Hey guys, thanks for the comments! :D
Honestly, it wasn't really that hard to do. It was a bit time consuming, due mostly to my inexperience (and those damn plastic screw-rivets!! )
Took about 3hrs to do, but that included putting back on a side skirt.
Notable difficulties:
1. Plastic screws - they suck, but eventually come out if you take your time. DON'T PRY if they are hooked into something metal! (You'll bend it).
2. Ver.4 blinkers use different adapters than the CDN blinkers. Little bit of "cut & paste" solved that problem. (Handy to have a soldering gun, clippers, and some electrical tape.)
3. Don't forget about the two bolts on the BOTTOM of the bumper. (BTW, the two bolts on the bottom and the four bolts on top are all 17mm)
4. Have someone else handy just to help you take off the bumper and put the new one on. Never hurts to have an extra pair of hands. ;)
I had a blast though! Definatley worth it. :D

So what was your total cost for the swap?
| Skeandhu | 03-10-2002 07:01 AM |
Total cost was ~$1000 CDN
I bought the OEM fogs used, and I have the JDM rebar (which was about the 3rd of the cost of a US rebar). Also, I did the install myself, which maybe saved about an hour of labour (since they know what they're doing ;))

i dont wanna rain on your parrade, but i dont like.
the sides of the bumer look really good, but the middle just does not look right, ....looks like a washer board or something... but hey, if you like it, then it's all good, cause your oppinion is all that matters :alien:

RotarFreak - I found that having the center grill painted looked better than cutting it out or leaving it black... I thought it looked a bit more aggressive this way. Otherwise it kinda looked like a big gaping fish mouth!
I know some people have installed it without the grill painted or with the grill cut, but like you said - to each their own. :D

i thought about it a lil more
you know what would make it look better?

22B vents?
Not a bad idea... I'm thinking about a V.5 grill as well. :)
Unfortunately I'm tapped out after this install, so it may be a while unless someone is feeling generous for my birthday. ;)

wow that looks really good man.
| Pikeadon | 03-10-2002 11:30 AM |
it only cost you ~1000 CDN how much of the price was getting it painted. Seemes like that would have been like $400 alone
| Pikeadon | 03-10-2002 11:31 AM |
forgot to put that i think it looks good, I hope to do the Version 4 or 5 bumper swap someday.

Real nice!
I too have done a Ver.5/6 bumper on my ex-OBS and doing the swap goes a long way to making the car look a whole lot better. Way better than just making you car look like every other RS out there with a Ver.5/6 bumper!!! Looks like a J-Spec Ver.4. I have a few quick questions for you.
-Where did you get the orange bumper signals?
-Where did you get the J-Spec. bumper beam?
-Did the US-spec foglights, and brackets just bolt right up?
I am asking this for a buddy of mine who is trying to make his car a J-spec. Ver.2 look alike. You know, the one with to old style hood/grill/headlights.:)
Later,
Seth E.

Hey guys!
Thanks for the great comments!!
Here's answers to some of your questions:
1) Cost of paint was $230 CDN (incl tax). This also included getting one of my side-skirts repainted (I had a boo-boo ;))
2) All parts came from my local Subaru dealership with the exception of OEM fogs which I bought from a friend. Part #s as follows:
Bumper skin: 57720FA071
Bumper beam: 57760FA400
Blinkers: 84441FA040 and 84441FA050 (one is the right side and one is the left side, don't recall which is which. :))
3) The fogs I bought were off of a V.5 bumper, so yes the brackets and the fogs from a US bumper will fit without a problem.
Seth - V.2 conversion sounds cool... make sure he posts pics!
Mike - I'm looking at getting the lip eventually, but I think the rear spats and possibly a different spoiler will come first. :D (Pocketbook able, of course)
Cheers!
-Kevin

Looks really nice and unique. Nice job there.
I'm a big fan of wagons. Eventually I want to get an older AWD wagon and convert it to late model specs and looks.
Hopefully by that time we will have a decent Supercharger kit for the engine.
I know I saw a picture of a red wagon with a ver4 bumper a while back.
Ru fan : do you have any pics of your OBS after the conversion?

Looks bitchin, dude!!!
But yeah, it needs a V5 grille! Contact cardin555, he can hook you up with a REAL V5 peice for around $200 painted and everything.
Can you get the foglight covers for that bumper anywhere? I dunno, I like it when the fogs are covered for some reason...but your car looks KIKCASS either way! NICE! I'm jealous!!
But, if I ditch my Canadian bumper, i'm going with an STi 22b replica (looks like the 22b one, only it fits our "narrow body" cars...but still made of urethane! :D )

Man I need a version 4 bumper...
Skeandhu - the number you provided for the bumper beam is for the Japanese one which costs less than the US one? The guy in the Subaru parts department told me to get all the numbers and give him a call back for prices.

Heya GooseMan!
It might be a while before I can afford to spend for more items on my car... but when it's time, I'll maybe contact cardin for the grill :)
I've found a couple of places online where I can get the fog covers (MRT and another place whose name escapes me just now). I know it looks great with the fog covers, but again, extra expense :( Still debating too; I DO really like it with the fogs!! ;)
22B-style bumper will look nice if you decide to get it! A few guys in the Toronto Club have done it (fiberglass or urethane?) and it loos fantastic! If you need any tips on swapping your bumper, let me know. :D
DoinkMobb - Yes, the number I provided is for the JDM rebar which was ~$130 CDN; I think the US rebar was ~$325 CDN and I'm not sure if it will even fit under a V.4 bumper. Which other part numbers do you need?

I just did some looking around and found references to that one, as well as a very similar product known as the Holzer front lip". I also found links to the V4 front lip.
Anyone know if the V4 front lip fits on the MY98 RS bumper?
Out of the three, I think I like the look of the Holzer the best...

Those are probably the only numbers I need. Depending on the price, I think I'd rather have the clear turn signals, but y'know whatever is cheaper. I bet a v4 will make a night and day difference on my car...
