those of you looking for HID's before they are illegal to buy part 1

M32WRXin3seconds 10-14-2003 04:34 PM

those of you looking for HID's before they are illegal to buy..
Im not a vendor or anything like that, but i did get a set of MCCoullouch 8000K hid's for 350 shipped and insured. the guy had the lights out 3 minutes after the auction ended. and he has tons of them on ebay.
you can get them on his website (with pics of how they look on wrx's) or on ebaymotors.com
this is his website
http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/brightlightz/

and this is his ebay id
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36476&item=2437408630

he had these things shipped out with a tracking number 3 minutes after the auction ended!... bump for a good deal
Mulder 10-14-2003 04:47 PM

It's already illegal to sell them. Vendors who continue to do so are either just depleting their existing stock or choosing to ignore the NHTSA.
Hyper 10-14-2003 05:03 PM

did I miss something last week?
HID are now illegal?
Mulder 10-14-2003 05:08 PM

Technically the aftermarket retrofits always were, as is replacing or changing your OEM headlights in any way. But, the NHTSA ruled that vendors selling HID retrofit kits after August 15 were subject to heavy fines.
Hyper 10-14-2003 05:17 PM

any?
I mean if I get an altima which has an option of HID and go buy them somewhere else, I might have a problem?
Mulder 10-14-2003 05:30 PM

If you buy a car that has OEM HIDs that is fine. If you buy the same car with the standard halogen lights you are not supposed to put HIDs in those lights. Legally this has always been the case but the kits have been readily available. Now, the govt. has cracked down on the sales of said kits.
M32WRXin3seconds 10-14-2003 05:50 PM

hopefully
HID's will never die. halogens...they are the Suck
02R6 10-14-2003 10:50 PM

M32WRX...,

Have you installed these yet? I would like to see where you mounted the ballasts and ignitors, if you have pictures that is.

Thanks a lot.
M32WRXin3seconds 10-15-2003 11:13 AM

How did you mount the ballasts and ingnitors then? Velcro, tie wraps?

I haven't received a tracking number and the auction ended at 7pm last night.

Louie 10-16-2003 08:32 PM

So if you retrofit them, its illegal, but if you buy a new headlight housing, its not? Can you link us to some more info on the subject?
02R6 10-20-2003 11:02 PM

I just installed the 8000k kit and they are great. The install was really simple and there was no wiring involved. The light output is amazing, and they look great. I highly recommend the kit to anybody considering it.

I think the law down in the states pretty much prohibits you from modifying your headlights in any way - but it's up to the law enforcement to write you up or not.
Louie 10-21-2003 07:05 AM

I've asked an Atty here in maryland that does a lot of driving law cases, he said that its not a law. The only law in Md that covers this is one that states that the light ommited from the front of a automobile can only be yellow or white. No more than 6 lights can be lit from the front of the car at anytime. No more than 2 lights can strobe/flash unless if its for EMS/Police, purple can be used for funeral processions.

I've also asked a Balt County cop about this, she said that they pull people over because of the blue hues, but you can tell the differences between HID and fakes. At night its very difficult to tell the differences of cars that have them and not.

Anyhow, I'm going to try and find an actual driving code that covers this so it can be posted from an official source.

It's a NHTSA rule, not a local law. It applies to those selling HIDs, not consumers, which was said in other posts in this thread... It's illegal for you to drive around with non-DOT approved headlights.
mbeach 10-21-2003 10:11 AM

We put in a set of these last night while painting headlights.

They took exactly 6 minutes to hook up. They are true plug-n-play units, with very nice output. Not too blue.

The ballasts and associated wiring mount right behind and under the rear of the headlights. If you have your lights out (6 bolts) it'll be easer to do.

We were going to screw them in (still might), but the double-sided tape is strong enough to hold the components.

The only tool you will need is a test light (to determine ground/hot wire on the OEM side of the headlight plug).
mista618 10-21-2003 11:48 AM

hey does anybody know how hard these will be for me to install? i've got edm headlights with a jim hoyd wiring harness. will i have to throw out the harness and use another? just wanted to know first before i purchased them. thanks
02R6 10-21-2003 12:01 PM

Here's some shots of the kit that mbeach and I installed, not the greatest (pictures), but you get the idea:

02R6, did you have to reaim your lights? I just got an HID kit for my stock lights and haven't reaimed them yet. I drove around a lot at night and have yet to be flashed by incoming traffic. I think I might lower the lights a little though.

I haven't re-aimed mine yet either. Haven't been flashed either. That's funny that you were thinking about lowering yours, because I was thinking about raising mine.

Let me know what you end up doing.
Turbo4Life 10-21-2003 12:49 PM

I just wanted to lower my lights because since HID lights are so much brighter I don't want to take any chances of blinding people. That includes being behind somebody at night and coming towards me. I'll let you know what I end up doing.
plunk10 10-21-2003 01:52 PM

Do you lose your highbeams with this kit?
Turbo4Life 10-21-2003 02:02 PM

Yes, I lost my highbeams with my Brightstar HID Kit. But, the HID lights are so bright you don't really need your highbeams. Here's a link on where I got my kit from:

http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=429957
02R6 10-21-2003 02:31 PM

I lost my brights with the McCulloch kit as well. Like Turbo said, though, the "lows" more than make up for it.
