Want to get your kids into karting?......

(taken from local forum)
Well my son has been in and around karts for 3 years now. He has been in the car around the track and races anything you give him. So it was time for him to get some formal instruction and schooling from someon other than me. While I might be an instructor, I think it takes a special approach with kids, so I looked into schools last summer and found many in Socal. So with plane tickets, rental car and hotel and the school it was adding up to a nice trip to Lemans !! And with Monrovia Raceway being sold there is no more go kart racing up there this year so that leaves an outdoor track 1 hr 'AFTER you cross the bay bridge. Finally a buddy told me that ALLSPORTS had a kid's school and league racing !! I was more excited than he was.
The school is a 2 day school and cost 300.00 total. ALLSPORTS provides the suits, helmets, gloves, and the karts. They pair your son or daughter with their own instructor and they get ALOT of one on one instruction.
Day 1.
The day started with a short classroom session.

Chief instuction is from the owner, Francois Duret, ex eighties LeMans 24hr regular. He understand the track better than anyone and has a way with kids that can calm the most competitve "soccer dads".
After the class room session, the kids are taught how to put on their safety gear and the importance of each.

Then its off to the karts for a lead-follow session where surprisingly, they get about 25 minutes in the kart with their instructor in front.

To my surprise this doesnt wear the kids out,not at all. I think with the build up of excitement, they NEED to get out there and get some fo it out of their system.
The remaining staff of instructors range from primarily current 125 sprint kart racers, some direct drive racers and 125 shifter kart racers. ALL early to mid twenties and trained how to communicate with kids. Francois spends time overseeing the event and some time on the track with the kids. I always felt very comfortable with my son out there, and I am the overly protective type too.
After the intial session, they set up cones and a slalom format. One of the instructors demonstrates ( very well I might add as this guy drifts his kart in one seemless weave thru 15 cones) how to go thru the cones and not touch any cones. This gives way to a threshold braking course with a braking zone and then a braking zone in the middle of the fastest corner. They teach the kids HOW to spin and how to correct. As a father, this was amazing to watch. If you are a racer when your son or daughter is born, alot of us secretly hope they get into racing, yet you dont know if they will..."take to it". Well when you see your son or daughter in a kart making corrections around a corner in a kart, you cant help from jump up in the air..... LOL.
By mid morning your child has had about 1 hour of seat time in a 4 hp go kart. For some of us, they are faster than YOU by now.
To keep it interesting, they take a "cookie snack" break and the kids can relax and eat come cookies and talk amongst other kids. There is normally about 6 kids in a class.
Next the kids are taken out and allowed to pass the instructors, and do role play and mock racing. This is interesting as you get to see your son or daughter pass on the inside or the occasional bump pass. The instructors are very good with getting across to the kids about not bumping and being responsible. None of the kids were out of line or acted out. Parents were there and allowed to be there up close and play some role. I might add that the instructors were kool about me putting my .02 cents worth in about my son and small things I see him doing. My sone likes to slide. And when he started he would slide thru each corner and kill his exit speed. By the end of the program he tracks out and is getting the power down. ;)
Lunch time your child is fed Pizza provided by ALLSPORTS.
After lunch the instructors explain a exercise to the kids and the kids have to ride side by side all the way around the track and stay perfectly next to the instructors. This is by far the hardest thing yet. Most are not getting it at first, and make mistakes, but after 15minutes, they are starting to get it and then by the end of the session, they are all in sync and look like my SCCA race school class !!
By the end of the day they are allowed to do a 5 lap race starting from a grid formation. My son being the smallest, they started him in last place. He got a good start and jumped up to 4th place . However with the sliding, he fell back to 5th place. Kids naturally want to win, and I Was surprised he wasnt upset. HE just had a great time and thats all you can really ask for, as they are learning a craft thats better than playing video games or hanging out with the wrong crowd.
The day was over at 1 pm. school started at 0900 am.
As I drove away I started telling my son how well he did and how proud I was only not to get a response from the back seat. He was already asleep holding his helmet. :)
Day 2.
They go over the same basics as you learned in day 1. Figuring that half that info was forgotten. Once you see the kids go out in the AM of day 2 you know why!! After 10 minutes they are back to where they left off.

Day 2 proves to be the true test for some of the kids as they get more track time and now they get to practice grid starts.
Finally they do a qualifying session and then the school kids are mixed in with the league kids and they do 2 15 minutes races.

After the races each kid from the school as given a trophy, racing certificate with their name on it, and a ALLSPORTS JR racing license. This type of detail goes over very well with the kids and the parents.

So all in all your child gets about 4 hours of seat time in 2 days, freel meals, 2 classroom sessions, exposure to actual racing, learn how to interact with grown ups and other kid racers and have fun!! All this in a controlled environment, plenty of adult supervision, with safety minded fun and learning.
You cant help but think, "why didnt they have this when I was young?.." :)
So now, I can go karting and myu son can go with me and run with the JR kids. For the parents who kinda' wanted to get into karting this would be the perfect opportunity !!
ALLSPORTS is open year round and can accomodate anything from arrive and drive to full corporate catered events. I have been going there since they opened in 1999. I raced in their league in 2000 and have since attended 2 karting schools around the country. Needless to say this helps keep my mind ( and body  ) in shape for auto racing.

Very cool write up.
I wish there was something like that around me. Hmmm....sounds like a business opportunity. I wonder how much it would cost to get a track like that setup.

Find a kiddie kart place and milk kit for what its worth. They get used to the engine sound and other kids an deven though they only go 5mph, they can learn the line and basic motor skills. My son had one of those 7mph PRatt and Miller Vettes, and could slide it around and drive thru cones. So there is alot you can do at 3 to get them going. Main thing is with PS2 and other influences, if they dont already have this under their belt, they may not want to do karting. Plus they have to be semi-serious and listen to people, something most 3 yr olds dont like to do.
Byt find a local place and make it happen. Take some neighborhood kids also, cant hurt for him to have his friends there.

Hey Myles! VERY cool writeup! This is one of those things that your son will be telling his friends about for the rest of his life. Definate +1 for great dad points. On top of that he is learning how to drive properly, and the overall importance of safety in a driving situation. That gets another +1 in great dad points!

Dude, you will have a BLAST at JIM HALL. LA is about 45 minutes down the road. Worth the drive too! Jim Hall uses those 100cc EMMICK karts and they use about a 9k clutch and do about 80 down the straight of the old track( summer 2004).
Good times !!

I look forward to see "Little Senna" in the F1 headlines in 10 years.
My son is 3 yrs and loves buzzing around in his battery powered Vette (5mph).
I was hoping that there was something in Ohio I could take him to when the time is right.
Perhaps building a cneter would be an answer?
Nevertheless, Dulles isn't that far of a drive and would be a wonderful experience for both of us.

Might start a "race fund" along side college fund for later on, so he is self sponsored, since Ron Dennis doesnt live in our neighborhood !! ( thats what happened to Lewis Hamilton ).
