STX-legal seats?

I'm thinking about picking up a pair of seats for the Rex. They need to be STX-legal, light, and fairly cheap. I was thinking about the Corbeau Forzas.
http://www.corbeau.com/brochure/forza.shtml
These are the lightest, cheapest seats I could find that actually fit me. They also have an optional inflatable lumbar support, which is definitely a plus for longer drives. (like the 13 hrs to Peru or the 10 hrs to Topeka....)
A. Does everyone agree these would be STX-legal?
B. Anyone have first-hand experience with these seats? (long-haul comfort, durability, etc.)
Thx!

Looks like it is STX legal due to the tube steel frame. Im planning on getting something similar myself. I'm trying to figure out why some are allowed and some aren't. I can see the weight savings part, but is that the only reason?

non-reclining competition seats are allowed, but they can't have a solid shell to be legal for STX. These seats are legal because of the tubular steel construction.
The primary advantage is weight @ 16lbs while the stock seat is much heavier.
Don't know about long trips, but a well fitting seat can't be all that bad:cool:

what other none reclining seats are STX legal???

Does anyone have first-hand experience with the Forza's? My biggest concern, at this point, is how well a $220 seat will hold up.
Thx!
-Steve
Angryfist, if I'm reading the rules correctly, the following fixed-back seats should be within the rules:
Corbeau - Forza, Forza II, Clubman
Sparco - Sprint, Speed
Cobra - Monaco, Clubman
Momo - T-Frame
Thx!

i've sat in the sparco sprint and speed before but they feel so cheap. and the material used on it is so thin i dont think it would last very long.
i wish they allowed single shell seats...

Steve, I know a guy who (I think) is a Corbeau dealer, at least I've seen him selling Corbeau seats. I haven't heard anything negative from the buyers, they seem to be very happy with the seats. If you want I can try and get you in touch, just PM me contact information.
I briefly sat in Top_Dog's seat, and if felt very nice. I wonder how comfortable it is for longer drives, Pat?
Besides weight, another reason for a race seat is that it might work better with a stiff suspension. I have some bounciness with my coilovers, and I feel like the stock seats might play an important role. It seems like they're the softest part of my "suspension", and I'm actually bouncing around in the seat.

I personally dislike the Forza. The tube frame can be felt through the cloth. There's very little padding. I have to drive/ride at least 1hr to get to any autoX event and even that long they are uncomfortable. Every tube frame seat I've sat in feels extremely cheap. IMHO, with seats you get what you pay for. Unfortunately in STX you don't have much of a choice if you're looking at dropping weigt.

Maybe a silly question but since I've never ridden/driven in a car with real racing buckets...
Do you still use the normal seatbelt when driving on the street?

Yes, I use the stock belt on the street. I just put the 4 point out of the way for everyday.
TheWRX, yeah my butt gets sore after a long trips like for the St Louis Divisional. I used a small pillow to which made the trip better. I want to see about getting a pad made of that memory form. The ride in my car is fine, it's my ass that hates the bare seat without out a pad.

Hmm, everyone seems to be confirming what I suspected - the cheap, steel framed seats approved for STX are about as comfortable and durable as one can expect from a $200 seat.
Arghh! Another SCCA compromise rule that results in a less-than satisfying situation. Not sure what I'm going to do about seats - maybe flip a coin....

With the exception of a top dollar rally seat you won't find a whole lot of comfort from a race seat. They are minimally padded, and relatively thinly upholstered... every one I've seen has been that way, whether tube frame or solid shell. Sure, quality does go up with price but these are not the cushy-comfy seats you want for a road trip.
| Kostamojen | 06-03-2003 04:13 AM |
A local karting arena had some Sparco Sprints set up for everyone to sit in as like chairs... (Kinda funny but cool none the less)
Anyhow, sat in them for a cool hour plus and I didnt get uncomfortable. I was kinda surprized, since I had sat in one before and they dont feel like they are that great of quality or that comfy but they held up just fine after sitting in them for awhile... I'd get one right this second if I could afford one :p

nah, Sparco EVOs are damn comfy. They support you so well, that they are actually more comfortable over long trips.

But the evos aren't a tubular frame. Maybe the "top dollar" comment was a bit much but you need to almost double the cost of the clubman/monaco (forza) to get one that's decently comfy and will hold up well.

I agree - I'd love to have a set of Evo 2's in my car! Hmm...I wonder if they'd be legal, if I glued fabric to the exposed shell?
Probably wishful thinking, but the rules do say completely upholsered!:p

i'm a little slow to the draw but can add some experience. i have the forza's in my track car ('91 mustang). they're a great seat for autox and 20 minute track sessions- lightweight and very supportive. that's what they're intended for.
depending on how stiff your suspension is and how bad your roads are, they could be tolerable for short stints on the street (probably <1 hr). but don't even think about driving several hours to and from events in these seats.
frankly, i think the wrx seats are the very last thing i would worry about. fix the brakes, the understeer, and the turbo lag. the rest of the car is pretty good, imo.

The main reasons I'm contemplating different seats:
1. My JIC coilovers are great on the track & autox course. However, they are really f@#%g bouncy on certain types of concrete highways. I've heard a firmer seat helps considerably with the bounciness.
2. I've been having a lot of issues with my back of late - especially on longer drives to events. The main culprit seems to be the utter lack of lumbar support in the WRX seats.
3. The sport seats in my old 3-Series and the Recaro's in my Celica GTS were both a lot better than the WRX seats (at least for me).
Maybe I should forget about saving any weight and look at something like the Sparco Torino's. Or I could just live with the bounciness and get a lumbar pad (hmm...this cheap option would leave me enough money to buy some r-compounds for track days - very tempting!)

you said it- if you're having back problems, forget about race seats and get the best you can afford. i do miss an adjustable lumbar on trips, too.
i expect a stiffer seat would worsen the problem, not help it.

They look very nice, but pricey. Makes me want a GT3 :p. Pretty neat though -- looks like a real Racer SPG but widened up a little and set up for better street use.
Since I'm getting an STi, I'm not legal for STX anyway, and we have someone here in AS that makes that a no-go for me -- I'd be better off in ESP or SM. Hence I can look at seats. I've decided to take the advice of some locals and at least give the stock seats a try first (that and sticker shock at the price of a pair of Sparco Milano 2s or Recaro SPGs). I'm not super-thin (36" waist) so maybe they'll fit OK. Maybe the Sparco Pro 2000 / Evo / Prodrive seats would be a good deal -- I do however need something that would work for a reasonably comfortable 3 hour drive every now and then, and at least survivable for a once-a-year 10 hour drive.

Big News on the seating front!
This from a post on SCCA Forums:
******************************************
coming soon to a FasTrack near you ...
in the meantime unofficially as follows:
-----------------
Effective 1/1/2004, change 17.2.B:
a) The seating surface must be fully upholstered
b) The top of the seat, or an attached headrest, may not be below the center of the drivers head.
c) The seat, not including mounting hardware, must weigh at least 15 pounds.
--------------------
in summary, the weight limit pretty much eliminates any performance justification to purchase a high cost seat.
http://www.sccaforums.com/ubb/Forum22/HTML/000609.html
************************************************
This means seats like the Sparco Evo2 (listed at 17.4 lbs) would be legal next year. Hooray! This just decided the seating issue for me - wait until next year, then put in some Evo2's!

I started this post, assuming I would be buying seats which meet current 2003 rules. Most seats with tubular steel construction all into this category. I've tried most of the tubular steel seats out there, and to be blunt, they're almost all crap. I couldn't find one fixed-back seat that met my minimum standards of comfort or quality construction (I did look at the Momo T, and wasn't impressed). There are a couple reclining seats that would be acceptable (Corbeau CR-1, Recaro Sport), however these seat weigh almost 30 lbs each.
Hence, my delight in hearing that we should be able to use high quality racing seats next year. I'll hold out until then, rather than invest in something uncomfortable and/or heavy.

Warning!

Eeek! An issue has come up on SCCA Forums that TOTALLY changes the picture for seat replacements - at least for STX. Due to the airbag built into the stock WRX seat, it can't legally be replaced....period. grrrrrrr
Those with aftermarket seats in STX, consider yourselves warned. I'd hate to see someone get protested on this, as the protest would likely stick.

Anyone protesting it at a local level is someone who has absolutely no confidence in their driving abilities. The weight savings are probably minimal compared to so MANY other factors like driver weights and other unequal modifications. You should have the option of adding weight to counterbalance certain weight saving mods. If the ST classes are realing street touring, then SCCA needs to get on the ball with what people on the street are doing.

I'd agree that in some ways this would be a weenie protest. HOWEVER, the reason a protest would stick is the airbag, not the weight. The SCCA has been firm in stating that driver safetly items not be removed from STS/STX cars. Hence, the reason you can't swap out steering wheels. Unfortunately,Subaru chose to put the side-impact airbag in the seat, not the door frame. Therefore, it looks like we're stuck with stock seats.:(

Unfortunately,Subaru chose to put the side-impact airbag in the seat, not the door frame. Therefore, it looks like we're stuck with stock seats.:(
Has anyone questioned the SCCA about the airbag-in-the-seat issue? I can see why they don't want the steering wheels swapped out in modern cars since it houses the main frontal impact airbag. But some cars nowadays have 6+ airbags in them. I wonder if they will allow seats with airbags to be swapped out if enough people complain?

Is this still true, or has there been any changes regarding the legality of changing our seat? Thanks

I'm waiting till the dust settles on the proposed rules change (August 2003 FasTrack). If all goes well, I'm planning to install Sparco Evo2's next Spring - they fit me like a glove.

damm those air bags.... I don't like them, never did.
Now I have yet-another-reason to hate airbags....
grrrr...
On a side note, does the STI have the same issue replacing seats in SP? In other words, is the removal of safety equipment a rule for the stock class or Street touring only?

Seats & steering wheels are fair game for swapout in SP.
As for Street Touring, I have sent a request to the SEB, asking for an official clarification of 17.2.B, as it relates to seat-mounted airbags. The request applies to the rule as currently worded, as well as the proposed changes. I'll post whatever response I get.
