which side-marker replacement looks best?
I have to replace those orange side markers in my 2k2 WRX as soon as possible - they just bother me. But I am not sure wether to go the clear route, the CF STI "sticker" route, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

For my Black RS I'm going to get the CF STi ones.
| mexicanpizza | 06-26-2002 04:38 PM |
Seen most of them in person. EVERY clear one is a piece of cheapo junk (bad fitment, cheesy looking plastic, ric3y reflector patterns, etc)...with the exception of the OEM subaru white/clear ones (from Ryan at Irvine Subaru). They are perfect replacements, with the only bad thing being that they are like $110.
STi CF side markers are nice...but they ARE a sticker...a little ghetto for me but if that's what you're into then they look nice.
I've read threads here about people using clear hobby spray tint to darken or smoke the sidemarkers. I thought about trying it...
Anyway good luck!

personally i think the CF sti side markers and the subaru clear corners look the best. The cheap clear corners tend to look cheap and lame cause they dont fit that well.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the opinions. I am leaning toward trying to spray tint the stockers at this point. I was wondering how the STI stickers looked, but the mixed opinions are making it questionable - I too am kinda unsure about putting a $120 set of stickers on my car. I keep seeing people with the cheap clears complaining about how they are crappy, so maybe I'll try spray tinting the stock one's and if that doesn't work too well I'll get the OEM STI clear's.
Any more opinions/pics are very welcome!

STi carbon markers
I just got the STi carbon markers since I couldn't stand those factory orange markers. I think they go well on my silver car. :D I'm not sure how they would look on a black WRX, but I'd bet they will be a lot better looking than the stock orange. The markers I got are indeed stickers, but that word doesn't do them justice. They are good quality, and I doubt they will ever fade, and they definitely won't come off unexpectedly since the backside is extremely sticky.
If you're still debating, I agree that you should paint the stock markers first, see how they come out, and then take it from there.
~Cheers

Nobody has ever to mention if whether or not those CF Sticker covers are opaque (allowing no light to shine through) or not?
I don't particularly like the idea of blocking the parking lights like that. They do serve a safety function.

I'm all for the Clear side markers..
I got mine here: http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/skid.htm#elegant
They are $38, and come w/ orange bulbs, which cuts on the rice factor (I hate blue bulbs).
They don't fit as well as stock, meaning there is a TINY amount of play if you grab the marker and shake it.. Otherwise, its visually perfect and you cannot tell the difference.. I thik putting vent stickers or even the carbon ones (unless your car is black) makes it look cheap.. besides, at $38 they are among the cheapest options.

The STi sidemarkers do NOT let any light pass through...The light comes out, the sidemarkers go on. That side light doesn't even blink with the turn signals, does it? Pretty useless if you ask me. Just don't get the clear sidemarkers, in MY opinion, they look absolutely horrible on the car...
As for the Zerosports sidemarkers I showed above, I'm working on installing a turn signal sidemarker and installing it so that the lgiht comes out threw the mesh insert on the back of the unit.

Wow guys, thanks for the pics/opinions/insight. I don't know if you're helping or making this harder for me!!! No, it's better, I like seeing what different people have done, I'm sure you guys have better imaginations than I do.
I agree with several sentiments that the lights are pretty much useless - they are just redundent and the orange is hideous. So I'm not against removal or covering of this light. However, the zerosports duct is a little rich for my blood (for this kinda thing). Does that glue in, or how does if affix, just for my own information?
I am also leaning away from the clears - after seeing black with the STI "stickers" and the positive response from people that have them, I am starting to really like them. I think I'll be able to see them in person on a car tonight, so that will really help. I'll probably still try spray tinting the stock covers first, but the cabon STI on Solo One's ride look straight - makes me want'em!
Solo one - awesome ride - I'm PMing you a couple of ?'s.
Schleppy - really like the black on silver. If I had a silver car with black trim this is certainly a great way to go (especially price wise!).

I went with the clear sides with horizontal reflective striations (thought the diamond reflectors surfaces ones looked a little cheap), the fitment turned out to be great and the quality is not OEM but it's damn close. I also have a silver sedan though so they blend in really really nicely in my opinion, I don't think clears would look that great on a black wrx though. I would go for the carbon fiber ones, keep it clean!

another alternative
I have the real JDM STI smoked sidemarkers,i think the diamond ones look cheesy. IMHO.These look excellent on a silver car.Other colors not sure.Perfect fit,you cant see threw to the orange bulb there legal, and they work.Price i think was $110.
They came as a set with the JDM smoked fender lamps, havent put the fender lamps on yet.
These as a set are cheaper then the STI carbon or the Zero Sports .Neither of which work.
Rudy;)

FYI - The Zerosports Side Markers use 2-sided adhesive like the STi ones do, but also have a bolt & nut that go through the fender. They are constructed of carbon fiber and have a black mess insert in the duct opening.
If you want to go with either those or the STi ones, shoot me an email and I'll get you a good price on them.

I got the white ones. I personally think the clear ones look funky. Ya they were $110 :( and you need to dremel a hole in the back of them to put the bulb through, but I think they look the sweetest, especially after I put PIAA Ion Yellow bulbs inside. They shine yellow not that orange of the O.E. ones. I'll try to take a night picture and post it too.

I bought clear markers w/horizontal ridges on ebay. I replaced the stock #168 white bulbs with #194 amber bulbs. I like the clean look on silver and it really compliments my cleared headlamp mod as well.

Clear relfector type, also off of ebay. I had the ones with the lines straight across, but the fit was attrocious and the chrome reflector material was missing in spots where the glue they used to put them together had eaten it away.

Isn't it a DOT requirement that those signals work? In other words if you drive on the street, you're supposed to have a working side turn signal on the front? For pedestrians and such that might not be able to see your front turn signal? I also thought that the reflector is required to be amber as well, but I think that ticket is just a "make right" kind of thing, similar to those ricers that have the clear tail lights with red bulbs (taillights are required to reflect red).
Granted, not too many cops are going to care about that sort of thing, but I'd rather draw as little attention to myself as possible. Not sure if any of this matters to you, but it is something to consider. Anyway, I think the STi stickers are the best looking.
Neil.

Those lights are worthless, as far as I can tell. I don't beleive they blink or do ANYTHING besides stay on. However, they are also the reflector, which is required. I don't mind getting rid of the refector - I don't beleive any cop is going to be able to tell that it's supposed to be there.
Thanks for the input!

If they were actually blinkers...
NTP-
If they were actually blinkers, then yes, I think it would be a DOT requirement. They are only clearence lamps (like the side marker lights you see on trucks, some have a million and some have none). I personally think they should be blinkers (blinking opposite of the fron turn signal, meaning constanly on an going off when blinking) for the reason you cited (pedestrians and cars in the lane next to you). I think the reason why they are not is that the non US versions have a blinker mounted in the fender behind the front wheels and it would be redundant.
I do believe they have to give of amber or white light (any light other than rear lamps I believe, which must be red), but if you have yellow bulbs like most of us do then that is taken care of. The white ones I have are actual reflectors. I had to cut the hole in it to mount the bulb, so the do operate as a reflector also (albeit a white one).

The side markers are not turn signals...just lit markers when parking or running lights are on. I'm not sure about whether or not the reflector needs to be amber but I'm pretty sure the bulb does when the lights are on unless you have the stock amber reflector, in which case the light bulb is white behind the amber reflector.

ISR Performance has replica STi side markers for $19.95. I have a set sitting right here but haven't installed them yet so I can't comment on how they fit but they are just a thick 3M sticker (1/8 inch thick) basically.
The pic on the site makes them look like they are too light but they don't look like that at all. They look exactly like the real STi's minus the pink "STi" emblem.
http://www.isrperformance.com/wrxdressup.html
I'm thinking body-colored side markers would be a much cleaner look though... anyone know where to buy those and how much? WRB.

The turn signal bulb can be seen from the side at the legal angle.
All cars in order to pass DOT need to have an amber light side marker at the front corners of the car besides the blinker to determine the front of the car at night. (most manufactures implement them into one) The blinker itself can be any color as long as it emits an amber light.
To give an exaple at night you see a car from the side with the amber light on the left & red in the back. Your mind tells you that the car is going to the left. Most people don't think of it because it is instinct.
So when you blow the light & the person doesn't see your amber light. You better hope they aim for the back end of your car! To say they are worthless means your life is worthless.

"So when you blow the light & the person doesn't see your amber light. You better hope they aim for the back end of your car! To say they are worthless means your life is worthless."
If that's the kind of reasoning you need to make you feel better fine, but I have 2 major problems with your statement.
1. If you blow a red, and think that little redundent orange light is going to save you, you're placing some kind of unrealistic power in that light.
2. Saying a worthless redundent light IS worthless is no reflection upon those of us who wish to rid ourselves of it's presence - that comment is ignorent at the very least.
Besides, as a side note, our cars do have daytime running lights, I would be shocked if people would say they saw the little orange lights before the daytime running lights in an emergancy situation or otherwise - if so, the daytime running lights wouldn't even be neccessary.

1. I don't put all my faith in that light. It is there to help. I was telling people why it was put there in the first place.
2. I don't see as worthless & "redundent." Nor does all car manufactures in the world (take a look sometime at any car they all have amber light that lights up when headlights are on)
As to being "ignorent" at least I can spell ignorant. & redundant, necessary last but not least emergency.
And to answer your daytime running light statement. The orange redundant lights are for nighttime driving not the daytime. You thought is was for the daytime:confused:
