Stupid Cats! part 1

Tek 10-18-2003 03:35 PM

Stupid Cats!
my mom's two stupid cats won't stay the hell off my car at night after i get home. i smack them, and make the panic horn go off, but next thing i know when i get out of bed the next morning there's a bunch of muddy paw prints and loose cat hair all over my car.

dammit, i just washed it too ... any ideas on how i could keep them off my car for good? except for killing them?
im2.5rs 10-18-2003 03:52 PM

I hate that when that happens. When I'm out washing my car and I see one of my mother-in-laws cats go near my RS, I spray them with the hose. Haven't jumped on my car since.

You can go to a pet supply store and buy a scat mat. It is a mat that gives the animal a small electrical shock when it gets on it. Works great for cars or furniture.
THAWA 10-18-2003 05:21 PM

a car cover could work
Saladin 10-18-2003 05:44 PM

hrm, howbout a dog?
c_hunter 10-18-2003 05:54 PM

Cats don't like the smell of moth-balls, so that may be a deterrent (put some near where you park). However, I don't like that smell either, so it wouldn't be an option for me.

There's also other spray deterrents you can buy, check Petsmart.

The trick with cats is to teach them once or twice, and they should be learned for life. Maybe a good shot from the garden hose would do it....

Yep, or maybe airsoft if you dont want to hurt them too bad.
Hash25rs 10-18-2003 06:11 PM

just feed them some ibeprofen
hitman912 10-18-2003 06:22 PM

i know!
I had the same ****ing problem.....whenever i would wash my beautiful car those damn cats would jump on the hood and walk across the windsheild to the roof. so i went to orchard supply and got some "HARTZ HELP! Stay off Training Aid". it comes in a white bottle with a picture of a cat and dog on it. just spray that on the ground around your car or a towel and the cats wont go near it. its a bitter smell that would make me vomit if there was enough sprayed near me.
MAD REX 10-18-2003 06:24 PM

Cats shouldn't be outside anyway! :o

I've heard of stories of cats crawling up in the engine bay cause it's warm and then when you start the car you have a big mess on your hands... :alien:
catass 10-18-2003 11:03 PM

cats hate vinegar, you could spray that around your car and they'd stay away.
Tek 10-19-2003 05:41 AM

cool, i'm glad there's other people out there that share the same problem with stupid cats.

i had to put some towels on top of my hood leaving a space for my vent just to make sure i don't wake up with cat hair and paw prints all over the next morning.

plus, i wish i could spray them with the hose, but they seem to only go on my car when i'm dead asleep ... clever bastards sometimes.
garface 10-19-2003 01:50 PM

Put a bowl of coolant on the ground near your car, won't have anymore problems.

j/k DON'T DO THIS!!! They will drink it and will die. Unless you want to kill them then there you go. ;)
Hash25rs 10-19-2003 01:52 PM

well, thats what the ibeprofen will do, kill em, its like cyanide to a cat

btw, i hate cats
Dr Ken 10-19-2003 07:30 PM

It is time you communicated to the little beasts in a language they understand: Urine. To reclaim your territory as the dominant species, you MUST personally spray, with pride, the bonnet, the tires, the entire car. Only then, will you reclaim your roll as lord of the neighborhood feline.
limpreza 10-19-2003 08:33 PM

When I had a problem with a four year old who enjoys rubbing his hand across the side of my car, I was considering installing some type of electrical shock system. I guess you have one electrical terminal on the car body and the other on the ground. The problem is getting conductance to their feet (salty wet floor?)
Anyone know of a good system.
Should work with cats too. (maybe not, since they won't be touching the ground.)
NimrodBoz 10-19-2003 10:12 PM

move out and dont bring the cats. or you could have mean dogs vinyled all over your car.

To keep stray animals away=pepper; if it lands on their nose  . "Had" problems with them in garbage.
Adiliyo 10-20-2003 01:33 AM

a car cover would work too though, but i think you should go the urine route, and add some feces while you're at it, and pee on them too, then they won't know where to go ;)

seriously though, i guess a car cover or maybe go to pets mart and ask them... :)
bemani 10-20-2003 01:58 PM

Cats are smart, all you have to do is teach it that the car is off limit. Wait for it to get on your car and just bring it down. After you repeat a few times, it'll learn that you don't want it on the car. You just have to be patient.
limpreza 10-20-2003 11:01 PM

My cat is stupid. I can take her off of the counter a million times and she will never care. She learns not to do it while I'm in the same room, but she has no conscience to care otherwise (when I'm gone).
Alex RS 10-21-2003 12:49 AM

I had the same problem! Just by an inexpnsive car cover and put it on at night. It works, and even if they do jump on, no harm done.

Slime 'em....
chRStna 10-21-2003 08:01 AM

Anyone else have any simple home remedies to get rid of unwanted stray cats? I have this problem in my neighborhood. It seems as though this cat has marked his "territory" all over my property- my front door, my lawn furniture, my fence.. and it won't leave me alone whenever I go outside. It's been following me to my car, and the last thing I want is him rubbing up against it, and god forbid, scratching it up. I'm looking for a permanent, yet *non-lethal* solution. Pepper and vinegar sound good.. I'm gonna try those, but I have a feeling this cat won't be easily stopped.
UncleMeat 10-21-2003 09:51 AM

Cats are persistant little ********. They are hard to stop. For them being on your car, I would try a small electrical current attached to your frame.

There are sprays, one I've used is called "bitter apple" and the name says it all. It's the worst sour apple taste you can imagine. I tried using it to keep animals from chewing various furniture. Helped for about a month but eventually, if the animals want to do something, they will ignore the pain/taste.

Hitting them won't do any good, they'll just make sure they don't get caught next time.

You can try soaking them with a bucket of water... might scare them off enough.

chRStna - As for the strays on your property, if you have a valve to turn your outside water on/off from inside the house, you can have a sprinkler set up and turn it on whenever the cats are in your yard. Could help.

Otherwise, fabreeze all your furniture (to get rid of the urine smell) and maybe spray amonia or place moth balls in your yard/porch. Make sure you don't have any small kids or pets out there though.

You can also try a living trap (please go humane) and then either take the cats to an animal control center (with the understanding the cat will likely end up dead) or do what you want.
Ghostrider600 10-21-2003 11:06 AM

They're going to the car because it's a warm and relatively tall spot for them, two things they love.

They best and most humane thing is simply get a car cover, and that'll solve the problem of them putting prints on the car.

As to cats scratching the paint, their claws aren't made of steel, and they'd have about as much chance of doing it as you would with your own finger nails (which is the same material hardness as their claws) keep a good coat of wax on the car and there shouldn't be any problem.

are these the same thing?
gpd323 10-21-2003 03:56 PM

It took two weeks, but my cat never gets on my 3 cars anymore. I bought the ScatMat at www.scatmat.com and my cat learned quickly!

I still keep it activated on ramdom areas on the cars just in case, but I have no more cat prints on my cars. BTW, before the ScatMat I had my cat slide off the WRX hood with claws out and pulled up my Stongard. Bad kitty!

I like the ScatMat a lot!!!
