This is why you need to be careful with replicas..My spoiler flew off!!!

I dont know how, or what happened. but i got in my car, looked in my rear view mirror (which is somewhat blocked by my REPLICA 22b rear bumper) and backed up. i drive around tuning my car....start to head on back home....i look in my rear view bumper when im almost home and notice something very odd....i have a full view of everything...MY SPOILER IS GONE!!!! I traced my tracks and didnt find it. I hope to god no one got hurt. I seriously doubt anyone did....since i didnt see any accidents when i was tracing my steps.

but let this be a lesson to you guys, go check your spoilers right now and make sure all the bolts are on tight and please dont buy cheap replicas looking for a good deal. just for referrence, the bolts were in my trunk (which means the fiberglass let go) and the spoiler was bought from CTC Motorsports over a year ago.

im not buying another replica part for the rest of my life. can someone please direct me to a real RB5 wing.
joe z 12-12-2001 01:28 AM

you'll probily find it on the back of a honda someday hehee:p
PaulRex 12-12-2001 01:36 AM

Wow the fiberglass broke huh!? - that sux, will you get some kind of refund for that? or is there a warranty?
Hyperdash 12-12-2001 01:57 AM

that totally sucks, imagine if you had the STi carbon fiber wing for the wrx and it flew off....

not to make fun of your situation....but if i was driving around and saw some guy's spoiler fly off id probably laugh...
Andrew 12-12-2001 01:57 AM

id laugh too...i just hope no one was close to being behind me when it flew.
Hyperdash 12-12-2001 02:00 AM

they most likely would have chased you down if you it hit someone
JZ oo7 12-12-2001 02:23 AM

even if it did hit someone, andrew could've gotten away. no one can catch up to his TC RS.

the whole spoiler flew off or just the top section andrew? gee....that sucks

jz
Andrew 12-12-2001 02:24 AM

whole thing. im going syms or rb5 now.
kaibu822 12-12-2001 03:52 AM

are you sure it was not stolen or anything...?
subarumantoo 12-12-2001 08:26 AM

Did the spoiler "rip" itself out? Is there damage to your deck lid? Or did the bolts just come loose? Did you find the bolts in your trunk?

I tend not to read very carefully, either. :)
SubyObsessive 12-12-2001 09:53 AM

so i am guessin u didnt find it? :( that really sucks, but maybe it was a defected one so take that into consideration...

btw, if i saw that i would laugh really hard too
Silver Sube 01 12-12-2001 10:20 AM

Yeah, I'd laugh too if I saw that. But then, I'd wait a few minutes to see if you noticed and then I'd go pick it up and throw it in my trunk. I'd then take it to work and fix it, since fiberglass repair is what I do, repaint it, and I'd be sporting it.
I can just see it now. A Civic Hatchback with a 22B wing on top wanting to race you at a stop light.:D
-=C=- 12-12-2001 10:26 AM

are you sure a honda doesn't have it?

hehe...ms paint rulz....
ImprezedRS 12-12-2001 10:34 AM

Someone stole my sock spoiler off my car right after I bought it and a couple of months ago I swear I saw it on a 90 something thunderbird.
garface 12-12-2001 10:46 AM

Well, ummmm, I'm selling a SYMS "replica" wing. I guess you don't want it because it's a replica. Seems like it's really really strong though. Oh well.
WRXard 12-12-2001 11:10 AM

Wait, a minute. If your bolts were in the trunk. That means that the bolts vibrated out. which means one should tighten the bolts from time to time. Now, if the fiberglass was faulty, then you should have the bolts still attached to the trunk lid and the fiberglass piece with the nut in it should have been sitting on your trunk. It the complete wing is missing that means that there was a loose nut under the lid. To me it seems that the bolts may have came loose. Just need to check the bolts or use lock tight on the bolts.

I'm selling a SYMS replica wing too, brand new, in case you're interested.
Drift Freak 12-12-2001 12:12 PM

I know Mike at SPD tuning has RB5 wings(real C.F.) for like $750.

Andrew 12-12-2001 03:09 PM

guys i went along the road today since its day time and i figured id find SOMETHING....well i did...i didnt want to stop to pick it up becuase of the traffic but i saw it in the center median out of harms way...it was ugly...i think it went from a 4 piece spoiler into a 10 piece :( it was all ripped apart.

the bolts are stuck in my trunk lid as well. it may NOT have been the spoilers fault but MY fault for neglecting to check the bolts every month or so. its near construction so i think i hit a pothole and it lifted a bit and caught wind and just took off.
Dan_E 12-12-2001 03:52 PM

Funny....I thought they were for downforce and wouldn't fly away :D

:( Sorry to hear about it Andrew...I too am a big fan of the RB5 wing...too damn much $$$ though. I guess I'll just keep nagging Randy to sell me his!
Andrew 12-12-2001 05:09 PM

i couldnt get in contact with anyone with an RB5 wing so i said screw it and ordered a genuine SYMS wing, especially since i plan on someday sticking on a SYMS body kit...anyways just make sure your bolts are on tight guys. check them every month.

Question....

How do you steel a spoiler?? Did the person like rip the thing off the car? Or did he manage to pick his way into the trunk and unbolt it? Seems like an awful lot of work for a spoiler thats only worth $250 and would look like **** on any other car.
MagicMT 12-13-2001 12:09 AM

Whoa! How many monthes have you had it? I need to check mine now... I've had my Erebuni v5 replica since Feb with no problems. Roads here are pretty crappy too.

Mike
Andrew 12-13-2001 12:13 AM

iva had mine for a long time. over a year.
jagcars26 12-13-2001 12:29 AM

Andrew 12-13-2001 03:03 AM

no thanks, my syms spoiler is already on its way.
GDB 12-13-2001 09:58 AM

Speaking of replicas, I thought I'd share this story with you:

I had a friend who bought a Supra without the original wing. Sometime down the road, he bought a replica fiberglass wing.

One day he took it down to the race track (NOT drag strip, the REAL THING). After a few laps, he found that the wing was bent inwards (downforce working!).

He too swore not to buy replicas ever again.
hYYpeRX 12-13-2001 03:10 PM

FG spoilers

ussually with most spoilers, they just have the nuts with some barbs fiberglassed right into the wing. So, what could have happened is that when you hit the pothole , it broke free the already weakened nuts from the fiberglass... so, the rest of the wing then was free to go after the nuts broke.

This would then just leave the bolts and the nuts still attached to the trunk... similiar to what it looks like when little punks feel the need to rip your spoiler of your car...

How do those British Touring Cars mount their aluminum wings? I noticed that they are not mounted to the top of the trunk lid... they actually go inside... hmmm... that's an idea.
TampaWRX 12-13-2001 07:35 PM

Reading this thread I feel sorry for Andrew, but I'm amazed that we don't hear more of this. I drive too damn fast to have a wing up in the wind. :D People really steal these things, eh? That is just absurd. Here's hoping that all thieves get stomach cancer. :monkey:
DannyGT 12-13-2001 08:04 PM

It was definitly stolin...Im sorry but they just dont fly off like that, and to tell u the truth, i know a couple of poeple that got there wings completly ripped off there truck...
snipes 12-13-2001 08:08 PM

Sorry to hear that man.....you should have picked it up and duct taped it back togehter =)
rember duct tape solves everything.......

and damn you TampaWRX every time i see a post by you i think your name is TampaxWRX
TampaWRX 12-13-2001 08:40 PM

Well, I didn't name the city or the car. :D Pretend it says "TampaxWRX" and maybe you'll read "TampaWRX". :alien:
MagicMT 12-13-2001 09:10 PM

Maybe it wasn't installed properly.. I checked on mine today and it's on really tightly. I've also hit 118 (and other high speeds) with a ton of wind with no probs.

STi-Nismo Dood 12-18-2001 08:44 PM

I wish they'd lower the price for that rb5 spoiler.... my fiberglass v5/v6 is leaking cracks, and quite worried it will do the same...

750 is outrageous, and it slows my car down.
Splat_One 12-18-2001 09:05 PM

Speaking of v5/6 spoilers on civics theres a red si where I live and he has the VIS spoiler on his car and of course its unpainted and just does belong on the car...
