STU STI tire size preference

Of course it's course dependent ... but have people reached a consensus on whether the general preferred tire size for STU STI's is 245/45/17 or 245/40/17?
245/45 is quite a bit taller then stock; 245/40 slightly shorter then oem 225/45/17.
Is it working out to use the taller tire and try to stay in 2nd ... or use the shorter tire and get into third more often and sooner. The 245/40 is very slightly wider then the 245/45 and has a shorter sidewall.
If one is limited to an 8" stock wheel ... would that make a difference in which size you would go with ...

I go by if you can afford Yoks use 245/40s and bump you rev limiter, if not 245/45s.
| Scooby South | 04-13-2006 07:33 PM |
It all depends on what kind of course your running...the 45's are taller making the gearing longer...the 40's make the gearing shorter...Personally...I like the 40's..

Strange that he wouldn't use a wider tire then the skinny 255 ... out here the BMW's are using 265 and 275. :D
| subieworx | 04-14-2006 08:20 AM |
Around here the courses usually have a pretty good straight to them which normally lands me in 3rd (course design by Danny Popp, what would you expect from a vette driver? We've had Chicago boxes that you didn't have to turn the wheel to get through). The 45's help that a bit, but not too much.

When someone beats me bad with a 265 or 275 and I can see that the fender mods are what I would deem legal, then maybe I'll consider going bigger. Right now, I'm not all that sure about the legality of the fender rolling required to fit a 265 or 275. I rolled my inner lip pretty aggressively and I still rub with a 255.

You just need bigger fenders. My friend's 99 M roadster fits 275's just fine lowered on TC kline coilovers.

I'm about to pick up new tires and was about to completely reconsider my choice for a moment there :)
I'm going with 245/45 because of the slightly taller gearing will help me stay out of 3rd. Otherwise, I find myself needing 3rd once in a while on the Philly courses, then I have to waste time shifting.

im curious to hear your guys opinions on my 2 choices... I am running in STU, I am trying to decide which size of the RT615 to run, its either the 235/40/17 or the 245/45/17
I would assume the 245 is nice cause its bigger, but I will be mounting these on the stock 8" wheel and it seems that the too wide of tire for wheel diameter is brought up by some. Then the I have to consider the gearing of the 45 is nice... but is that too much sidewall in any of your opinions? What say you? Either the 235/40/17 RT615 or the 245/45/17 RT615, let me know what you think.
Thanks.

You don't want the too short for STI, perfect for WRX 235/40/17 tire.
You should consider the very inexpensive 245/40/17 Hankook RS2 212 or if you have the money, that same size Yoko or the new Bridgestone RE-01R.
We run the 245's on 8" wheels without any problems. 8.5" is ideal (A number of inexpensive Rota wheels available). 9" is wider then necessary, and is giving fitment problems to STI owners. Must have stiff springs and fender rolling in the back.
43 mm off set 9" Zigens with 245/40/17 Yok's

Good eyes ... yes ... just a quick test fitting.
A number of people have mentioned that the oem 225 070's are faster then the 245/45 615's. Serious STU competitors are switching to the Yok's. We're trying the RE-01R's in 245/40 this weekend.

| DougM | 04-19-2006 01:14 PM |
the 245/45 will fit "better" on your 8" wheel. The taller sidewall allows for less pinching. Check the recommended wheel widths in the specifications for the tire you're interested in. I have 245/40/17's on my stock 7.5" BBS. Yokohama lists this tire as fitting 8-9" wheels and they were right. it doesn't really fit on the 7.5".... but, you have 8's so that should be fine. Honestly though I can't stand all the shifting required so my next tire is going to be the 245/45/17 (which will fit widthwise better anyways). So, ...taller you might give up some turn-in feel (depending on the sidewall strength) but the ride will be smoother and the gearing will be better.

that's interesting.. I really liked the 070's as well, the yokes are stickier but I lost a lot of feel. (pinching them on, oh well).
oh, and for the uninitiated. serious competitors are switching to the Yokes partly because yokohama has a good contingency program (good money).

I was going to go with Yoko's, but I REALLY like the RE070s. We debated for a while and decided to try the RE01R's since Mako will be co-driving my car for a while.
We're taking a chance with a relatively untested tire, but I have to admit I'm excited about it. We should have some feedback by the end of this weekend.
If Bridgestone made the RE-070s in 245, there would be no question which tire I'd be running.

I dissagree Paul. The yokos run wide as it is. Most of their tires so. I think the Advan will do well on the 9" wheel, but that the 9.5" wheel will really exactract the full potential of the tire.
If you've seen pictures of Richard Jung's Evo, with that exact setup, the tire just looks like it's happy to be on there. I'd say 9" for the Falken would be about right, 8.5" would work as well as I'm sure you can attest to. But yes, with the shortstiff sidewall of the Yok, you are would certainly be better off with the 9" rim.

I thought the 070s had more grip than the 615s, on a stock suspension. Now that I'm on Tein Flexes, I'd have to try again. Would be interesting.
A local competator ran the 615's back to back against his RE070's and said the 070s were 1/2 to 1 second faster. Same car, just swapped wheels and tires.
