Who has the auto-dimming compass mirror? part 1

gtguy 12-09-2002 12:07 PM

Who has the auto-dimming compass mirror?
Who has one of the auto-dimming compass mirrors? Are they any good, and can I install it myself?

I'm sick of getting lost, and have finally admitted to myself that I am directionally impaired.

I have one. You can install it yourself.

You can follow these instructions for the radar install, and the instructions with the mirror. Very easy.

Mine was purchased from www.subaruwrxparts.com for ~$125. Look under accessories.

Works great! Find the compass to be reliable and the auto dimming to almost 100% perfect. Now if Subaru extended the auto dim to the sideview mirrors (like my wife's 02 A6) it would be even better.
subarurabbit 12-09-2002 12:35 PM

I've got one with a temp gauge and compass.

yeah, pretty easy to install.

I have one....just installed it yesterday. Very simple and the instructions from Subaru are self explanatory (as always). Works as you would expect.

Good Luck,

The Auto-Dimming mirror works really good.

Thanks guys, but I'm lazy....$150 installed at my dealer, plus tax. Sign me up.

I didn't know they made one with a thermometer built in is that US spec?

Subaru doesn't sell a mirror with the Temp. Gauge in it for the Impreza, but the company Subaru buys the mirror from does. I think subarurabbit purchased the mirror from Donnelly and paid over $200 for it. It plugs into the factory harness, but you have to run your own temp sensor and wire I think.

Maybe Subarurabbit can expand on what I have said. :)

so far the best factory option with the car.

I don't know... that extended armrest is mighty comfortable to put your elbow on for extended periods of time..... ;)

Kev,,,go for it,,easy install too.I liked em so much i wired one into my RS.
Rudy

ps,,especially good on cloudy days when your running the backroads hard and concentrating more on yr driving then where your going;)
EricB 12-09-2002 05:14 PM

Yea, get it. It's like a 15 minute install, if you're slow. I can't stand driving my wife's car without one now (a future project perhaps....)

Compass part is nice...plus the default zone is 7, which is where you live Kevin...meaning you won't have to adjust that. :D

The auto-dimming is priceless. I can't stand driving other cars at night that don't have this feature, especially with all the sport utility barges on the road these days (high headlights). Even worse are the pleasure barges with HIDs. :(
mtb_dude 12-10-2002 04:46 PM

I thought every WRX came with that standard? I guess everybody I know just happened to get it. Yeah it works amazing. I drove a rental car in So Cal a few weeks back and manually flipping the mirror seemed sooo annoying. :)

The compass and auto-dimming mirror rules!!

The Autodimming Mirror is Great
Dear Scooby-Friends--

I have the autodimming rear view mirror with compass. It works great. Wish it had an outside temp sensor. You can buy one aftermarket that has this feature.

agreed, by far my favorite option on my car, probably the only option that i like too. i always get blinded by my side mirrors because i think that they're auto-dimmed too, thinking of putting a light tint on them but haven't had the guts to try it out and don't know how long it will last being on the exterior.
ForceFed4 12-11-2002 01:29 PM

I have the auto-dimming/compass mirror, and I love the features like everyone else. I do have a question though; I have a rattle/vibration that has always bothered me since it started at about 1K miles. Last week, @20K miles (19K miles of going crazy), I finally isolated the noise to the mirror unit itself, after about of year trying to figure out where in the dash it could be coming from.

Has anyone else had a rattle coming from the mirror? It goes away for a little while if I turn the auto-dimmer off and on again (little button on the left of mirror), so it seems like there must be something loose inside the mirror casing. Has anyone taken one of these things apart? Can I even do so reasonably easily?

If anyone has any advice, thanks in advance.

I had that rattle as well. For me, it was the little plastic clip behind the mirror. I touched it and it instantly went away. I think I mushed it a little, and it's been quiet ever since. :D
DannyGT 12-11-2002 02:07 PM

YUP !! Exsactly, I had the same thing, a very slight bzzzzzz sound....it was a plastic peice, all I did was touch mine and all gone...question tho...how do I turn the dimmer on or off...If the green light is lit on the left side, does that mean its on ? when I first got the car I felt It was a night and day difference when it would activate, but lately (maybe im used to it) i dont get that blue tint i once had, at least not as much i dont think......

Yes. Use the left button to turn on and off. The instructions are in the manual.
newbie sewbie 12-11-2002 05:41 PM

never had to use the compass before, but the auto dim is good to have, wish they had that on the side mirror and outside temp on the rearview too
mtb_dude 12-12-2002 10:47 AM

Actually, funny story. I got lost once I was like, "Damn! If I just had a compass right now . ." then a light bulb went off in my head! That was about three months after I bought my car. I use it all the time now when I'm unfamiliar with the area. :D
18FOREVR 12-12-2002 01:44 PM

Got it, love it, use it. Wish my side mirrors did it.:)

How well does the auto dimming feature work with tinted windows?

Good question. My windows are tinted 30%. The dimming function is a little darker than I like. I thought it would be able to compensate and adjust accordingly for the amount of light that does penetrate the tint. ....oh well. With my current tint it works just fine for me. I'm not sure how it would do on others though.

I'm very interested in that question as well.

Anybody else seeing this.....Whenever I turn the car on, the mirror instantly gets a little darker. It is never as clear as it is when I manually turn it off. I can be on a totally dark street, and the mirror darkens a bit. Is there any sort of adjustability built into the mirror, such as the threshold, or sensitivity?

I haven't noticed that on mine. Do you possibly have something blocking the sensor on the back of the mirror (i.e. tint, something dangling, etc.)?

Nothing at all blocking the mirror. I can be on a pitch black street, with the mirror switched to "off", looking back at some street lights a 1/2 mile back. I switch the mirror to "on", and it dims enough that I can no longer see the road surface.

I'll check mine out the next couple of days and see. I may not have noticed (my back window happens to be tinted w/30%). I'll post my experience.
