Even though it looks like my man DC got a big bonus for this one... it should definitely be a red flag.
Should be a pretty uneventful race, now :(

should have red flagged it.
There was tonnes of carbon shards on the track.
Truli is now out, wouldnt be surprised if that was a tyre failure due to debris.
As far as a show goes, just from that point of view it was a red flag incident.

What they will try to do is use the two way telemetry to try reprogramme it on the fly i would think.

Yep, I can't figure out why they chose not to red flag that mess. They lost almost half the field in that deal. What the heck was Ralf thinking? (Although the onboard shot was quite impressive!)
With a little luck, Toyota will score a point or two!

FORZA! Scuderia Ferrari!!:D
Nice start for the season for Michael; I feel bad for Rubens though, it could've been a totally different race...
Nice work for Toyota as well, a point in their first F1 race, not too many teams can say that.

Long before his car died DC had 2 or 3 off track excursions that took him from the lead to 4th or so. Kimi was kinda all over the place too, so maybe the McLarens were having a poor handling day...

I liked NOT having red flag. Good call.
If you are screwed you are screwed.
Red should not be flagged unless Safety Car situation is not safe enough. Safety Car call was just fine.
I like how mid to low budget cars can have a chance to score points in a race like this, just like how the local dude finished 5th.
Big Booooooo to Arrows. What the hell are they doing??? They didn't start the race and didn't both of them got black flagged?

And I'll go one stop further and say I was dissappointed that the safety car was called out for Trulli's crash... Laps behind safety cars change the dynamics of strategy in a big way, and that's not the F1 way... OZ should've had a crane there, so that no safety car was needed.

Actually the start was a travesty of the rules and the FIA stewards should have red flagged it.
they fact that they didn't is interesting, as it leads to the thought of who exactly was 'whispering' in their ears in race control...
Ah F1 gotta love the politics

feh, with all of the Schumi = Fangio hype, the result wasn't too suprising. Worked out pretty well...

This year's rule, per Dr. Sid (visit www.insidef1.com...good site), is that unless there's a "dangerous situation," the race will not be red-flagged. Everything was clear by the time the pack came through again, so that was why things were allowed to continue. No politics involved, just simple interpretation of FIA rules and the judgment of the Chief Steward.
Note how Sato's car in qualifying was in a dangerous spot, so they red-flagged the session.

Should have red flagged it from a safety perspective.
The amount of carbon on the track (which is as sharp as a razor blade) was enormous. There was a high chance that someone had carbon in their tyres that could lead to a blowout.
The cars were running behind the safety car for ages due to the time it took to clear.
That is exactly the reason why Senna died in Imola. Tyre pressures dropped enough because of a prolonged safety car period that his aerodynamics failed due to ride height loss and he went straight on. End of a genious.
This was the conclusion last year after plenty of research. The FIA should have learned from that!

not only that, but what about the shards of crap that went into the cockpits... Didn't someone take a 40 second pitstop so one of the mechanics could grab a piece of car out from under their driver!? OUCH!

Yup that was Nick Heidfeld, and he came back from last place to grab 3rd!

Wow John, I didn't know that. I think that the last thing that most of us heard was the steering column thing. Nor did I realize how much debris there was at the site, which is indeed a safety issue.
Personally, I thought there should have been a red flag, if only so the first race of the season didn't start with half the bloody grid missing in action.

Yes, the reason Frank Williams is no longer being persued by the Italian legal system is because the research found that the car lost its downforce because the aerodynamics were so badly screwed up with the drop in tyre pressures and therefor ride height. There was a TV programme here in the UK called "Going critical" that went through all the research findings.
Incidently, at the restart Montoya lost all front end grip and almost went off because of this, thats why Shuey and Truli made a big gap for the first couple of laps. Watch the footage, you can just see how huge the understeer is.

Re: Debris On Track
Michael Schumacher, when asked about red-flagging this start vs. last year's Hockenheim start in the post-race press conference
I think there was far less debris on the circuit than there was in Hockenheim. In Hockenheim I remember the whole straight was covered in pieces, if I'm right, and that was the reason. Here there was room to avoid the pieces. There is a certain rule and they follow the rule.
I think MS showed that he was the best driver out there in that race. I SUPPOSE that outcome could have been engineered, but how anyone could watch him take on two cars in front of him (he wore out Trulli who spun it) and then he passed JPM after dogging him for, what, 20 laps or thereabouts?
He was simply relentless.
And then set over a 30 sec in front of JPM after the pass? A car that has more hp, and a driver who is no schlub?

Re: Montoya's Loss of Tire Pressure
John - You might be correct about the tire pressure drop taking downforce off of JPM's nose, but both MS and JPM saw Juan get into a little oil, and they thought that is why he went off in front of Michael at the 1st restart...
Michael Schumacher at the post-race press conference
Basically in the first safety car, nothing really happened, I didn't make up anything, actually when I was behind Juan at the time I lost out quite a bit because the traction initially wasn't there for me and then he gave me a favour of braking a bit on the oil, in turn three, which allowed me to pass and then I was battling with Trulli...

JPM at the post-race press conference
At the time when Michael got by me I didn't really see that oil coming... and out of turn one, when you turn left, I could see some oil there as well and I thought: I got it. It was a bit too late...
