What brand & grade of engine oil should I use? part 1

Hojai 06-26-2002 07:25 PM

what brand & grade of engine oil should i use?

i have a impreza w/ turbo kit, don't know if this makes a difference from NA car. Also, i do ocasional road racing, so what brand and grade of engine oil would you guys recommend to me to use in summer and winter time?
Penphoe 06-26-2002 07:36 PM

Use Mobil1 and get it from Walmart out in Lougheed Mall. Around $26 bucks for 4L, and if you can get the 5L jug, it's even a better deal.

LaterZ!

I second that...

Mobil1. 10W30 in the summer & 5 or 0W30 in winter (depending on where you live in Canada). If it is freakin' cold where you are in the winter go for the 0W30.
Jon Bogert 06-26-2002 07:54 PM

I use
Summer: Motul 5W40 300V
Winter: Motul (not 300V) or Mobil1 0W40

Road Racing? 15W50 or 20W60 seems to be the choice for hardcore Subaru drivers in Europe where they're driving at sustained high RPMs. If you're just talking about an occasional track day, I'd guess you won't need any more protection than the 5W40.
BIGSKYWRX 06-27-2002 12:01 AM

Jon,

I'm curious about the Motul 300V motor oil (I use their brake fluid), does it come in just 5W40? Anywhere to read up on it?

I'm currently running Mobil1 10W30 summer, 5W30 winter and am satisfied w/ it, but always looking to see if there is better.

Thanks

You have to outweigh the positives and negatives. I have never heard of any negatives using Mobil 1. As far as the positives, you can get Mobil 1 anywhere, where can you get Motul? Certainly not at Pep-Boys! What are the advantages of Motul oil? Mobil 1 has a pretty good track record. I have heard nothing of Motul engine oil. I hear they make the best brake fluid, but engine oil? I guess if you can justify the cost of the Motul (I'm sure it's not cheap) as far as it's advantages over Mobil 1 (are there any?) Than go for it. But I think you will find Mobil 1 is the best synthetic for your money.

Just my $.02

I use mobil 1 myself.
I used Castrol GTX until 10K and now have started using Mobil 1. I dunno why, but I've heard to use dino oil until 10K. Dunno if its true, but I went ahead and did that, but changed it every 2K or so. Now I am buying Mobil 1 in the 5 quart jugs that the Super Walmarts sell for $17 as well as a Pure One Purolator filter and change every 3K or 2 months, whichever comes first :)

300V comes in several weights, but the 300V has little or no friction modifiers, so the 5V40 is the biggest spread they make. They have a lesser "street" grade synthetic, which is available in more weights and is cheaper.

It's remarkably hard to find promotional materials on Motul. They don't publish reams of propaganda. It's not hard to find little Motul stickers on rally and racing cars, and racing motorcycles, however. It's also impossible to find anyone with anything bad to say about it. And, unlike Amsoil, the testimonials aren't from people trying to sell you a franchise.

Mobil1 is fine, I've used it in many cars. No question that it's the best value synthetic around.

Basically, with the significant investment in my Subaru's engine--which is pushed well beyond what the factory had in mind--I don't mind spending extra for Motul oil and K&N oil filters. It's just how I've done the math and the conclusions I've reached.

In any case, I'm going to have a sample analyzed when I next change the oil in a couple of thousand miles. We'll see how it holds up.
johnfelstead 06-27-2002 01:00 PM

your engine is turbo charged so you need a higher grade oil.

If you plan on doing hard driving you should use Motul Competition 300V 15/50. But change it more often.

On the road as a daily use oil use Mobil1 motorsport 15/50. Dont use the standard Mobil1, it's like cats pee in a turbo engine when they get hot.

Another good oil is Castrol RS 10/60, a little thick in winter but great in summer. A perfect track oil.

We use Motul 15/50 on our GroupA rally car, it's awesome stuff!
Hojai 06-27-2002 03:48 PM

i was using Redline 10W30 in winter and 15W40 in summer time.
is that good for ocassional track day?
i was going to get the K&N oil filter but the guy told me K&N doesn't make oil filter for 2000 impreza. is this true?
Jon Bogert 06-27-2002 05:23 PM

It's the K&N HP-1004. It fits many cars including Hondas, Acuras and the 6-cyl Izuzu Amigo (so it must be good!)
johnfelstead 06-27-2002 06:11 PM

The consensus in the UK is that the best filter to use in the standard Subaru filter due to its filtration spec and it's presure valving. There are examples of aftermarket filters failing and causing engine failures on the EJ20 turbo engine.
GoodFinder 06-28-2002 08:31 AM

Anybody have any experience with the Canton/Mecca oil filters? They have an 8 micron replacement element which they describe as a "thick, porous, synthetic filter media that flows much better than a surface element when new as well as after it has trapped a large amount of contaminants."

GoodFinder :)

I use the OEM filter for that exact reason. Also, I've been using Motul 300V 5w40 in the Texas heat. It doesn't get very cold here so there's no reason to change weights from summer to winter.
Lawndart 06-28-2002 01:57 PM

I personally use Valvoline 5/30, by no means racing oil but a good every day oil for a stock motor. I no longer use Castrol because I found out that Pennzoil is the same company and I would not put Pennzoil in my lawnmower.

One more thing you should consider is the oil filter. Use Purolator Pure 1 filters. Do not use the Fram filters that all the Oil change shops use. I got this information from the Subaru tech then confirmed the information through my brother (worked for Saturn for 5 years, now works at GM).
trhoppe 06-28-2002 04:55 PM

The Subaru oil filters are the same thing as the Purolator regular one. This IMHO means that the Purolator Pure One is a step better then the Subaru one. Thats the one I use.

i'm not familiar w/ 15W50 Mobil 1 motorsports, any places to source it? Prices? Same questions on the Motul.

Thanks
BIGSKYWRX 07-01-2002 12:20 AM

Well this is the second time Walmart has suprsied me. The first was when they actually had rhino ramps and for $24.99 to boot. Now they've done it again w/ the 5 gal jug of 15W50 Mobil motorsport oil- $17.95- not too shabby.
MGXsport 07-01-2002 03:22 AM

Does anyone know where Agip is sold in the US? I haven't looked very hard but it wasn't anywhere I could think of
the Dabbler 07-03-2002 07:38 PM

Ah, oil brands and grades... it's like debating religion or politics.

Anyways, I use Redline 20W50 in my turbocharged RS. It sees (road race, not drag) track duty one weekend a month, usually. Not quite real racing, but flat out (i.e., never below 4krpm) for 20 minutes at a time throughout the day, which is close. In summer, at places like Willow Springs, the oil temp can get up to 270 (saving up for that oil cooler).

Why Redline and not Mobil1 or Motul or whatever? I must say that my oil "religion" is based primarily on the following post. I would credit the original writer, but I don't have his name. And also, to be perfectly honest, with the Internet being what it is, this self-proclaimed "chemist with extensive experience in synthetic lubricants" could very well be a 16-year old kid who writes well...

On your question on of Mobil 1 vs. Redline, without a doubt Redline provides superior temperature range performance, sludge removal, load bearing capacity, and antiwear properties because it uses a polyol ester basestock versus a poly-alpha oliphin (PAO) basestock. Mobil 1 is based on a long chain molecule, Redline is closer to a microscopic "ball". The ability of the "ball" to roll inside bearing surfaces vs the ability of the non-branched chains to slip by each other is what gives the Redline basestock its superior performance, especially since the additive packages are basically the same. On the practical side, Redline costs almost 2x more, at least for me (perhaps others on the list can get cost estimates for Redline from around the country; I haven't found a good price in NJ).

Anyways, I'm sure Mobil1 would be fine, and at $17.95 for 5 gallons (!! -- sure you don't mean liters?) of 15W50, that's hard to pass up. He's not kidding about Redline costing 2x more. I think I pay something like $7-8/qt.

Oh yeah, also, for what it's worth, I use Subaru oil filters.
Clegg 07-03-2002 11:03 PM

I use the same as many of the other posts here ( yes on a lowly N/A plant :p )

Mobil1 10w30 in the summer
M1 5w30 in the winter
and Mobil1 M1-104 filters
DiscoStu 07-04-2002 01:56 AM

Amsoil 15-50 and a purolator pure one filter.
BIGSKYWRX 07-05-2002 12:59 PM

Whoops! 5 liters, not gallons for $17.95- that would really be a hell of a deal.

LOL, your wrong again. It is 5 quarts or i think 4.75 or 4.5 liters:D
HoRo1 07-05-2002 06:18 PM

2002WRX - I use Mobil 1 10/30, change it after 2 days at track so I suppose that since Jan 1, this year, 4 changes in ~6000 miles - expensive, but peace of mind.

Take three- for $17.95 at Walmart you can get a jug of Mobil 1 15W50 that contains somewhere between 5 pints and 5 gallons:lol:

LOL.

The walmart close to my house was out. I went to another one, and they had the 10w-30 I was looking for. I didnt see any 15w-50 though. Not like I need or want it, just making an observation.:)

Just to be clear on this. Redline and Motul both use polyol ester synthetic basestocks, while Mobil1 uses a polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic basestock. Polyol ester based oils are supposed to be superior to PAO based oils. This is the comparison the article is really making, and not Redline vs Motul.

Note that the SWRT uses Motul. I use Mobil1 (it's so readily available), but if I had extra money to drop, I'd go with Motul myself. I believe Subaru will soon be reselling Motul as well.
