This is what Carlos meant by he had no spikes. His tires look pretty good here, but he was MAD. He just shook hands, to autographs.

Loeb haulin ass at the end of SS1, heading toward Hagfors. This streach of road was so fast, you seriously need to see it first hand.

There is no way anyone got a good shot here, the cars were doing 110ish. Anyone that thinks that wing onthe SubaruWRC2003 car is goofy will think twice after this stage.

PSE again. The powder blue is pretty slick. The model comes with the UK 2.0L STi motor. Nothing really special on the inside other tha blue seats and a solid aluminum round shift nob.

Nicky Grist.

I later had lunch with him at the WRC production trailer. He is a very nice gentlemen as you from the Rim documented. He was busy doing interviews during service.

Typical Swedish Highway. The rally cars had to transit this 50mile route 8 times during the rally. Amazing really.

Jorgen.

The nice swede I met randomly that offered to show me around the rally. He wants to see Pikes Peak. I'll host him and his dad in June. This guy is funny bhist.

Looks like you had a blast.
WRXedUSA 02-12-2004 11:22 PM

Typical Swedish house. They are all painted red for tradition. There is a large copper mine north of this area called Falun. The copper dust is mixed to create cheap, durable paint.

WRXedUSA 02-12-2004 11:26 PM

Evo6. I was told by Jorgen that TME's are a dime a dozen in Stockholm.

WRXedUSA 02-12-2004 11:39 PM

Overall. Great rally. Best one to spectate even as the SDIC.co.uk guys said at the prisegiving. Jorgen and his dad make the trip extra special. The access to the drivers is spectacular. I met Markko, Carlos, Petter, Francios, Loeb's wife, Nicky Grist, Toshi, Alister, and many, many others.

Worth the trip spend 2 weeks there, a good solid week prior to the rally and a few days after. Rent a car, hookup with local tourist offices for cheap lodging, buy food at the grocery store.

I suggest that any of you wanting to experience World Championship level rally, give Sweden a shot.

Well done. Best $1900 I ever spent. Trip of a lifetime.

Many memories.

I still have the side effects of jetlag. I still think its one day ahead. I would love to meet up with you guys and caravan, but I think I will go to ADAC rally Deutschland with some nice chaps I met in sweden that were part of the SIDC.co.uk club. They said Germany is cheaper, and the drive to Trier is nothing from south London.

ANYONE wanting to see a rally, PM me. I will go. I will go to spain, germany or GB.

Going Sweden alone was fun, but taggin along with a member would be fun too.
StuBeck 02-13-2004 01:17 AM

Wow, looks great...amazed at the cheap price too.
Bonzo 02-13-2004 01:40 AM

great pics and story.

Sweden is my fav rally and will someday attend.

Were you warm enough?
Protege Menace 02-13-2004 02:49 AM

Ditto!
WRXedUSA 02-13-2004 01:04 PM

Was I warm?

Yes, I wore wick n dry socks, with woolen over socks, and wick underwear, that plus my Sorel boots and a fleece pullover with that tan Gore-Tex Jacket was good. I also had some fancy 2-part gloves that wicked moisture and broke the wind. Hand warmers arent a bad idea either. It wasnt THAT cold, only abou 10-25*F.

Cheap?

Nothing cheap about that trip. Airfare 900, rental car 250 and I spent 400 that I still dont know where it went. The dollar lost value while I was over there, so it hurt more.

I love the WRC, its the only sport you can sightsee and experience other cultures while immersing yourself in rally.

Need special access to drivers?

Nope. They are just THAT available. I just hungout at the airport and met the Ford group with Malcolm Wilson and Micheal Park. I hung out in Service all day Sunday, and they were just right there. Tip, if you chill out at the end of time control, you can get great access, for me, tha netted Mikko, Petter & Carlos.

My word of advice, go with another person, to split costs, researcha dn book airfare early, stay in cheap accomodations.

Hey, did the guys do the transit sections with their spikes?
Hey, did the guys do the transit sections with their spikes?
On the 50k route between Hagfors and Karlstad, they used what looked like normal road-studded tires. Studded tires are required in Sweden between November and April. My Opel Astra really got around good, didnt need a 4x4 really.

If you look at Markko in this pic, he is driving on the snow in the medians. He is transiting between Hagfors and SS10, Rammen. They drive on competition spikes during the rally, but the long drive back to Karlstad, they stop in Hagfors service and don road tires.

Great pics
That looks like a hugely fun trip.....good for you. Great pics, thanks for posting.

Opel Astra: Any other impressions of your rental you'd care to share? I have rented this car in Europe as well, and was very very impressed with it. Not a lot of power, but a very rev-happy, smooth little motor, and an incredibly balanced suspension that was on the firm side. That car handled everything we could put it through in the German/Austrian Alps. I normally try to rent a Miata, which is spec'd more firmly in Europe, but the Astra rivaled it even though it is FWD. By contrast, the 1.6 Golfs I have rented were very slow and way softly suspended. Alfa 147 Hatch is nice and fun too.
WRXedUSA 02-14-2004 02:54 PM

The Opel Astra.

It was a good car. For a GM, I was impressed. Gears 3-5 were all the same though. Real quiet car, shifted good. The reverse lockout caught me in a jimmy once. I would compare it to a Chevrolet Cavalier.

It had good power, looked good, plenty of room. The only dislikes was that it seemed to get poor gas milage. I only goy 280km on a half tank. I was watching the needle move at times.

The rally area was generally flat, so I really have no idea how much power it really has.

Overall, 2 thumbs up.
