tail light kill switch

has anyone done this mod to a 03 wrx yet?
| pityr | 04-03-2005 02:58 PM |
a switch to kill your tail lights? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.
Hope you mean something else...

| SUBYDOODIE | 04-03-2005 03:03 PM |
actually... people do it when they "race" on the freeway at night... so that when you swerve in and out ... if there happens to be a cop like half a mile back, he won't see lights swerving
| Pre-diddy | 04-03-2005 03:10 PM |
Yea its to make it harder for cops to follow you at night. Retarded.
| Rogue3000 | 04-03-2005 03:32 PM |
Also some people use it so that if they pass a cop while speeding they can slam on the brakes and get down to speed without the cop noticing.
| boost junkie | 04-03-2005 03:37 PM |
this is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. if your headlights are on your taillights should be too. there's no need to make the road that much more dangerous for other drivers.
| spongejosh | 04-03-2005 03:37 PM |
anyone know how to wire up a headlight kill switch? better yet, a brake light kill switch?

or even better, a kill switch while the car is in motion, then the cop wouldnt even hear you!

no seriously if you're dumb enough to want to evade the law you deserve yourself and shouldn't get help on the internet.

wow, 8 posts judging the idea, 0 offering any help. good 'ol NASIOC.
Anyway, I know nothing about wiring, but if you need a wiring diagram for the tail lights/license plate illumination, etc, I could help you out.

here's an idea... put a relay in the ground wires coming from the tails, and wire a switch to the relay.
no ground, no light.
but judging from how INCREDIBLY illegal and hazardous this idea is, i'm going to let the idiot figure it out for himself.

why don't you just wire the foglights to just come on all bythemself my friends used to do that even got pulled over for it but cop let him go
| Uncle Scotty | 04-03-2005 07:37 PM |
....my current car is the first one that i have not done this 'mod' to.....it is very difficult to be followed/chased at night if your tail lights don't work.....i have the wiring diagram....so mebbe this is something to ponder soon......

Be sure to address your tag lights as well if you're planning to do this mod. Not having them on will add further to the stealth. However, that'll also get you pulled over. I found out when the harness plug in my wagon worked itself loose.

Another forum I visit, a few people have wired up a switch to turn on their reverse lights whenever they want. So when someone is riding your butt, jam the brakes, flip the switch for the reverse lights, and watch their reaction in the mirror
I wouldn't do it on the highway, but on backroads when soccer moms in SUV's think it's okay to do 50 in a 25, I'd do it all the time :)
But I have to go with everyone else, you're dumb if you do this to get away from the police. If you're breaking the law, you deserve what you get. And if you get caught with your taillights out, and the cop sees them just magically come on, you'll probably get an even bigger ticket/fine.

It's pretty easy. First remove the positive terminal from the battery [you must do the positive terminal first]. After you've safely placed the terminal in your left hand, lean across the motor and hold on to the opposite fender. This will help to make sure that your brake lights won't come on on the freeway. Ever.
[please don't actually do this]

keep in mind that this mod is illegal in all states, that is why theres no one telling you a step by step instruction on doing that. And besides, your not suppose to "race" in the interstates nor any highways. Just drive what a normal driver should drive. If you want to go "racing" in the highways, you can always sell your subie and get a civic.

Man you can get a lot of flack for this kind of stuff. If he wans to do it let him. It's not that bad of an idea. I remember a long time ago when i first got into cars i wanted to do this. Yeah its dumb to run from the cops at high speeds and endanger peoples lives, i agree with that. However if you flick off the tailights to duck down a few backstreets or sumthin so what. i think most everyone has sped by a cop and thought, "oh crap", and ducked down a sidestreet.
At least hes not installing a nitrous-fed-carbon-replica-led-3-deck-wing.

Here's a helpful hint, when you wire in a "brake light delete" use your cruise contol cancel switch...it's in a good ergonmic place so you can quickly and easily actuate it instead of fumbling around trying to actuate a switch mounted somewhere else when u notice a cop is behind you.
| Vampyr | 09-28-2005 10:28 PM |
Why don't you just disconnect the tail lights all together?
I mean, why even use them?
And if you are trying to avoid cops all together... just shut down the car and cruise away in neutral? If you swerve in and out of traffic, a cop will see you no matter what, because the person behind you has headlights that make your car visible.
The bad thing is if you forget to turn your brake lights back on, and someone decides to hit you for the hell of it, then you are at fault due to your lights not working... and then you may lose your license when your taillight switch is discovered.

It is a good idea... but really not a good use for it. If you're into this to get away from cops then you are an idiot... the cops will get you unless you are going WAYYY too fast. I ran from a cop once and i know the only reason i got away with it was because i was being really stupid a month and a half ago because it was a week after i got my licence going 80 in a 35 and he had no chance at all to get me but only because i was being so stupid, i guess this is why 16 year olds have high insurance... If you're gonna use this mod to avoid a ticket for like 35 in a 25 then it's no use and you're probably gonna get ****ed even harder when you get caught using it.
On another note... It would be pretty sweet to have a switch that turns on your brake lights with no brakes for tailgaters... still funny. no accident.

Wiring a "killswitch" is easy.
1. find the main posi or ground wire.
2. Put in a switch
3. Don't do it to your brakes - if you're good you don't need a brake killswitch (use red foglights)
4. ???
5. profit

.....so you plant to scare off tailgates by slamming on your brakes w/o them seeing it?
Great idea - especially effective if you have plans for an overnight hospital visit and a new car (not to count f....in up the traffic for me on the way back from work).
+1 for IQ

i hate to join this conversation, but i believe he meant
scare tailgaters by turning on the brake lights manually and NOT depressing the brakes.
back when tail lights & brake lights were less exoctic (one dual filament bulb)
i would sometimes in the day time do this to tailgaters:
take foot off gas
turn on headlights (which turns on tail lights showing red in back)
wait a beat for them to brake
mash go pedal
of course, i was younger then, and more easily amused.

The only benefit for this mod would be to evade a stalker or road rager who is following you at night. For that, not a bad idea.
| drivin blind | 09-29-2005 09:26 AM |
All of our old patrol cars had this mod. Experience told us to make sure that our cut out switch would light up when it was activated. Should you forget you shut them off, you may attract the attention you're trying to avoid. My .02

well you could always just turn off your lights if u see a cop come out behind you and let the DRL's do their work, I've done it before. Your tails don't illuminate when the DRL's are on
