tinting... what'd look best?
I'm planning on getting my windows tinted in the next week or so but I'm debating what I should do...
JDM style - dark back 3 windows only (10-15%)
Regular - 35% all around
Combo - 35% up front - 10-15% on the back 3.
Also.. anyone here suggest a metallic tint? I was kind of thinking of doing something w/ a bronze-ish metallic tint to it. (Plan on getting bronze wheels in the future). Dunno if that might make it look a little trashy though.

I went with 20% rear, 35% front. It's pretty smooth looking. I would have rather done 20% all the way around, but it's just too dark in front (with the law and such). This is on a black car, though. Dark tint looks better on black IMO. But just get what you like best - if you get something and don't like it it will probably be a PITA to get it removed/replaced.

I think bronze might acutally "go" with a red car, even more so if you have bronze wheels.
The only thing I'm concerned about is Mike Valentine (of V1 fame) has said that metallic tint can seriously reduce the range of radar detectors.

Personally, I like a more uniform look for tint but think that 35% is too dark. I think I might go with like 40% all around or 40% on the rear 3 and 45% on the front two so the cops don't have a stupid reason to stop me.

yeah I was thinking bronze would be pretty sweet looking, but I didn't want it to end up looking like gold bling bling. I don't have a radar detector so I guess that wouldn't matter too much. 35% doesn't look dark to me at all...
AttaQ - you have any pics? I want to see how noticeable the difference is between the two shades. I'm kinda on the edge on whether it'd look stupid for it not to be uniform.

The combo was my idea for Rebellion....... I have never seen a combo car before BUT i was wondering if it could be done.... Being his wife I know I'm not the only woman in his life (the firey redhead in our garage) sooo I told him that as his woman you shouldn't let the men see her goods from the outside.... they need to respect and sweet talk her first!! Plus he has some cool stuff in his car that if you didn't have tint anyone and their mother could see it!! Respect the lady

I haven't researched this yet myself but was thinking that getting the tint rules for all 50 states and going with the lowest common denominator would make you grief-proof anywhere in the US. This thinking stems from the warning my wife got in her Eclipse from Kentucky...75% fore & 50% aft minimum light penetration here in Ohio. No need to wave additional flags in front of a bull!

35% is the darkest u can get in NC... I don't go out of state much and the places I do go have the same tint laws... so I'm not worried about that.
75%? good grief... that's like absolutely no tint whatsoever.

IWFA for window tint laws, pick your view preference...

I went with 20% plain black sides and back, 43% windshield (kind of a charcoal, barely noticeable). I in no way feel that this is too dark. If anything else, I would feel comfortable with taking the windshield a notch darker. This is on a blue wrx and I think the black looks pretty nice.

Chris02WRX - thanks. that's pretty similar to mine only mine is a black car. Plus, he has a more reflective tint than mine, lightening up the look a bit. I like mine on my car, but if I had silver that is totally badazz.
Revision - if you are paranoid about the cops, honestly, getting dark tint will make you more paranoid. In Chicago, plenty of people have illegal tint and you don't NORMALLY get hassled about it unless you are doing something else illegal or you just happen to get stopped by a cop who is in the mood to be an a**hole. However, IMO if you are going to tint, anything less than 35% is a waste of your time and money. 35% is the least you can get and really have many of the protective properties OBnoxiouS was talking about. I like that not everyone can see all of my interior all the time, that is a big reason I like tint.

Agreed...it's gotta be dark enough to do the job.
As a side note, instead of adding tinting to glass, anyone ever heard of actual tinted glass as a replacement to the original? Although the cost would probably nix the concept, the quality and longevity of the product could/would be outstanding.

My friend and I went 30% for all windows and 15% for the rear windshield. 30% is not too dark at all actually
The attached photo is a bit small but does give you an idea of the ~35% windows and 15% rear combo :)

hmm 15% in the back looks a little too much.. I'd like to be able to see out of my rear windshield at night.

Try 15% all around, Looks great, and not to dark. Oh and cops have to have a light meter on them to give you a ticket for that and here in CO 15% does't get them pissy.
| aod | 08-02-2002 04:20 PM |
I did 7% in the rear and 22% in the front. It looks really nice, and noone can see in the car except through the windshield. Of course, out here in hell - I mean Phoenix, dark window tint is actually functional.

I have the wagon (duh..) and got 20% (35% is legal in WA) on the front sides, 5% on the rear sides, back sides, & rear window.
5% or limo tint is legal in WA on the rear windows and cargo area of SUVs, Vans, wagons.
I thought it would be too dark at night or in our sometimes (says w/tongue firmly planted in cheek) cloudy Seattle weather, but it's not too bad.

I did 15% all the way around. Nothing on windshield because we replace them alot out here in Colorado because of rocks used on the road in winter to melt the snow. Looks great. I get alot of complements. Its illegal, but there are always places willing to do it. Paid $189 for it. Not to dark at night to see out of.

I have 50% on the front and 35% on the rear. My rex is black, and I'm more than happy with my tint. Any darker, I think would be too dark for me to see at night.

Don't mean to side track the subject but:
What effect does window tinting have on Subaru cars with the Auto-Dimming Mirror/Compass option?
I'm all for tinting. I've seen tint with the mirror-like band on the top. Now thats is a total cop magnet.

as far as the bronze tinting goes... i'm going to need to see it in person first.. I'm afraid it might look to "taco" or "ghetto" (like rice cept different ethnicities)

I have the auto-dimming mirror and the tint (5% in the rear window or limo tint in my case) doesn't seem to affect its performance. It does, however, take a bit of getting used to when you look in the rear view mirror at night. I'm used to it now. I much prefer the extra security the tint offers in my cargo area even w/the cargo cover (sometimes I need to carry more than the cover can handle).

titanium or metallic tint is the best looking tint in my opinion. i had it on a previous blue car and i will have it on this one too. it is very subtle at 35%, some people can't tell it's even tinted, and the metallic color (shall we say) is subtle too, not close to trashy.
i have seen mirror tint and i'm not into that. smoke tint always looks classic and good, sometimes it's better to go with what works.

I've seen a silver WRX with a metallic tint, looks nice but depends on the color. I asked the guy where he got it. He told me that it was used for office windows. His windows looked like mirrors!!

Here's mine:
35% on the sides
18% on the back
50% on the front
Llumar brand "Platinum Plus"metallic tint. (even though you can't tell from the passenger side)
It looks much better on cloudy days.
I like it though, not too dark, but still gives the privacy for man's best friend.... road head!!
