what do you think about hood pins?

i just bought a new hood today a CF made by JSP ....the guy before me didnt have hood pins in it and i like the clean look but dont want anythign to happen like a hood flying up on me ....any one have any thoughts on this ..thanks

I too have a CF hood and I don't have any hood pins on mine. Even at high speeds when the hood looks like it's about to fly off it holds firm. The manufacters strongly suggest you do so and I did have a friend who's hood flew off on the freeway and smashed his window along with the hood so it's not for certain that it will stay without pins.
It's a chance to take.

The latch has these female threads held onto resin on the carbon fiber. It does not not take much to crack off. So you should run both pins and latch it will keep the corners down. Drilling isn't hard put super glue on the hole after you drill to strengthen and prevent the fibers from unraveling. Check out the aero locking hood pins they are smooth looking.

Look up NRG Flat Hood Pins, that's what I'd run if I had a CF hood. Good luck. website is www.NRGInnovations.com

What! My carbon hood would flap like crazy past 70mph. Just think that the only thing holding it down are two small screws that hold the latch on the hood, and they thread into sockets mounted in fiberglass. The fiberglass gets weak from the hood movement, cracks and the hood flies up and slams into your windshield, IT HAPPENS! Hood pins are a NECESSCITY WITH ANY CARBON FIBER HOOD. Now the hood sits nice and tight at ANY speed.

Id rather have hood pins than have a hood fly up, smash the windshield and roof..among other things..

After watching my hood flap around at highway speeds, I spent most of my time worrying if the latch would hold instead of watching the road.
As for a picture.. here is my car with pins

I just recently bought some sparco ones off eBay... it's what I think everyone on this forum recommends after searching also one of the few ones that won't rust.
I had an incident where I was driving and accelerating fast and I saw my hood pop up, it unlatched itself but it was still latched with the push latch thing... had to pull over and close it again...
I also find myself watching the hood and making sure it isn't shaking too much, can't enjoy the ride... It shakes often at speed but I have been going quite fast and the hood stayed shut, the time it unlatched itself I was going about 25mph slower than the fastest I've been with the CF hood on. I guess it all depends on speed, wind direction and how strong the latch is at that moment...
I too at first didn't like the look of them but if I don't have to worry as much anymore it'll be worth it, plus they actually look good on some cars IMO (brcewane)

I'd rather just get a CF scoop if I had to have CF as from what I've read, our hoods are pretty light as it is.

but who said you needed a carbon fiber hood? the aluminum one is probably lighter anyway. In that sense, hood pins = functional for part, part = rice so the transitive property would give us hood pins = functional for rice, which can be simplified to hood pins = rice :)

In most cases yes, HOWEVER, I think in our particular situation it's the opposite. As from what I've read about Subaru Hoods, it's actually pretty light as it is and a CF hood isn't much lighter where you would see actual perfomance gains from it. On other cars like my gf's Accord where the hood is heavy, a CF would technically offer some performance aspect.

ive been a fan of the vented hood since im gonna stick with the ebay topmount. also my aluminum hood is dented and needs paint. its actually cheaper to get a cf hood then replace the oem unless you find a good used one. that said ill probably go with a cf hood middle of the month. or atleast after i know its done snowing

would like to explain why? failing to prove your point gets an automatic F.
refer to nightmare's post as to my proof.
for my car, a CF hood would provide a benefit, becuase I don't have an aluminum hood (which i will be getting instead of CF) so it will save weight. For honda's it has a benefit, for supras it has a benefit. For a 2002+ WRX/STI, it has no benefit.
ps. don't take things so literally when theres a :) at the end.

Man your hoods must suck or something. Because I go like 70-80 most of the time on the freeway and my hood dont even shake or nothing. You must have either a crappy hood, or didn't put it on right.

Go with the Flush Mount Hood Pins.
I saw an ad about them in one of the Tuner magazines can't remember which it was an article about getting race quality stuff for your car. They were a teardrop shape that pop up and lock with a key.

I have been thinking about hood pins myself. Not so much for the safety factor, but the security factor. I have a chunk of change under the hood & regularly park outside. I might look into some good low-key lockers. :)
| Wolfninja | 02-03-2007 08:00 AM |
I saw those Aerocath pins for about 90$ it's not really that expensive only when you compare that to other normal pin assemblys. But I would defiantly go with them or the NRG thase looked pretty sexy in the fact that they use a tumblar key to secure them.
