial at all, I hear the rear one is somewhat... granted its probably nothing. Well, any input would be greatly appreciated!
| silver arrow | 04-01-2006 10:12 PM |
Andrew,
Pinks, camber plates in front and leave the stock RSB. That should give you what you are looking for about $700.

| AndrewSS | 04-02-2006 12:31 AM |
^ I agree, but I am not going to spend the $$$ on pinks/springs... just save till I can actually get coilovers (yeah I know pinks would be better, but I really need to regulate the $) From what I have felt, my strano FSB and oem RSB is pretty good, however the way I understand it is that a slightly larger RSB is good if you dont have a good stiff spring rate in the rear to regulate the oversteer or whatever. Any other opinions. I was looking at a 22mm-24mm RSB. I definetly want to get camber plates... which one are you guys running? The cusco or the PDE, and what exactly is "redrilling them for more castor?"
Ok, thanks a lot for your help!

PDE Plates are awesome. (i have a set waiting to go in right next to me). A fellow autoxer has them on his wrx. the beatuy is you can get to the right setting every single time! plus PDE just lowered their price, direct from PDE they are cheaper then alot of vendors paid for their stock 6 months ago. PDE's are already predilled for caster.

these are the sizes that clear the STi Brembos (according to Rays) and are 5x114.3
Can someone verify these along with 245/40s will fit w/o any clearance problems on stock STi, i.e. not lowered?
