The SuperTones are on and...Get the heck outta my way! ::BEEEEPP!!::

My rendition of Hella SuperTone Horns.

::clears throat::

BEEEEEEEEPPPPPP!!!!!!!! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] Auuuoooogggaa aaauuoooooggaaaa! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] AHHH! We're givin' her all she's got, cap'n! She cannot take much more 'o this! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] Too...Much...Juice...[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/eek.gif[/img] My brain is shattering!! AHHH!

::bows:: Thank you.

And this is just while hooked up to the stock wiring system. I'd like to honestly take the time to thank those people who helped me figure out what the hell I was doing..Horatio102 and WRXPRESS...Thanks guys [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

When I brave going back in to throw on the relay and hook it up to its own wiring harness, I'll probably come calling again [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]

Next project will probably be to hook up the stock horn to the harness, as well (which I believe I can manage...If I only had more wire I would have done it tonight...All I need is a bit more, and some new connectors, and I can just split the 1 stock wire into three, one for each hella, and then one for the stock horn...Anyone know which connector on the stock horn is the ground?? I forgot to make a note of it when I took the connectors off to attatch the hellas)...Then I should be makin' some REAL noise...

These things really are much louder than stock, by at LEAST a factor of 2x. They also have a much meaner sounding tone ('EEERRRRRNNNGGGGGGGG!!!!!') instead of the 'beeeeeeep'....Once I get a harness solely for the hellas built up (need time to relax before undertaking this [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]) I expect the sound level to go up (people have sound it's more powerful off their own harness).

At any rate, good horns!

Edit: Oops, I just noticed that I put caps in the subject and just a few posts ago SG 'reminded' someone not to do it...Sorry mods! But you have to understand the SuperTone volume [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

heh heh heh.

Coo.

To me... wiring's a simple thing. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] You've got +, you've got -, and you've got um. That's it. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
Fido 05-02-2001 03:37 AM

To me you've got a +, you've got a -, and you've got a ::electrical zapping cutting into the sentence:: ow!
WRXPRESS 05-02-2001 06:29 AM

That's great news man. Congrats!
Now that I have them hooked up I keep looking for excuses to use them. I honk at birds cars driving too close to the line. I have become a horn junkie.[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] I waiting for the joke.
I'm just waiting to see a sign 'Honk if your ________(fill in the blank) I'm sure they will understand my enthusiasm.[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

Hmmmm... I have the Supertones in my car, but I used the stock horn wiring system. Will it make much difference if I use the wire harness that came with the horns? If so, why?

Thanks!
remarcable 05-02-2001 09:09 AM

I used the stock wiring positions and mounts.

In my Legacy it appeared that the stock horns used the mounting bracket as the ground??

<img src=http://www.remarcable.net/misc/legacy_outback/mods/hella/supertone1.jpg>

I didn't mount them behind the grill because that would require a small amount of effort on my part and I'm lazy. You also couldn't see them there anyway (because of my lights).

Fido 05-02-2001 10:19 AM

My Supertones didn't come with a harness, but from what I hear if you mount them directly to the battery via their own harness, they're louder [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]
Woo-hoo! I knew SG would understand [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]
I've only honked mine twice...I don't want to give anyone a heart attack hehe...

Edit: Damn power surge right when I was replying to this post...had to type it...Lucky me my comp has a really nice protector...

Where is everyone buying their Supertones?

I tried to find them locally on a whim a couple of weeks ago (needed something to mod on my WRX and was out of things to do)

Couldn't find 'em local. Online?

I need a new horn. I killed my Fiamm air horns. Too much dirt, mud, and water I guess. Does anyone have a sound clip of the supertones?
nuburu2 05-02-2001 09:14 PM

Dan and John, Believe what we're saying when we describe these "SuperTones as L-O-U-D and tight!!! Personally, I like them much better than the Hella air-horns I had on my last wagon. Somehow they fit with the character of the car, but with wider shoulders and a heavy dose of steroids! [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

I have my Super tones also. I didn't put them in the front behind the grill cause it said in the instructions to protect them from dirt, and water so they will last longer. Does anyone know how to install the relay that came with them. They're loud now. But I want Super Loud!!! Thanks!

mike...
CosmoTheCat 05-03-2001 03:56 PM

OK? Got a relay?
It's four male spade connections are marked as such:
30 = connect it to an inline fuse and to the + term on battery.
87 = Connect this to the + side of your horns.
86 = I believe it's the ground. Plug the stock horn 'black' wire into it.
85 = This is the switch control. Plug it into the 'black w/blue stripe' from the stock horn.

Then all you have left is to connect the - terminal on both horns to the chassis of the car somewhere. I'd just make a short 3" jumper and use a ring terminal to ground it where the horns are mounted.

Wham, bam, thank you ma'am. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Zip tie the wires out of the way, and you're good.
remarcable 05-03-2001 05:18 PM

I just got to use mine again today.

A bling bling oldsmobile was in front of me in the left lane and I came up behind him and wasn't even on his rear, I was just sorta chilling out waiting for him to move over. He was doing 45 in a 60.

All of a sudden the blinger starts brake checking me! I was a little annoyed but figured maybe he saw a squirrel or something. Then he starts doing it more and more! Brake checking on a highway in rush hour traffic???

So I lay into the Supertones for a good minute (literally) and he finally gets the idea and moves over. As I drive by he throws a bottle of sprite or something at my window, however it bounced right off and exploded all over the side of his car!!!

No damage to my car at all.

What is wrong with people these days? I wasn't even 4 car lengths behind him when he started with the braking crap.

I guess having your car make bling blinging noises all the time while you are driving could get annoying, maybe that was it.

I love the sound of the supertones. They really sound great when you hold them down.
garface 05-03-2001 08:53 PM

How would you go about grounding to the chassis. Where and what type of connection? Thanks.
Fido 05-04-2001 04:15 AM

Ground to chassis:
Take a 3" long piece of wire (or so)
Put a ring terminal on one end (with the ring large enough to fit over the mounting bolt)
Put a female spade connector on the other.
Slide the female connector onto the male GND on the horn.
Place the mounting bolt through the ring terminal. Put one of those serrated ring lock washers between the ring terminal and the car. Bolt it down tight.
[img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]
It should have a good ground.
garface 05-04-2001 02:56 PM

I am very unelectronic. Do you just pass the wire through the holes and twist it, or do you have to put a connector on the end of each wire and then snap it into or around the horn connections? What is a spade connector and ring terminal. Talk to me like I'm five, please. Thanks.
Fido 05-04-2001 03:49 PM

Ok, go find an automotive stero type store (I've found they had the best selection of electronic components). You'll need to buy some wire there. I'm running 18 gauge currently, but will probably up it to 16 or 14 (the SMALLER the number gauge, the LARGER the wire is) when I connect the horns directly to the battery. Ask them for wire and explain that you'll be using it to wire horns in your car. You'll need a whole bunch. Next, buy a baggie of something called 'male disconnects' (or male quick disconnects...They have a prong), and another baggie of 'female disconnects' (or female quick disconnects...they have a slot). Buy them to match your wire size (they come in numbers like this: 16-14, or 22-18...That means that they're the right size for 16-14 gauge wire, or 22-18, etc). If you're gonna run two wires into one disconnect, buy one size bigger (I ran two 18 gauge into one 16-14 disconnect with a perfect fit). Buy some electrical tape.
Ok, the little connectors sticking out of the horns are male disconnects, so those female disconnects you bought are going to slip onto those. The connectors that are attatched to the wires on the stock horn are female, so the male disconnects that you bought are gonna slide into those. The stock wires and connectors just pull off the stock horn. Ok, make sure you have a crimper cause you'll need it. Make one set of two wires about 2' long, and then another about 3' long. Strip the end of each wire about 5/8" (that's what the boxes of connectors say, at least)...Ok, you should have 4 wires, 2 that are 2 feet long, and 2 that are 3 feet long. Take one end of each of those 4 wires and put a female disconnect on it (slide it on the wire till it's inside, then take your crimper and put the disconnect and the wire at the end and let it sit at the neck of the disconnect, not the open end, but the end you put the wire into, and then crunch it. Ok, you've just crimped the wire [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] Now duct tape that bad boy around where you put the wire in, just to be safe [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]...Do this for all 4 wires, so you'll have 4 wires with 1 female disconnect on each. Ok, now stick those female disconnects and the wires behind the horns, and slide the female disconnects over the male disconnects (which are on the horns). Make a note of which wire is attatched to which prong on the back of the horn. The prong that has '30' stamped on it is the +. The prong that has '0' on it is the - (or ground). Run those wires to near your stock horn. Take the wires that are attatched to the + of your horns (there are two, one for each horn), twist the ends of the wire together a little bit, then put a male disconnect on the end of them both and crimp. Do this for the other set of wire, too, so you have one + and one - set. The wire connecting to the stock horn with the stripe on it is the + wire. Connect that wire (with the stripe on it) to the wires from the + on your horns. It's a female connector on the stock wire, so just slide your male connector inside, and duct tape [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]...The black wire without a stripe on the stock wires is the - (or ground). Connect the other set of wires to that in the same way you connected the +. Honk horn. Enjoy [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

I learned all this from putting mine on...And I'm still not sure what it is that I've done [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img] This is how you connect the hella's to the stock wiring. If you want to do it directly to the battery ask Horatio [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/tongue.gif[/img]...Hope I've been helpful. I know I wasn't always so clear, but I tried to explain exactly what to do (I, too, would rather someone explains in explicit detail when I totally don't understand something)...

Edit: Spelling and a bit of clarification...

horatio102, you said connect 30 from the relay to an inline fuse. Where's that? Do you buy one and crimp it on the wire or what?
See if I got this right.
1. You take the "30" prong from the relay and attach it to a in line fuse to the POS + side of the battery.
2. Then you take a wire from the "87" prong of the relay and attach it to the "30" or POS + of the Hella horns.
3. Now you take the "0" or NEG - of the Hella horns and connect it to the ground.
4. You said take the "86" prong of the relay and connect it to the "BLACK wire" of the stock horn.
5. Finally crimp or connect the "Black w/Blue stripe wire" to the "85" prong of the relay.

If that's correct then it's easy as HELLA!

Tell me if I'm off the mark or dead on. Thanks!

You can connect to the negative of the battery instead of grounding? Is that the same?

Yeah, buddy!
Fido 05-05-2001 04:23 AM

No! Don't connect it to the - side of the battery...connect the '0' (or -) of the horns to some random piece of metal, or you can connect it tot he solid black wire on the stock wiring harness.

Since I used the stock wiring harness to hook them up, I just used the black wire.

Edit: Yes, the supertones sound like the first horn in that sound file...They just sound so...soo....my ears hurt [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img]

Good thing I checked with you guys first. That could've sucked. Thanks!

mike...
CosmoTheCat 05-05-2001 11:15 AM

Well in all honesty, you could connect the - side on the horns to the - on the battery. It's just a waste of wire, anybody looking under the hood will look at you funny, and it's always best to use the shortest ground possible.

I could have reversed my +/- for the stock horn. Check it out first. If it sounds a little funny, reverse them. I highly doubt that my air compressor is running backwards though. [img]http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/smilies/smile.gif[/img] It might be interesting listening to the horns sucking air.

I don't know if the Supertones come with an inline fuse or not. If they don't, go to Rat Shack or any auto parts store. A little 5 amp fuse will do. I was wrong about auto parts stores carrying relays though. (Sorry Jordan).
wieger54 05-05-2001 11:40 AM

If I recall the diagram which came with the horns said to have a 20A inline fuse. I don't have the paper in front of me cause I'm at work. Thanks again.
