WRC Tarmac.. is it really "rally"
I dont know about everyone else.. but i just dont feel the tarmac rally's the same way I feel the gravel rallys..... anyone else feel the same?
pitwipe 03-16-2006 06:21 PM

I think testing the cars and drivers on all surfaces is key to the excitement and competition of WRC
WagonMonster 03-16-2006 06:22 PM

Tarmac Rally is just as much rally as any other surface.
endeavor 03-16-2006 06:22 PM

IMO, Rally = get from point A to point B as fast as possible -- with just about anything between A and B (gravel, snow, tarmac, sand).

That said, yeah I usually think of gravel when I think of rally. But tarmac rallies are my favorite. Nothing like smoking tires sliding through e-brake hairpin turns.

Agreed completely. It's still timed, point to point stages, in WRC cars.
fireball_jones 03-16-2006 06:25 PM

I like any stage that has mixed surfaces. Tarmac+snow is awesome.
endeavor 03-16-2006 06:26 PM

BTW, has anyone else seen the vid of Petter doing tarmac testing in a plain (no decals) WRB+gold 06 WRC car? Freakin awesome. Probably the best testing video I've seen.
nKoan 03-16-2006 06:33 PM

Um, yes. Tarmac rallies are still rallies. If you look up 'rally' in the dictionary, you'll see it has nothing to do with gravel or dirt. It has to do with getting a group of people together for a single cause.

Back in the day, rally events weren't races, they were a chance for all 10 car owners in Europe to grab their vehicles and rally across Europe to meet up. Then, as cars became more numerous and with boys being boys, everyone decided to start making competitions out of these rallies. The most widely available roads at the time for these special competitions were the dirt ones, as it was really hard to close off sections of asphalt roads. So, they'd still have their rally, but intersperesed with little sprints (or special stages) to see who was the fastest. As popularity grew, the competiton aspect of it started to draw spectators and then everyone started focusing on it.

So, in short, of course tarmac rallies are rallies. Rallying competitions nowadays are about being fastest in all terrains, gravel, mud, snow, ice, tarmac, etc.

Don't forget School Zones.

Rallying has been one of the ultimate forms of motorsport for decades because it tests drivers, co-drivers, and teams abilities in all types of cars, conditions and surfaces. This is the thrill, and this is the challenge. Sucessfully adapting to these changes is the reward, and the team that does it the quickest is on the podium.

(rarely do they drive around in perfect circles again and again and again... ;)

Ha, there already is one! Well its a "slow down children at play" sign, but it's close enough.

But anyways, rally is rally, no matter what surface. I agree that I'd rather watch a gravel rally then a tarmac one, but it's all the same. And it also gives drivers who don't specialize in gravel a chance to shine.

If anything, tarmac rally's are the toughest of them all--the cars aren't built to be pure road racing vehicles, but are designed to have a degree of sliding and rotation to maintain speed. The tarmac surface goes against that, and as a result, it's even more challenging (and exciting) to watch the top drivers have to wring a car's neck to get it to do what they want to do.

Road racing drivers tend to not want or need to overdrive a car for fear of crashing. WRC drivers on tarmac can't do anything less than overdrive for fear of being dead last.

WRC driver are, and have always been the best racing drivers.

Yes, driving on top of kids is always one of the hardest to find a good clean line.
Tricky [RCAF] 03-16-2006 08:07 PM

I agree with the majority and WRC wouldn't quite be WRC without Tarmac.
grippgoat 03-16-2006 10:02 PM

I like Tarmac the best, because it's the car I wish I had, and the way I wish I could drive around town every day.

/me goes and watches the Best Motoring 2003 Subaru WRC Touge Attack video...

hmm, i see all your points.. and i know tarmac is rally.. i just meant that when i think of rally i think of dirt and gravel. I guess its all just personal pref and all, but i like the gravel rallys the best. :) cause to steal from another post.. "thats the way I wish I could drive every day"

Everyone has their favorites, and that's fine.

But to discount Tarmac Rally is lesser rally or non-rally is just silly.

I've been to 2 WRC Gravel events, which were great, but my next one will definitely be a Tarmac event.
bjorn240 03-16-2006 10:27 PM

Unless it's snow, it's not rally.
WagonMonster 03-16-2006 10:55 PM

Snow, or an event where you almost kill a photographer!
STiMULi 03-16-2006 11:27 PM

It is not a Rally unless you are Swedish and you are in Sweden! :)

Yeah but there is nothing like seeing the debris like snow and gravel flying from the tires as the cars dance around corners in conditions that are so slippery that even our president couldn't BS his way out of. BTW the rallies are designed to be different from eachother, with no 2 places being similar and no two stages being similar. The difference of surfaces means that the drivers must be able to handle each surface and be able to set up the car differently for each surface. The loose surfaces do seem to be more of what is commonly considered a "rally" though. This weekend I will be doing a TSD rally, where we drive the speed limit on open public roads. There are many different meanings to the word Rally in the automotive industry.

Are dirt ovals really "NASCAR?"
Rally is not about the road you are on, it's about how you use it...

What's the rally version of that racing quote??

"In order to finish first, one must first be Finnish!"

I agree. I love the tarmac stages!
kadafi 03-17-2006 02:42 PM

Best tarmac Rally is Rally Deutchland. Especially with those concrete tank guards by the side of the road.
Mopho 03-18-2006 04:24 PM

Go watch an Irish Tarmac Rally: Narrow roads+ wetness + stone walls + lots of bumps + 150 or more entries + 30 second intervals +crazy Irish people = more exciting than gravel!!!
Rapid_Roo 03-18-2006 04:53 PM

I love tarmac rallies. WRC would be incomplete without them. :D
