Tire Shine - What do dealers use? part 1

Tire Shine - What do dealers use?

I've read on here that many use the Meguiars Endurance stuff, but it seems that everytime I see cars displayed at Dealers, the stuff that they use to shine tires are just glossier/shinier than what I've used. Anyone know what kind of stuff they use? I've heard people say that they use Brake Fluid. Weird and hard to believe though.
silvercharged 09-08-2002 02:07 PM

Hank,

Brake fluid is a real 'old' trick from back in the 50's and I wouldn't recommend it...Most dealers use 'fleet' products that are only good to help make an impression on the lot..

The best stuff I've ever used is "Looks wet, no Mess" from Super Shine Detail Products. Sprays on with a very accurate , fine spray nozzle, dries in about 30 seconds, and lasts for at least 3 weeks. It looks so wet, that at their displays, they invite you to touch the tires, and when you do, they're dry!

silvercharged - that stuff loooks great. I want to try some for sure, but I just don't know if I want to shell out almost $30 for four cans when I've never used it before. Too bad they don't sell one can at a time. Do they sell these at automotive stores?
silvercharged 09-08-2002 02:23 PM

Hank -
Not available in any stores I know of, I came across it at one of the many car shows I try to get to each year... If it's any encouragement, I buy this stuff by the case, it's that good...

I also use it on the stock black side skirts on my WRX...Spray it on, wait a few minutes, and buff off the excess, the skirts look great for weeks!

Hank3 09-08-2002 02:48 PM

You willing to sell me a can? Please...:)
Ikonosin 09-08-2002 04:37 PM

Hank, you do not want the stuff dealerships use. I work at a dealership, and the stuff we have fades away really quick (week or two at max). It really is just to make the car lok good when the customer shows up. We buy our stuff from a local detail supply company and I believe its simply called "tire shine" or something....it is a neat color of blue though:D

Scott:)
WRX_02_227 09-08-2002 05:32 PM

I dont know about you guys but the dealer stuff doesnt seem to spin off as easily as the Meguires stuff.....I put the Meguries stuff on and wipe it off and it still flys all over the side of my car (aspen white) and looks like hell. And, since it was wiped off its not shiny but just black. The dealer stuff seems to be shiny when dry.

That's the good thing about "Looks Wet, No Mess", dries within a minute, and doesn't fly off on to the body. I've used everything on my tires, and I didn't believe how good this stuff was either, until I tried it.....Works really well on black textured plastic, too.

Hank, I've got an extra can, if you really want one.....
Barry 09-08-2002 07:17 PM

Hank- Try Stoner's More Shine, Less Time. 1 coat leaves tires deep black ( I prefer),second coat will add shine to tires. Will not fly on body. I also use it on all my black trim. Their glass cleaner-Invisible Glass- is also great. Pep Boys and sores of that like will carry Stoners.

Need more Bling-Bling Hank?
djerickd 09-08-2002 07:55 PM

Hey silvercharged you got a can for me? LOL!

Hey Hank if you want to order some cans I'll go in on it with you.

That is good stuff, and I swear by Invisible Glass, but if your tires have less than about 6,000 miles on them, More Shine, Less Time will fling off, at least in my experience...

Yeah, super shiny IS bling, but YOU control how glossy you want your tires to be, and dirty tires are worse than bling bling anytime...
gtguy 09-08-2002 09:12 PM

I like Griot's Garage Vinyl and Rubber dressing. It doesn't give that "wet look" shine, which I personally don't like. It's more of a subtle satin finish. Nice stuff, and seems to last and last.

I would imagine that dealers use whatever they can get away with spending the least on. It only has to look good until you sign the papers!

I work at a detail shop and we use Stoner products. I feel that the more shine less time tires does go up on the body of the car when cars pull away...but thats my experience....im actually going to recommend "Looks wet, no Mess" from Super Shine Detail Products to my boss and see what he says...
TonyWRX 09-08-2002 09:15 PM

however Invisible Glass and other stoner products are great....invisible glass kicks a$$!
Skyline 09-08-2002 09:22 PM

I use Zaino's Z-16 "Perfect Tire Gloss" and it works great. It does not sling, it does not deteriorate the rubber, and it protects against UV. One application makes the tire look blacker and have a satin gloss. Additional applications increase the wetness. Good stuff!
Martin Ritchie 09-08-2002 09:54 PM

I use Turtle Wax tire wax instead of the spray stuff. Comes with applicator sponge. Keeps the tires shiny for weeks and does not fly off. And it smells like my old girlfriend.
TonyWRX 09-08-2002 09:59 PM

HAHAHAHA does your old girlfriend smell good or bad????? ;)
Hank3 09-09-2002 12:19 AM

First off - LOL!!! I'm glad I started this thread. I've been gone for a few hours and look how many posts

Silvercharged - let me know what you want for one can. I'll send you the money.

djerickd - I'll let you try it out when silvercharged hooks me up. If we like it, we'll go in and buy some together. Bling Bling isn't Bling Bling unless you share the Bling some with your friends

Lots of great suggestions here. Thanks y'all. Keep the Bling alive!!!
Skyline 09-09-2002 01:19 AM

LWNM seems interesting

Could someone who has some LWNM post the ingredients? I wonder if it contains any silicone. Wondering if it's "good for the rubber". If it's safe, sounds like a good product to try out. :D
WRX4FUN 09-09-2002 01:24 AM

Try This

I use Eagle One Wet. It has a high gloss shine and as long as you spray it on then spray a rag and wipe over the spay to get it even then wait about 20 minutes before you drive it. It will look great for days. The reason you just don't want to spray it and let it run is because once the tire gets hot it will be all over the side of your car.

:)

I should add that I do not spray directly on tire -I spray on sponge and wipe it on. Perhaps that's why I get no body fling.....:D

Cool, I'll try it out when I get my 20" Chrome Dubs on there!
j/k
Hank3 09-09-2002 11:50 AM

Makes sure your chrome rims look nasty too. No spoke design except a "wavy" kind of design that I've seen some vehicles in town have - mostly them stank SUV's
djerickd 09-09-2002 12:01 PM

Aww yeah!

these should slow me down a bit
Hank3 09-09-2002 12:13 PM

Not ugly enough, but I'm sure it's heavy enough. The design I'm talking about kind of looks like the rims on the new Infinit QX4's, but they kind of only got two spokes, but they're kind of wavy. Kind of like this little doo hicky here ---> ~

Awww YEEEEEAAAAAAA...

PM'd ya

I use Vinylex on my dashboard...great stuff; when I really read the back, it said it was good for rubber also, so I tried it on my tires...one coat gives you a low-gloss shine that lasts for approx 2 weeks; two coats gives it a deeper and higher gloss shine, no so bling, but really nice...I did it 3 weeks ago, and in the South Florida rain, the tires are still shiny.

It does contain silicone, but in a different form not used by other manufacturers (trade secret) It's this form (in conjunction with some other ingredients) that makes it dry instantly, yet still look wet....
They of course, wouldn't tell me exactly what's in it, but they did say it has something in it to prevent rubber oxidation. So it does preserve as well as look good....
silvercharged 09-09-2002 01:56 PM

Looks Wet, No Mess..

From the back of the can......

"Fine aerosol mist application sprays on absolutely perfectly with no runs or drips and sets up nearly dry to the touch in about one minute. Looks Wet, No Mess creates virtually no overspray even when used in windy conditions. It is 100% safe for all wheel finishes including painted, polished or chromed rims and any overspray simply wipes off with a towel. It is not a clear coat paint, so it won't harden, crack, peel or yellow. Prevents tires from browning, fading and cracking. We guarantee your satisfaction."

Really good stuff....

Hmmmm... if it does contain silicone, then I'm afraid I'll have to pass on it. :(

Thanks for posting this information though! It's appreciated.
TonyWRX 09-09-2002 02:56 PM

can someone tell me what's wrong with it containing silicone?? Is that bad for the rubber or something? I thought most of these tire shine products contained silicone?
Opazone 09-09-2002 03:37 PM

I just bought and used a product called Forever Black tire gel from AutoSport. It's a dye for your tires that won't wash off or fade for months. It's oil and silicone free, and it's $9.95 a bottle. I did my WRX wagon, my girlfriend's car, and her son's truck, and still have lots left. It's only been about 2 weeks, but still looks good. You can order at www.autosportcatalog.com.

The best thing that I bought was Forever Black bumber and trim reconditioner. I mistakenly had my son help wax the car, and he waxed the side skirts. So I had gray streaky side skirts, and the other products I used from the auto parts store only lasted a wash or rain. This dyes the side skirt, and it still looks great after 3 weeks, with at least 7 washings and 2 rainstorms. It's $14.95 at AutoSport.
BlkRexWagon 09-09-2002 04:25 PM

I used to detail cars at a dealer and everybody here is right... don't bother with any of the dealer junk. I tried the Endurance stuff for a few weeks and hated it. Despite what it says it will start to leave a build-up on the tire unless you scrub your tires every wash. I've been very happy with the Eagle-1 Wet stuff. The Stoner products are very good as well.
WRX Jim 09-10-2002 12:00 AM

I work at a dealership.
We used proffesional series Meguirs products.

For tire shine we use S-Dressing. Its tire shine. Its purple. I put it on my car ... I let it sit then rub it in and rub off the excess .Unless it rains alot or i drive through alot of mud it lasts for a week or two. AND it doesnt brown up your tires.

I can buy this stuff for about 190 dollar a gallon.
CBoldman 09-10-2002 12:54 AM

I work at a dealership also. We use less time more shine or whatever stuff.
blukestrel 09-10-2002 10:32 AM

I used to use Armor All, then a mailman got, well, postal, when he saw me using it- said the stuff is terrible for your car. Is that the general consensus these days, or are people just going for the cutting edge bling? I use nothing but soap and water these days, but I've got a bottle and a half of Armor All still, since a mailman's opinion is only worth, maybe, $0.37.
djerickd 09-10-2002 10:42 AM

Armor All IS terrible!!!!

It contains animal fats which in time biodegrade  which doing that its breaking up your interior! Throw that stuff away and get you some 303 Protectant!

Silicone can cause damage to rubber and vinyl over time. Many tire shine products do contain silicone, and those that do are bad. The original Armor All contains silicone and that's why it's bad. The modern PDMS based products like 303 Protectant and Zaino Perfect Tire Gloss are safe.
