Swap foglamp with 5"Hella headlamp? part 1

Arnie 08-29-2001 12:39 AM

Swap foglamp with 5"Hella headlamp?

Here is my situation. I like lots of light but don't want to clutter up the fascia with two or three sets of driving and fog lights. I would ideally love to have some auxilliary lights that fit into the stock fog light hole but is a dual function light. As in, both fog and driving. The only combo lights out there seem to be rectangular and I don't want that.

So, what I was thinking is, if it is possible, to mount 5" (or 7" if it fits) Hella H4 (55/60w) HEADLAMPS in the stock fog location. At that height, they would function pretty well as a fog in low beam and then when I go to the brights, they would be somewhat like a driving light (albeit not as defined, etc.).

What do you light wizards out there think?
-=Ph/\t WRX=- 08-29-2001 01:09 AM

I have some Piaa 510's or was it 520's sitting around the garage, I wanted to know if it is possible to swap the factory foglamps as well or if anyone else has done something like this.
Arnie 08-29-2001 01:42 AM

Lots of people have

swapped to better foglights. Check the "mods" section and there is an install for the PIAA 80XT's.
Subie Gal 08-29-2001 10:45 AM

Piaa 80XT's or the Hella 500's will fit - believe you need an adapter bracket, but a lot of the guys have done this swap.

7" lights will NOT fit in the stock fog location...

search.... read some of the past threads...
the info is out there...

WTH? She posted an answer, then suggested searching for more complete info. What's wrong with that? If you have a personal problem, this isn't the place for it.

Arnie 08-29-2001 07:16 PM

Wowsers!

Where is my thread going!?:D

I wanted info for headlamp mounting in the stock fog location, just to repeat my original question. I did do a search and as far as I know, no one has tried this. I assume I would need some baskets for the lights, etc.

As an aside, I don't find SubieGal's comments sarcastic but I'm also assuming they were not meant for me.:p

This whole topic of telling people to search is a touchy one. it does sound beligerent sometimes when the first answer to a question is "Do a search", and then end of story. I'm sure its not meant that way. Maybe the search function needs to be made more prominent somehow in the design of the website. Right now its this tiny link and it needs to be made more visible since it seems to be pretty important. Or perhaps when one comments with "Do a search" they could be more helpful in suggesting under what topics one could search for. Especially for Newbies who are not familiar with the lingo or brand names or whatnot. I think it would be much more constructive and less of a chance of insult if one gave search topics with their "go search" suggestion.

So anyways, does anyone have help for me?
Subie Gal 08-29-2001 07:27 PM

Arnie 08-30-2001 01:24 AM

Hey Subie Gal "the sarcastic but trying her damndest to be helpful one"

 Okay, if you look carefully and don't just glaze over my original subject line, it says 5"(as in 5 inch!) HEADLAMP!!! Not Hella 500 auxiliary lights. Not PIAA80XT's. Has anyone actually read my post?! I say this twice or thrice, perhaps. I know all about the 500's and PIAA80XT's (see past posts) and I was wondering about installing HEADLAMPS into the stock fog locations! Geez. Talk about confusion here.:)

So for the third time...does anyone have any info/ideas about installing these headlamps into the stock fog light locations? These are 5" inch headlamps for a 4 headlamp system.

I must ask in, everyone's defense...does my inch (") sign come up as a "0 0" (zero zero) in the subject line on their computers?
CosmoTheCat 08-30-2001 02:52 AM

Arnie - Nope. It's 5".
4-headlight systems don't use H4 bulbs. I suppose hella has some round ones for say, the Jeep Wrangler, that might work.

Please don't jump at me for suggesting this, but have you looked at the PIAA Pro 80 Racing? NOT the 80XT. The Racing version is a little deeper and it uses H4 bulbs, so it's got a Hi/Low beam. It would probably mount to the Kartboy mounts with little difficulty. It wold stick out farther though. Compare the dimensions of the 80XT with the 80 Racing to see.

I installed the PIAA XT80Pro lights in pencil beam. They are absolutely fantastic! Way brighter than I had expected. I changed the way the bracket is installed which reccessed the light deeper in the bumper cover than most installations. check it out at http://users2.ev1.net/~subaru/Piaa_xt80pro_bracket.htm

think they will fit the wrx. im looking for a bright fog light...going to do some mods to the blickers and take the day time lights out. ..the blinker will be a parking light (take the orange thing out) and the little one will be the blinker. Is there an easy way to run the fog lights alone with the parking lights? where are those directions?

Original question

Now, back to the orginal question. There is a set of lamps listed on the Japanese Cibie website...but since I don't read Japanese, I'm just guessing that they actually have them.
http://www.cibie.com/Page/FogLamp/ScOscarSETforIMPREZZA.htm

The second set list H4 bulbs being used. They do stick out a bit, but you have a high low bulb much like the Bi_Oscar. (Specs on the BI-OSCAR are at http://www.cibieusa.com/cibie_aux_lighting.htm ).

I spoke to them yesterday, but forgot to ask if the Japanese lamp sets were available here. I would have loved to have gotten the H4 set from Japan, but ended up getting the Lampset from ScoobySport instead. Now I will have to pick up a set of Fogs from cibieusa to mount in front of the radiator.

Anyway, according to the Japanese site, the high/low set of replacements do exist somewhere...guess I'll try emailing the site to see if anyone cares to respond in English.

Good luck.
subarumantoo 08-30-2001 11:38 AM

I gotta throw my 2 cents in about Hondas. I used be be a Honda tech at a dealership. I was also a Subaru tech. Anyway, Honda are the most technologically advanced vehicles on the road, bar none. I will agree that there are a whole lot of "riced" out Hondas out there, plus there are a trillion of them on the road. That is one thing I like about my RS is that I almost never see another one! But please don't rag on Hondas, they are AWESOME!

Nick
Subie Gal 08-30-2001 11:51 AM

i dont rag on em... (honda's)
i dont have any ill will or bad feelings for em at all...

as a matter of fact, i am pals w/the local Si guys and we've done lunch and all that good stuff... really dig the true car enthusiasts and these guys really know there stuff....

but i dont dig the "hon-duh harassers" out there..
call em "ricers or boy racers" or whatever you will.. they are negligent on the road, dangerous and totally give car enthusiasts a bad name and profile..

dont get me wrong...
i know the difference between hon-duh and Honda owners...
didnt mean to offend... been using "hon-duh" for so long, it's just a habit to type it out like that... ooooooooops....

i'll try n curb that habit of mine

jRS2.5, horatio 102, I thank you!

For finally, actually addressing my post. Just looking over this entire thread, it has become 95% irrelevant crud, with nothing to do with the original question. So thanks, you two.

Okay back to business: horatio, I found on the Susqeuhana site, a Hella headlamp:
71156 - 5*" Round H1 For 4 headlamp systems, with 60/55W H4 bulb
This is the 5 incher I was describing. I've never actually seen it in person and am not sure it it actually is both high/low. I have not seen the PIAA Racing. You say this uses high/low H4 bulb? This could be what I am looking for. Thanks for the tip, i'll give it a looksee.

jRS2.5: Yeah, I looked at the Bi-Oscar but from the information (very little) that I got I wasn't able to tell if it actually was a high/low kinda auxiliary light. The name sort of implies it but I found no concrete info. Just different diagrams with light output patterns that all of the other lights had as well. I'll check your links out.

Once again, thanks so much you two for the RELEVANT info.:p

Arnie

PS SubieGal, I never took offense to any of your comments, just wondering how you mistook my original question for something regarding Hella 500's. I thought I was pretty clear the entire time as to what my interest/question was regarding.
jRS2.5 08-30-2001 06:04 PM

Arnie,
The Bi-Oscar is truely a two beam system, but Its too big to fit in the current Fog-Lamp Position. (It's huge!). I've used it before on other applications (big trucks). However, the Japanese site has a smaller version, with an H4 bulb (high/low style bulb).
That version is called OSCAR COMPE H4 set, and has a picture of and Impreza with one. Unfortunately, its all in Japanese. (although the verbage that is in English says H3 bulb with 60/55w, which doesn't make a lot of sense).
Bottom line, it looks like they make one somewhere! But, they don't have an email link on their website!! so let me know if you have any luck.
Also, some time ago (last year or two), WARN was making high/low aux lights in two sizes, the smaller of which might fit.
Let me know if you have any luck.

John

Also, I too noticed an exceptional amount of garbage NOT related to your question.

I was thinking about putting H4 for the fog, too.
I put HID for the headlight and it is really bright, but because HID doesn't have Hi beam, I need Hi beam.
I thought HID is bright enough but it's only bright where it is aimed at.
My choise of the H4 fog will be A.P Rally. It is hard to get item but I will have them soon.

either direct swap like this

or with bumper pod like this

they are expensive but I'll go for it.
CosmoTheCat 08-31-2001 03:10 AM

I swear I wasn't smoking anything. I saw them somewhere. I'm looking now, but I can't find them on PIAA's website. ARGH. I could have sworn that's where I saw them the other day.

HAHA! I'm unstoppable! I found it. For whatever reason there isn't a link to it in their drop down menu. so if you go into the "complete list of lamps and bulbs" you'll find it. But here:
http://www.piaa.com/displayLamp.php3?inc=80r.html

Like I said, they're deeper than the 80 Pro XT. 5 1/2" versus 2 7/8"
Oh. bummer. It appears as though the mount does not swivel like on the Pro XT. It needs to be bolted on top or underneath something instead.

Sorry for getting your hopes up.

But for the bumper-top mounted lights, those would work SWEET. :)
Arnie 08-31-2001 02:50 PM

Good info guys!

GoGoGo, may I ask what your source is on the AP's? Also the price? i remember seeing these in one of my Japanese Impreza books but could not locate a source. They are a little big but what the hey, you can't have it all. Do you have any idea what the beam pattern would be like with these units? By the way could you give me the url where you found the AP info?

horatio, I eventually found the Racing 80, but it had the problems you mentioned plus the overall diameter/heigth is just too big. Seems like a good unit if I had the space!

jRS2.5, I think I saw that as well somewhere but the info is pretty sparse. I'll keep searching. It looks like these would be as hard to get as the AP's.

I am currently mailing with another member who has 7 inch Bosch headlamps that he is trying to install. We'll see how that goes. it will be a wiring challenge. I will have to compare relative costs and effort involved (plus availabilty) before I decide which way Ill go.

I think we all realize that this mounting location is not ideal for driving lights/highbeams but I think its better than nothing.

Thanks again for the good info.
scottsubarus 08-31-2001 03:34 PM

has anyone had trouble after installing a set of Piaas ie: wiggling around in the mount?
Tried installing Piaa 40's in a version 4 bumper with the subaru factory brackets for the version 4 bumper, and the lights wiggled around too much...looked bad while driving at night. Other members said "modify" a bracket . Since I'm not an engineer what do people do? I can't take back the 40s and really woulden't too as they did look real good in the bumper.
go go go 08-31-2001 11:16 PM

Arnie,
here you go http://www5.wind.ne.jp/as-plan
that's AP-rally's website. It's in Japanese but I think you can browse through. Price is in there, and they are expensive.
There is a choice of Fog/Spot/Driving patterns.
My source is not in US. I'll go Japan to pick them up.
If there is a similar system available in US, I'd love to see it but so far, I can only find them in UK or Japan. I haven't seen any aftermarket lights with Impreza bracket here.
I love that bumper pod!
