SWRT driver Sarrazin to rally an Aston Martin
I was hoping for a jacked-up gravel beastie, but a Tarmac Rally Vantage V8 is pretty cool...

From WRC.com:

Aston Martin in French rally

Subaru World Rally Team driver Stephane Sarrazin is to drive the first Aston Martin to enter a major rally for a half century on Friday, at the start of the French tarmac championship Lyon-Charbonnieres Rhone Rally. Tests started this morning (Tuesday 18th) in France with initial work setting-up the suspension of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage V8. Sarrazin and codriver Stephane Prevot run as number 15 in the special GT series category, up against cars such as 911 GT3. Like rallies in Belgium, standard production GT cars are allowed to compete on this event, whereas big sports and GT cars have been barred from FIA World Rally Championship since the end of 1986.

This car has been prepared by Prodrive in Britain for the motor sportsman Frederic Dor. A Prodrive spokesman explained "the French federation have listed a series of cars which can run in the category. The Porsche 911 cars offered a benchmark for this project. The Aston looks like being more suitable with a shorter bodywork, longer wheelbase and wider track, though the Porsche is lighter. The power and torque of the two cars are similar. So far the only preparation work has been to add safety equipment and a sump guard. The initial reaction of Stephane (Sarrazin) is that the car is inherently better balance than expected".

The last recorded major win for an Aston Martin was on the 1956 RAC Rally in Britain when a private DB2/4 was driven by Lyndon Sims. The only works Astons in rallying were the year before when three cars were entered on the Monte Carlo Rally where Maurice Gatsonides finished seventh overall and the Grand Prix driver Peter Collins finished 96th!

This is so cool. I can't wait for some video of the event.

That's gonna be pretty neat to watch coverage of.

in a 400-hp+ V8 Vantage, Sarrazin's problem is not going to be speeding up...it'll be trying to slow down!

oh to be a fly on the wall (or Stephane's codriver)for this adventure.

O, my f'ing god, the History of it all...

PS--do not forget that A-M and Audi have considerable corporate DNA in common. remember Le Mans, ennybodday?

You are thinking of Bently and Audi, those are both owned by VW.

A-M is owned by Ford.

Anyways, that would be sweet to watch. I imagine it's somewhat similar to the vids I've seen of F3000 cars doing hill climbs in Europe, f*ing nuts!
mike270 04-18-2006 11:19 PM

Should be interesting to watch him in the Aston Martin for the ALMS too.

Aston Martin Racing goes rallying
Independent rally teams will soon be able to compete in the worlds most exclusive rally car, the Aston Martin Rally GT. The new car has been developed by Aston Martin Racing, a partnership between Prodrive and Aston Martin.
The Rally GT is based on the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, but extensively re-engineered by Prodrive. The motorsport specialist has combined its experience of running the Aston Martin DBR9s in international sports car racing with more than 20 years of rallying experience, to create this new car. As part of its development programme, the Rally GT has already competed in three French Rally Championship events, coming second in the Series GT class on its debut at the Lyon to Charbonniers Rally.

As with the DBR9, the Rally GT uses a standard road car chassis which is fitted with a Prodrive-designed roll cage for safety and increased torsional rigidity. The engine is closely based on the all alloy road car 4.3 litre V8 unit but has been tuned to make it more flexible and responsive for the demands of rallying.

The suspension on the Rally GT carries over the road cars wishbones, but has new competition Eibach springs and three-way adjustable EXE-TC dampers. The standard road car transmission is kept on the rally car, but this can be upgraded to a six-speed, close ratio dog engagement gearbox, developed specifically for the Rally GT.

A limited number of Rally GTs will be produced by Aston Martin Racing and the first cars will be available at the end of 2006.

Probably would do better than the Impreza WRC on tarmac, though.

Ok, maybe not, but honestly, is there really a demand for an Aston rally car? Looks gorgeous, but unless that thing weighs as light as a feather...

The teams that will campaign this will most likely not be WRC teams (I doubt it'd competitive if even legal).

There are other rally series that have allowances for this kind of rally car - like the one Sarrazin drove in the original post of this article - which it would likely be competitive in. It probably doesn't have a huge demand for it, but I'm sure they'll find one or two teams that'll purchase these.

Oh, I know it's not a WRC car. It's a direct competitor to the Porsche 911 GT3 in the GT class (European Rally Championship?), but I didn't really think that it was a popular class to begin with. I wonder what the weight difference is between this V8 Vantage and the 996 GT3.
