Looks like a blast. Nice little car you were driving there :)

right hand drive...
yes indeed..
the Pleo was shipped straight from Japan..
a RHD car... took about 1 day to get to the point where i could be aggressive and feel comfortable in the car...
very wide "H" pattern...
but that car was soooo LOUD! :D hehehehe...
you had to hear it to believe it!
i ran to the top in 17:11 - just about what we expected i would do.... remembering this is 1900lbs before i get in the car, AWD and 660cc's... or... a .6 liter.... yes i said "POINT 6..."
3rd in the exhibition class... there were 4 cars but the truck had some issues  hate to see anyone fail to reach the top...
sure was fun tho! really, really enjoyed my time in the "lil toaster!"
gonna miss him :(
me and Robby Unser (who was super nice by the way!)

I got some short videos of your trek through Devil's Playground and on the ride back down... the Pleo seemed faster on the way down :D
I also got a ride in this thing at Huberger.. It was pretty cool. One of the louder cars of the day that's for sure.

Thats a UK registration plate format. Are some of these cars being run under UK registration so in the USA on a temporary basis? I suppose that makes sense if they are Prodrive run cars, what about the USA owned cars? or are these Prodrive run too?

How exactly did the Pleo drive come about?

Jamie coming through Devil's playground. Notice the arm rested casually on the door frame. Right after the curve it was outside the car waving to everyone. Jamie was also the only one with her car sideways on this turn when all the cars were headed DOWN the mountain going back to the start line.

Oh yah, the car is mine but it's still registered in the UK because it has some crazy VIN like "PROGRPN00001006" or something. I'm not quite sure how to get it registered in the US without crashing it twice. Any ideas? As it stands I'll have to export it and re-import it every 12 months which is kinda lame but not impossible to live with...

Here's a new thing for me, being drenched by the crew when you survive a stage... The cold water felt pretty good to me, but Scott kept yelling "My notes! My notes!". I guess co-drivers are just that way, eh? :D

Heh. Yeah it was great fun, I can't wait for the possibly extended Rally format next year. Hopefully you can get your hands on a turbo beast by then and really let it all hang out! The mini-van that shrunk in the wash looked like a good time, but there's no substitute for horsepower in a hill climb...
Thanks for the awesome photos. You're internationally famous, and a talented photographer as well!

sure i'll sign anything Fred... lol... ya kill me :D
i didnt have a co driver as i was not participating in the rally portion of the event.
i ran in the "regular" hillclimb...
the rules that the rally guys ran under were different than ours...
so i had more practice time (yuk! up at 3am!!) and had no navigator, and nobody to read me notes...
it was a bit scary at first, but the more i drove the road, the more confident i felt...
the hillclimb is 12.6 miles and about 150 turns long....
the record is 10:04 - held by Rod Millen.... and Robby Unser is just over 1 second off that pace!! amazing...!
really great event! and i am very, very privledged to have been chosen to pilot the mighty, mighty Toaster! :)

Do you think you will do Pikes Peak again next year in a more competative car? You are obviously popular and very capable. Have you been offered anything from any major teams there?

Stop showing off Fred!! :D;)
I hope they do give Jamie a faster car next year, maybe even something in the Pro Rally class ;) That would be seriously cool and very interesting to see! A codriver with notes is a BIG help on a run like that until you have run that course at least 30 times at speed if your good, most people need 100 runs to get their memory fully sorted.
10 minutes up that mountain is quite something! The challenge of that run is very much along the lines of the challenge you have at the Nurburgring, being 13.5 miles long and 165 corners. Trying to remember how all the corners link in is not easy, the more you run it, the faster you can go in safety, the locals have a BIG advantage.
To put that 10 minutes in perspective, on the ring in a VERY fast car i can do 8:10 seconds, i had about 30 laps experience on that time, the record for a car like the GT2 porsche driven by someone with 1000's of laps is 7:45. Now you throw Gravell, hairpin bend after hairpin bend, altitude etc into the equation and you have one unbelievebly fast run there! At the ring you have some sections where you can do 180MPH for 1 mile or more, there will be nothing close to that on Pikes Peak which makes those top times even more amazing.
I bet my westie up Pikes Peak with Gravel tyres would have been hilareous, if only! ;):D
Today would have traditionally been Pikes Peak race day, they changed it two years ago to make it easier for all to attend.
Happy July 4th my American Cousin's. :D:lol:

I thought another big reason was schedule conflicts with NASCAR or something.
Nick C.
Man the turnout would have been spectacular if they allowed over night camping, but it was a good turnout considering.

This is the oficial press release explaining the change, taken from http://www.ppihc.com/index10.htm
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 80th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the second-oldest auto race in the U.S., has been scheduled for June 29th, 2002.
The selection of the date is congruent with the Hill Climb's current plan to hold the race on the Saturday preceding July 3rd each year. The Hill Climb, also known as the Race to the Clouds, moved from its traditional running date of July 4th to June 30th in 2001.
Race officials believe staging the race on a Saturday benefits all constituents, including the drivers, race teams, sponsors, fans and media as well as the Pikes Peak Highway.
"This date selection is consistent with our agreement with the Pikes Peak Highway in as much that we realized the positive qualities of the date change that we all expected," said Mike Clark, Hill Climb CEO. "While it wasn't without some trials, the June 30th date this year worked very well for our competitors, sponsors and for a great may of the fans. We expect the Saturday date to work even better in 2002."
In its 79-year history the race has been held on various dates, 23 times on Independence Day. But conflicts with the national holiday made the event increasingly more difficult to run. Race officials believe that attendance will continue to increase while planning and execution burdens remain logistically easier with a Saturday race.
"Our agreement with the Highway calls for us to continue to study the positive and negative aspects of the date change," Clark said. "Right now, we're essentially very pleased with our event scheduled for the Saturday before July 3rd and we look forward to a successful race on June 29, 2002."
I was talking to my old man about it and he said part of the reason why they changed the date was because of the Unser's running, and since they raced in more than just the hill climb there would be conflicts in schedules, and since the Unsers were so popular to the Hill Climb and the rest of the racing community, it was one of the factors that went into changing the date.

I was all set to camp out when they cancelled it due to the fires. I hope that I get to do it next year. The "local" that I was sitting next to said that there were some nice protected spots in the rocks up around Devil's Playground. Camping sure would beat the 4 AM traffic jam and sunrise crawl up the mountain.
