I don't know why people would say it couldn't be done in 45 minutes but more so I don't see how these pictures prove it was?
| mrbodega15 | 01-31-2006 10:28 PM |
It proves its not a photshop job you gotta take my word on the 45minutes part

What else do you want from me a picture of my lid open? You still wouldnt be able to see the welds from that angle.

No but I tanged, ruffed up, primer, and blocked it out. Lunch was over by then so we painted it a few days later.

You shaved the keyhole? Or the spoiler holes? I'm a little lost..
| natoli4 | 01-31-2006 11:50 PM |
it can be done...I worked in a body shop for a summer and it's possible.

Well given that he still has a spoiler, and the location of the weld, I'm guessing it was the keyhole.

If you painted the trunk with OEM subaru paint, a 2 stage Base Clear, you could not have been totally done within 45 mins. the clear coat takes about 1-3 hours to dry in an accelerated UV dryer..

Well I am sorry I doubted you at first because I knew that the welding AND paint couldn't be done in 45 minutes. Shaving it can, obviously... as you have proven and as most body shops could do... but shaved and painted is different. Looks good from the outside. Do you have a popper for it or you just pop it from next to the drivers seat?
| bhhamblin | 02-01-2006 12:27 AM |
shave+paint= NOT POSSIBLE IN 45 MINUTES

I just pop it from the inside right next to the drivers seat. I would have been skiptical as well if someone told me they did all that in 45 minutes along with painting and clearing

Since someone decided to Key my trunk i might look into shaving the keyhole also.
Looks good :)
And i dont doubt you shaved it in 45 minutes.Pretty easy to do as its such a small piece to weld in and smooth out.

Question about the trunk.
Can you use the lock on the trunk to lock it so that you cant even use the popper from inside. My gf's carolla does that, pretty nice feature.

Yea you can.
Ha what would be really funny if you accidentally switched on the trunk lock from the inside the trunk that disables the trunk popper in your car. And since you have no keyhole i wonder how your gonna open it...

Thanks man i love the look as well but, i going to tweak it a little bit. To get the job done with paint and all labor your looking at around 450. you figure 350 to paint any panel and the labor for cleaning the emblems and shaving the lock. I got it painted for a 6 pack of Fat Tire. ;)

Fold down a seat and pop it from the inside then make sure the locking mech isnt switched on anymore before you close it

those are ****ty welds not to mention the 2" piece of fill rod stuck to it. also i dont care how perfectly you cut the sheet metal to fill that hole; to make it look perfect you would still need to use some sort of fill material to blend it smooth with the rest of the trunk. im sorry but i take pride in my welding skills. i welded better than that in HS.

yeah you try welding on thin sheet metal. You heat it up, you warp it. so yeah im going to be a little more carefull and maybe make not as clean welds because i cant heat it up all the way. The filler rod was my fault becuase lunch ended and we had to stop so i forgot about it. But no worries its not on there no.

Eh... so now you can't open your trunk without going all the way up to the drivers footwell?
Is it i just me or does this not seem like a good idea?

i dont know the thickness of these trunks, but i can make a continuous tig bead on 20g with out warpage; which is probably pretty damn close to the same thickness. next time you attempt to weld such thin material try using .095 mig wire. it melts quickly and you end up with very small beads. which results in even less material when you metal finish it. if you had spent the time to make a near perfect fitting circular piece, you could have fusion welded that with your tig torch.
